I agree also, if your heart isn't into doing this quilt don't do it. This woman's life partner meant alot to her, probably to the point where she'll want to wrap herself up in this quilt. If you have to ask about doing it, then don't to it.

I am in the process of making a sampler quilt out of the clothes belonging to my sister who died last year. i am only using 100% cotton not t shirt material. it is a little difficult because it is not new fabric but the blocks I have made so far are lovely and I can not wair to get it all done. i know she would be so happy that I have put her clothes to such good use.
Also my brother had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He has lost a lot of weight and has donated 15 cotton shirts to me. I posted on this board for some suggestions for patterns to make him a lap quilt and eventually decided on a "sailboat" type block. Again it has been quite difficult what with trying to match stripes etc. put I have almost got the blocks finished they are not perfect but I dont think that is the point. i am hoping my brother will like the fact that I have used his belongs to make something for him that will bring him comfort. You don't sound to me as though you are too keen to do this project but all I can say is I think it would mean a lot to the person so if you can find the time to do a very simple quilt I think it would be very much appreciated and you would find that very rewarding. |
I have made 3 quilts out of clothes from friends who have passed. The first was a crazy quilt using all the pretty stitches my Janome offers. I made sure everything was pre- washed, but I used everything that could be washed and iron. I wanted all the textures. The second quilt was 6 inch squares with assorted fabrics. This women was my best friend and a hockey mom. There were several sweat shirts and t- shirts in this quilt so this is where the fusible interfacing came in to work as a stabilizer. The third was a string quilt that I made into pinwheels. Man it was cute. Hope this helps.

After my friend's father died, she asked me to make a quilt using her father's shirts, for her 2 daughters. (his granddaughters) He was always conserving his money in many ways. He wore those shirts - for YEARS. I had originally planned to do a log cabin or some other block. But later changed my mind and made the blocks big, 8 inches, so they would see the material. I also appliqued a piece of his tie, in the shape of a tie, to the front.
The power those 2 quilts had was overwhelming for the family. (SILs and BILs, his widow, and even me) We ALL remember him in these shirts, so when we see the quilts, its a reminder. She gave me mens dress shirts and some flannel shirts. I worried about mixing the fabrics, but they turned out fine. (I wouldn't mix in a 'regular' quilt) His wife was so overcome she asked me if I had any scraps left over to make something (anything!) for her. I think I have enough left over to make her a throw. If you're charging for the quilt, remember it is quite time consuming to cut up the shirts. (at least on dress shirts) I didn't charge anything for the 2 I made (we're friends) but had considered doing this type of thing as a job - until I found out how much time was involved. And also, to them, it will be priceless. :D |

This could a good project for a "string quilt". You can used many different fabrics and don't have to worry about cutting or piecing. A string quilt would incorporate many different fabrics and the muslin backing would give you additional weight without having to use interfacing. there are many tutorials on the web. Good Luck!

Now just waiting for material.Good luck with your project. I know it will be well loved.

I, like someone else on the board, got the idea as I read your post that you really do not want to make this quilt. I also agree, if you know someone else who quilts, you might suggesat tha tperson to your aquaintance. Take care.
