Okay, survey time... do you use mostly solid or patterned fabric for your quilting?
This question popped into my head last week when I was waiting in line for the cutting table at Joanne's. They are moving stores, so had a 75% off closeout. The lady behind me had tons of solids, I had tons of patterns. Needless to say, she "inspired" me to go get some colors (at $1.25 a yard, who can say no??) I can't wait to read your responses! |
I usually only buy solid black, I prefer tone on tones or other blenders. :D:D:D
I usually stay away from solids. I much prefer tone on tones.
I also like tone on tones as many of these "read" as a solid and I think they add more interest and eye movement to your quilt. However, if you have really busy blocks, a solid coloured sashing is exactly what you need. If you have the luxury of both at $1.25 a yard, why not?
Tone on tone. Except at times a solid black.
I use a lot of solids with patterns.
I can't stand a busy look so that works best for me. I'm trying to change but it's not working well! |
Mostly patterns with some solid for sash, background, etc. I like tone on tone too but I have a Kona solids color card so I can find the exact color I need in that brand.
I use both, maybe a little more patterned. When I started quilting I used 2 solid and 1 patterned because solid was cheaper.
I rarely use a true solid fabric. I just don't like them. I prefer tone on tones or something like that.
I usually let the project determine the backing.
I like tone on tone, love blenders, and use some patterned. very little solid except sashings
I have only made two quilts with solids.

No solids for me! I've bought two yards when I first started quilting (reads didn't know what's what) and they are still here. I do love tonals and batiks!!

Tone on tone or patterned, hardly ever buy solids.
I use it all....solids batiks tone on tones prints...whatever looks good for what I am making
patterned
I love solids! Hand quilting shows best on solid fabrics, of course. For the quilt backs I normally use patterned ones, especially flower prints.
I most always use a patterned and have lately done pieced backing becasue they are so much more interesting. Just think - when you pull the quilt up over you - what do you see - the BACK! I will use a plain muslin for a wall hanging so I don't have to waste something good against the wall.
I use tone on tones or blenders but once in a while, I use a solid black. I like mixing tones and textures with prints.
I like patterns mostly.
I instinctively buy patterns. Often have to go shopping for the right "solid" to go with whatever I am working with!
I have no solids in my stash, though it's not something I ever thought about. When I want a "solid" I buy a tone on tone print : )
Me too. I rarely use solids. I love the tone-on tone which blend into a solid but have that little bit of pop sometimes when you need it.

Only purchased one or two solids. Seldom use them.
I buy prints and wish I had some solids
If it's on sale it's for me. I love the primary color solids.
I rarely use a solid as it is so flat in the quilt, seems to suck energy out. A fabric that reads as solid reflects the light in a different way which I prefer. Over the years, I've managed to cull the solids from my stash--yea for me! used up some stash--
depends on the quilt pattern,,, some quilts just like solids!
I have plenty of pattern fabrics, tonals, and solids..... my stash is in good shape |
i like patterns (currently making blocks of stripes w/blocks of pattern next to that w/solids for sashing)
I have both and use both, but prefer blenders to straight solids. I'm making a quilt for my husband and he's requested ONLY solid fabrics. No blenders, no patterns, no tone on tones...just solids. I'm procrastinating with it...I really need to get going on it, though. I'd like to have a good start on his top by late February - he's out of the country until then, and I'd like for him to see that I've done *something* with it since he's been gone. LOL

i think prints look best, but every once in awhile i try a solid and it works...
I rarely have solid. If it is "solid", it is always tone on tone.
I almost never use solids except for black. Well, after I went through my Amish phase!
Have a few colored solids, lots of Kona White, but really like the prints cause they r just so pretty........
For me it is very few true solids, more tone on tone. I usually pick a patterned fabric for the focal fabric. Sometimes if I am doing black and white, I will use solid black to make the b/w pattern material pop.
Early on I bought several different solids, thinking that they would come in handy. They haven't. Now I only buy solids in black, white, and natural, and they're for special projects.
I always go for tone on tone....whether it is fusions or batiks...I just like the flow with the batik or the fact that the fusions are not just one tone of color...if that makes sense...solid colors look flat to me
