Solution for rulers that slip?

I have several rulers that need the nonslip sticky circles on the back to prevent them from moving on fabric.
I am unhappy with the little circles. They are outrageously expensive for what they are, and they don't stay on the ruler.
I am looking for creative solutions to the slipping problem.

I have thought that perhaps I can make silcone blobs on my teflon sheet. These could be peeled up and a repositionable adhesive used on the back of the blobs.
Has anyone tried this? Does anyone know where I can get a sheet of clear silicone that could be cut as needed? (Something like the child's toy that is out now called gel and peel??)

Thank you for any ideas you might share.:o

Joann's has a product called Invisi Grip by Omnigrid. Comes in a roll and you just cut it to fit your ruler. Works pretty well.

The clear medical bandage tape works great on rulers. I got it at walmart. I can't remember who mentioned it here, but, I tried it and it works wonderfully. In the past I had used the invisi Grip. But, after awhile it tries to come loose. So far this works great and was inexpensive.

Twilliebee 10-30-2017 12:20 PM

I used Invisigrip for years but when someone here mentioned the medical tape I tried it on a new ruler. It works great! I've switched to medical tape on all my rulers.

I use a dab of Elmer's contact cement especially when I'm squaring up hsts. It just rubs off when done and much of the time I prefer my ruler to be slippery. My last bottle lasted me 10 years so it is pretty inexpensive. So far I've not damaged any markings on the rulers.

I have a friend who uses her hot glue gun on the backs of the quilts.
she says they stick to the fabric now. good luck.

Anniedeb 10-30-2017 12:39 PM

I use sandpaper dots. I don't know what they're called because a friend gave me a sheet of them years ago! I just peel and stick. They last a fairly long time.

EasyPeezy 10-30-2017 12:52 PM

I've used Invisigrip...it works for a while then it's slip and slide again.
Now I use Nexcare clear tape. Got it at Walmart. Quite a bit cheaper
and one roll can cover quite a few rulers.

i use that, too. it's great

I've used the nextcare tape and after several years removed it from my rulers. It's frosted and was interfering with my ability to see the lines.

Sewnoma 10-30-2017 01:47 PM

I bought 150 of those silicone sticky dot/rings off of Amazon for $7. Much easier than trying to make my own, and they work exactly like the higher-priced name brand ones. They're even on 3M adhesive back, just like the expensive ones!

Here's a link to the listing: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Replace them with Quilters Select rulers when you can - worth every penny! They do not slip!

cathyvv 10-30-2017 02:40 PM

I spray my rulers lightly with spray basting. Works very well, but immediately after spraying, rub it with a paper towel to get excess off of it. Otherwise, it sticks to the fabric, which, when cutting fabric, is not terrible.

I picked up my first Quilters Select ruler a couple of weeks ago and it won't be my last. I believe it's designed by Alex Anderson. Terrific ruler!

Exactly what I was going to say! They are amazing. I have several sizes and love them all. Yesterday I picked a non-QS ruler to cut something and had to fight to keep it from slipping. It went back into the storage pile and I went back to a Quilters Select ruler.

Steady Betty strips. I cut them into 1/4" squares. They're perfect - small enough for me to see, and they don't slip at all.

I was thinking of changing my sandpaper dots to this, but I was going to sprinkle the glue with some very fine sand too. Glad to know my thought wasn't dumb.

I use the grip strips from Guidelines4Quilting. They work really well

quiltingshorttimer 10-30-2017 08:09 PM

cut some small squares or strips of the foam shelf liner--put between ruler and fabric. Works great and can be moved to allow you to see your measurement lines.

I use these as well. Couldn't cut without them.

Rhonda 10-30-2017 08:32 PM

I use a med grit sand paper. I just cut them into strips and glue on one or two strips off to the side with an Elmer's glue stick. It lasts a long time.

A quick fix you can also use is to place emery boards under the ruler. they will create a friction and stay put until you move the ruler. I use this all the time. You could glue them on if you are using large rulers.

jokir44 10-30-2017 10:04 PM

Anyone notice when you watch a Jordan's Fabrics tutorial they use a hand weight to hold one end of the ruler in place? I suppose it works but would seem a nuisance to me.

NJ Quilter 10-31-2017 01:59 AM

I use the sticky rubber dots...one on each corner. Bought a small sheet of them for less than $5. They work great; no falling/peeling off. I only have them on my long rulers as I seem to be able to hold the shorter/smaller ones down well enough.

grann of 6 10-31-2017 04:08 AM

I use clear strips that are meant for the bathtub. Amazon sells them. About $14 and you will have enough for all your rulers and a friend's to boot. You can see through the strips so it doesn't interfere with measuring lines.

JENNR8R 10-31-2017 04:43 AM

Clear skateboard tape is also an option:

I'm with you about the dots- I don't like them. I also have used that medical tape and it works much better.
As for Quilters Select Rulers- they are wonderful. I'm slowly adding them to my collection. Best out there.

I also tried the Invisi Grip and did not hold to the ruler well. Tried the medical tape and that works better.
Now I use strips cut from the shelf liner and it is an easy thing to use. I have strips cut in different widths for different rulers, not attached to any ruler just placed on fabric under ruler to cut.

The shelf liner tip was given by a fellow board member but am at a loss right now as to who passed on the tip.

My friends and I have been using this method for a few years. All you need is a small 2" x 1" strip to put under your ruler to keep it stable when cutting. We keep the piece in our quilting tools and it is always there when we need it.

Best rulers I have ever used. No slipping at all. The Quilter's Select mat is the best I have used too.

janjanq 10-31-2017 07:50 AM

I have these rubbery strips that to go on the sides of my rulers. I bought them from Guidelines for Quilting and I think they're called GripStrips. Not the cheapest solution but they work pretty well.

Bluelady 10-31-2017 08:09 AM

Ruler Magic works quite well also.. thin layer on the back and no more slippage!

I've ordered these from Sharlene Jorgenson's "Quilting From The Heartland" website. If you like to cut, then slide the template, you'll have to slightly lift the template because the sandpaper does catch on the fabric. A sheet can go a long way when you cut out the dots with a hole-punch for paper.

I've also used the Invisigrip with success, but prefer to cut it a bit smaller than the area I want to apply it to. I probably do not do as much cutting or quilting as most of you, so have not had any peel off or noticed reduction in resistance.

Shorebird 10-31-2017 10:33 AM

My solution is to replace rulers, little by little, with Quilters Select rulers. They DO NOT SLIP at all...........and you do not have to add things like Invisigrip to the backs.............

MaryHJ 10-31-2017 11:40 AM

Again..thank you for all the suggestions. I sent an earlier thank you, but don't see it on the list. Will try again. I am fumbling a little learning to use the board.

I am thrilled with all the ideas. Thanks to all of you.

I use that shelf liner stuff. I found a roll of it at the dollar store but Walmart and a lot of other places sell it also. Cut a strip and put it under your ruler - no need to glue it on - just move it when you move your ruler. Works like a charm. I also put a square of it under my foot pedal & I sit on a square of it as I have trouble sliding down in my chair. I've tried other things but this stuff works the best for me and you can't beat the price!!

I have some of these on some rulers, some frosty medical tape and some with sandpaper dots. They all work for me. I also have some of the rulers with a rough back.

grammasharon 10-31-2017 03:26 PM

This is what I use having been introduced to it at a quilt retreat. Works great and I even cut a small square to use with my 2 1/2 inch square ruler. Never slips.

Yep. These are the best I've used, much better than Invisigrip. 3M makes them, and they come in different grits, so make sure to get the coarse grit. You can't even slide the ruler with these on it, not even a smidgen. You have to pick it up and place it down again.

momsobon 10-31-2017 05:11 PM

Rust-oleum makes a product called Leak and Seal it is a flexible rubber coating....I bought a ruler at a Oaks Quilt Show and my girlfriend and I figured there has to be something on the market to do this and we went to HD and asked around and they guided us to this and you spray it on and it is clear and the rulers don't move once you put it on the fabric. It is in a white can in the paint isle...I have been using this for a few weeks and it's great. I cut a lot of scraps I do a lot of charity quilts all scrappy....so I do a lot of cutting.

mawluv 11-01-2017 02:27 AM

A dab of clear nail polish, then a sprinkle of table salt, let dry. I've used this for years....
