Honestly, sewing binding strips together isn't rocket science is it? So why did I just spend 3 hours sewing 5 ... FIVE simple strips together? That's only 4 seams!!
First one ... sewed in the opposite direct so when opened all I got was a V shape. Resewed first one ... wonky. Rip. Second one. Sewed it wonky, took it apart, and in the process flipped it around so that I had the seam on the right side of the fabric. Wouldn't have been so bad if I had noticed it BEFORE I trimmed it and sewed on the last strip. Third seam ... I've managed to sew the tip of the other end of the strip under the seam!!! So, what do you think I could have possibly done wrong with the last seam? What other rookie mistake could I have made? Anyone want to guess? I'll give you one hint ... it's a batik so there is no right side of the fabric. |
LOL, I hadn't sewed anything for about 15 years, and went to make my son a pair of flannel pj pants and sewed the wrong seams together at least 3 times :) OOPS!!! We're all human ;)

Only for my grandchildren, it is not worth the frustration!!! |
I know I did the same thing. So I keep a short sample for reference and threw it in my sewing box. I pull it out whenever I need to make binding. There are lots of good demos on Youtube also.
|
Been there-done that. Here is a "slap" for you, I have needed one on more than occasion myself.lol
|
Sounds like binding isn't your favorite thing to do either. Been there done the same thing. Keep on trucking.
|
You sewed the whole thing with no bobbin thread?
Please DO NOT say you cut it by accident. I almost don't want to think about what you could have done....you didn't spill your drink on it did you? One time when I was making my husband shirts...stupid me cut out the peices and THEN removed the pattern peices and folded the pieces up and set them aside. I needed fabric to cut the collar out and THOUGHT I had grabbed the left over fabric....but didn't. Instead, I had grabbed the peice of fabric that was the back peice that I had cut out and used it to cut the collar out. AFTER THE FACT....I went to sew the back to one of the front peices and seen what I did....I was so blasted heart sick and was not able to get any more of that fabric...since then I DO NOT for no reason whatsover remove pattern peices until ALL pieces are cut out and accounted for. |
Boy, Batiks are tricky. Sorry you're having trouble.
|
Must be time for ... coffee? chocolate? wine? a walk?
Right there with you, been there, have the t-shirt. Better luck tomorrow! |
I put a dab of instant applique glue on the ends, then sew them all at one time. I haven't had to redo any strip seams since I started doing the glue first.
|
LOL. somedays everything i sew i have to rip out. don't know why we have those days.
|
Sounds like you need a cupa & some chocolate....the cure for everything...lol

We all have those days! A couple of hints for you:
Mark the backside (or what you want as a backside) of the batik with chalk before you cut the strips. Then they will all be the same. I starch so it isn't so stretchy when I get to the last join. It's much easier to handle that way. I glue baste to do my strips. I line up my strips on the ironing board. Fold down the same end of each to get my angle. Glue baste it to the other end of the next strip and pin to hold it while I take it to the machine. Then I chain sew them all, cut off the extra, press and am done! Easy as can be and the seams all face the same direction. |
I once had twisted a strip, and several of the opps you did. If I have pleanty of the fabric I just cut off the wrong seam and go on.
|
I put one on the ironing board horizontal and one vertical and pin it in place. I then fold the vertical one in line with the horizontal one and press it. That gives me a guide to stitch on, otherwise I can't get it straight.

To the others that mentioned glue ... I use glue a lot to seam. So chalk up another mistake - I didn't get the glue out. |
I had the same probs when making the binding for my "The Witch is In " wall hanging lol.. I was fed up finally and just quit and came back to it later and had no problems after that
|
ROFLOL. Oh my goodness, I just spent four hours last night taking stitches out of my runner binding and border because I didn't like the look.
I asked myself, "who cares? If they lok that close, they can walk out the front door and not let it hit 'em where it counts". Gosh my behind is sore today. So glad others do this. |
Have you considered decaf?
|
Been there, done that.
|
My goodness, I would have been having a glass of wine after the second rip out!!
|
Just think how much you enjoy the days when everything goes right. You wouldn't appreciate those days if you didn't have a bad day here and there.
|
lol.... oh my. Don't cha just hate days like that???? Thank goodness tomorrow is another day... it can only get better. ;-)

Brain fart! Been there done that!!
|
I feel your pain. I promised my DIL I would make 4 burp cloths for her friend who's having twins. I didn't think I would ever finish those. I hadn't used my embroidery machine in a while and had trouble with it. AFter a good 8 hours I finally put them in the mail.
|
I'm sorry, but it did give me a good laugh. Not because of your mistakes, but because we all have days like this.
When this happens to me, I just call it quitts. No matter how badly you want to quilt, sometimes it's just better to take a break. Doesn't it always seems to happen, when you have the perfect time to quilt? And on other times when you have the perfect going, there is always an interruption. Consider yourself hugged! |
Congratulations! You saved all your mistakes for the easiest-to-correct part of the quilt. Smart!
Darren |
Consider yourself slapped  Now, eat some chocolate & then go to bed. Tomorrow will be better.
|
I'd love to come over and slap you.Just pay my airfare, and I'll be there tomorrow.LOL
|
I had that kind of morning on Monday of this week. That project is now hiding in the closet.
|
Too funny ...
|
I will not slap, but I will come over with some of my grand disasters and show them off for you! Then, you'll feel a lot better about your little mistakes! :)
|
Don't feel bad. It took me almost two hours folding a yard and a half of fabric in half so I could get ready to rotary cut it. First time I tried the selvage wasn't lined up in the middle so the fold wasn't straight when I ironed it. Had to open up and iron out the fold. Pinned the selvages together, but the fabric was twisted up. Finally got it right the third time. Went to go cut off a clean edge and my ruler slipped. Had to recut. Just not my day for fabric prep.

LOL, sorry to laugh at you, but I spent the morning sewing and ripping, trying to make a baptismal blanket from some reclaimed eyelet. It's going to be two rounds of wide eyelet sewn with mitered corners. I screwed up the first piece and had to rip it out. Then pinned for a second try and discovered BEFORE STITCHING that I'd just done the same stupid thing. I wanted the first round to be sewn to the second round while leaving the scalloped edging visible. Why in the H it was so difficult for me to figure out is beyond me. And what makes me really mad, is that I'd tried another pattern first and cut my strips to fit the first pattern, but it looked just like curtains. So I had to re-group and redesign. I've spend more than two days cutting, sewing, re-cutting, re-ripping...................... |

How do you make continuous bias? Don't you have to seam sometime or another. |
Hey, we've all done something or other like that. Someone perfect would be real hard to live around, but my DH used to say he loved me anyway!!!
Once I was making a wedding present for a future DIL and her choice was a huge crazy quilt pillow with laces and velvets and brocades and suede. It was almost finished, I was hand sewing the last of the embroidery on a lovely piece of velvet when I had to get up for a moment, but the pillow top wouldn't let go of my pants leg!!! I'd sewed that thing firmly onto my pants. Had to remove pants to rip it out...DH sat there giggling at me...he had far more fun with that than I did!!! But new DIL loved it...loved it so much she kept it in the divorce. |
watch Sharon Shomber's videos..the binding one is fantastic..
