How are ya, have p.m.d you about your avatar which is so beautiful.. Is it a Nancy Smith "Storm"? If so, I'll be so happy to buy the patt. from you.
Don't know why you had problems with the binding after doing such a georgeous quilt.
Thanks for the response, nunnyJo

Resewed first one ... wonky. Rip.

Second one. Sewed it wonky, took it apart, and in the process flipped it around so that I had the seam on the right side of the fabric. Wouldn't have been so bad if I had noticed it BEFORE I trimmed it and sewed on the last strip.

Third seam ... I've managed to sew the tip of the other end of the strip under the seam!!!

So, what do you think I could have possibly done wrong with the last seam? What other rookie mistake could I have made? Anyone want to guess?

I'll give you one hint ... it's a batik so there is no right side of the fabric.

   Sorry you're having such a hard time with it.

I just sew some satin binding on a minke and flannel snuggle blankie. That was NOT FUN!!!!! Only for my grandchildren, it is not worth the frustration!!!

:x Boy have I been there! Only thing that saved my sanity was LOTS of silk pins and hand stitching the binding to the minky blanket. Ugh - worse than sewing on silk and more lint too.

That's o.k. When I was just learning to sew and made a jacket for my little girl, I was so proud of it until I put it on her. One sleeve went down; the other went straight up! I've laughed for 58 years over that one! Don't give up!

I've laughed for 58 years over that one! Don't give up! I kept sewing, and eventually made her wedding dress which a professional looked at and said, "You know you're talking $700 or $800, don't you?" And that was way back in about 1972!

Just this morning I sewed a bunch of binding strips together - leftovers from other quilts and pieces that I cut from scraps. Here's what I do - I pile the pieces up with the right sides of each end UP and facing the same direction. Then I cut the angle. I ALWAYS check the ends I'm going to sew together to make sure they are in line for a straight seam, then I flip the left hand piece OVER the right hand piece, leaving 1/4 inch at the top. I sew into the seam at the V at the top and sew out of the seam at the V in the bottom. Even if you are using batiks or fabrics with no right side, it will work every time. Good luck.

I feel your pain! Some days it "seams" I just can't do anything right. It is a "Dahhhh" moment.

Slow2Sew 09-01-2011 10:21 AM

I'm only admitting this because it's been about 30 years since it happened:
I wanted to make myself a pair of SIMPLE pants w/a zipper after having my first baby. A friend insisted that I use her Vogue pattern because it was so easy for her. After suffering through the complicated guide sheet, I thought the pants were ready to be hemmed. I held them up and, low and behold, the crotch seams were pointed outward instead of inward. I started crying and my mom fixed them for me. I'm still not sure how that happened.

hint hint....rest and have a glass of wine and come back to it relaxed :D

I find that when I get like that it's time for a nap! Who cares ifwe're not 3 y.o. anymore ... we still need a recharge time for our brain!

RobertaMarie 09-01-2011 11:45 AM

Well, DogHouseMom, I got my binding done just fine, even got it sewn on with nice mitered corners. Re-watched three different videos on how to join the binding for that hidden look and had to do it four times. I finally laid it down, pressed the dumb 45 degree angle in each piece, basted it together and making sure (twice) it was in the right place, finally sewed it correctly and trimmed off the excess. Whew! My eyesight and age are getting to me!! Today is the handwork of whipping that sucker down!! I guess our "guides" want to keep us humble so we still fit our pants.
Thanks for sharing and God bless you and future projects.

Most of my days are like that. I'm beginning to think at the age of 56, maybe I'm too smart to be stupid but too stupid to be smart.

teacherbailey 09-01-2011 01:21 PM

This is why I don't use binding after a couple horrible experiences. My grandmother always used a self-binding by bringing the backing to the front, folding in the raw edge of the backing and sewing it down....and that's good enough for me!

Sunnye 09-01-2011 01:33 PM

Yes, I've done these things too. What you did "wrong" is that you tried to sew on a non-sewing day. We never know when they will happen; they just do!

puppy 09-01-2011 01:37 PM

when my day is going like that....i quit sewing or whatever..and get up ..play with my dogs, hosework,garden.etc..

sylviasmom 09-01-2011 02:00 PM

Been there, done that also. Devised this method. Cut as many 2 1/2 strips as I need, lay them side by side, right side down, except for the first strip. This one is right side up. On the remaining strips, measuring down 2 1/2" I draw a line, thus making a 2 1/2" square with a diagonal sewing line from upper left to lower right. Now I pin the second strip to the first strip, right side together and so on until all the strips are pinned together and sew. This may sound time consuming, but you should have seen my strips before I started doing this. They were all over the place, but never straight.

marthahelen 09-01-2011 02:51 PM

We all have days like that! Made 2 candle mats, cut out the backing and batting and then realized I never put the borders on. Now the backing and batting are too small! That should earn a slap or two.

littlenell7777 09-01-2011 02:55 PM

Ohhhhh K, you had a really bad day....... lol

jeanharville 09-01-2011 03:53 PM

I've had sewing days like that and it's almost scary. Made me wonder if dementia strikes in one day. You have my empathy, the good news is that tomorrow may be a perfect sewing day. ((((hugs)))))

MargeD 09-01-2011 04:08 PM

Well sweetie, if I come over and slap you, you'd have to slap me back, because I've done that on more than one occasion. Don't feel bad about the right side/wrong side of batiks, I have in my possession - honest - at least 1 or 2 batiks that do have a right and a wrong side. When I have days like that, I put the project away and either walk away from the sewing machine, OR do a totally different project. Despite being extremely careful, I thought, I managed to get a huge fold in the backing when I was sandwiching this year's family reunion quilt and was on a deadline. To say I was upset about this stupid mistake would be mild. We all have days like that, then there are other days when the sewing goddess/fairy makes everything go smoothly. Here's to smoother sewing days!!

vickimc 09-01-2011 04:12 PM

just one of those days. I have them quite often anymore.

Bren 09-01-2011 04:20 PM

Hey girl, no slaps from here (been there, done that, bought the t-shirt)! Just carry on...you CAN DO!

kerrytaylor 09-01-2011 08:41 PM

Hysterical! I'm new to this site and I've sure enjoyed the message boards. This one struck me as particularly funny. It sounds exactly like something I'd do. I'm a newbie, barely into my first quilt. I think I've managed to mess up pretty much anything mess-up-able tho eventually victory reigns. No clever tricks up my sleeve so I'm no help but I sure enjoyed the laugh. Thanks for helping me feel so not alone!

kerrytaylor 09-01-2011 08:59 PM

Hi all, I'm new to the site and this post is hilarious! (I thinks its a misery loves company thing). I'm just now piecing my first quilt. . . .self-taught. I don't quite know how I've survived myself and some of the THINGS I've done on this project. The best laid plans ....at least I know I'm not alone. Thanks for the laugh, I'm so sorry but I needed it!

roxie623 09-01-2011 11:14 PM

Ah the infamous "Binding is a Pain" club. Welcome and guess what? You are not the first and will not be the last quilter to have binding get the best of them. How do you think I know about this club. LOL

rahaube 09-02-2011 04:52 AM

It took me a while to get the hang of this but finally have it in my mind. My most difficult time is sewing that last seam after the strip is sewed to the quilt. I have to pin it and open it to make sure it is the right way every time or I do it wrong.

butterflies5518 09-03-2011 04:36 PM

Baby quilt - birthing method and the batting ended up on the outside! Been sewing for 40 years, I SHOULD know better!

emlee51 09-03-2011 05:36 PM

Sometimes I have to stare at what I'm doing for a very long time before I can do the task at hand...then pray I don't screw it up!! You can get in line for the slaps!! Lol!

mamacool 09-06-2011 06:02 PM

i acutally gave up on making binding for my quilts. now i just ust the backing...center the quilt on the backing with about two inches extra on all sides, then after i'm done with the quilting i just trim and fold over thebacking and bind it that way. I'm like you, it would take me two days to get enough bias made to bind a quilt. this way is soooo easy
