Flying_V_Goddess 07-30-2011 10:44 PM

A few days ago I convinced myself I was going to make a quilt for a friend of mine. Over a year ago she had to move three hours away from here when her husband lost his job and his mom offered him a job at her motel/bar. She confessed she was lonely because she hasn't really made any friends she really connects with and doesn't have family up there. And to top it all off she lives just a few miles from her overbearing MIL.

So I watched Nightmare Before Christmas (her favorite movie), watched all the special features, and downloaded some Halloween fabrics for EQ5. I was really inspired by that hill near the pumpkin patch at the beginning of the movie that swirls at the top. What I ended up making in EQ5 was...well, a Monkey Wrench, but with a few extra pieces to get the ends to curl just a little bit more. Hallween Town was limited to black, orange, and white for color and was given quite a lot of texture to make it look more illustration like. I'm hoping to find some black and orange fabrics with textures like swirls, tree knot like circles, and crosshatching to match this style. So its not a literal interpretation of the movie in terms of story line, but I think it has the spirit of Halloween Town.

But I feel like its missing something. (Kind of ironic since the main character in the movie feels like there's something missing in his life. lol.) What do you think?

alikat110 07-30-2011 10:47 PM

I like it

coloradosky 07-30-2011 10:57 PM

Looks great.

litacats 07-30-2011 11:20 PM

I like it too thanks for sharing

MadQuilter 07-31-2011 01:03 AM

I think it has great balance. Not missing anything from where I sit.

Skulls in the borders maybe?

I love the Halloween theme. I'm sure your friend will love it.

Just an FYI:
This is the Monkey Wrench/Churn Dash block:

What you made up in EQ is a Snail's Trail block:

;-) ;-) ;-)

I love Snail Trails quilts. One of these days I'm going to make the Shakepeare in the Park quilt by Judy Martin.

One of these days.

You could look at what you have here as a background and applique a cat or something to go with your theme, personal from you. Maybe do the label like that. Just a thought. It looks beautiful just like it is.

ptquilts 07-31-2011 02:34 AM

how about, in the large black center blocks, instead of plain black, a black with a figure on it (witch, cat, skeleton) scattered here and there on the quilt.

I like it very much as is, love that pattern.

Its perfect, what does the back look like?

JeannieT 07-31-2011 03:15 AM

I like it too, don't see what could be missing.

heather1949 07-31-2011 03:35 AM

That is so awesome, has the real WOW factor attached to it.

SueDor 07-31-2011 04:12 AM

I don't see anything missing either, but if there is something that she likes (like cats, pumpkins or whatever) you could that in.

QuiltnNan 07-31-2011 04:40 AM

i love your design and color choices. how about appliqueing a small surprise peeking from behind one of the swirls?

AbbyQuilts 07-31-2011 04:48 AM

I think it looks great! What a wonderful friend you are

snow 07-31-2011 04:50 AM

Love It!!!

patchsamkim 07-31-2011 04:52 AM

I think it looks great...if you wanted to for a fun zip of color, you could add a piping between the blocks and border...maybe something like a lime green.

JenelTX 07-31-2011 04:53 AM

What a thoughtful gift! I do think this captures the feel of the animation of Nightmare Before Christmas. The extra curlicues really make it! I don't think this is missing anything. It's going to make your friend feel so special and valued when it arrives.

I like it very much as is, love that pattern.

What about a moon with Jacks outline in it. About a third of the size of the quilt in the left bottom corner. It would be easy to do as a raw edge applique.

Theres the swirl!

This is delightful and NOTHING is missing. If you wanted to add a small personal touch though, an appliqued Halloween piece somewhere on the quilt would make it truely a friendship quilt between the two of you. I love it .........

leatheflea 07-31-2011 05:00 AM

Jacks face would be easy to applique on the quilt also, do a google search and look at all the neat images that come up. I copy the image and then take it into my eq6 and make appliques by layering them on the quilt the size I want and then print out the picture of that part of the quilt. I just printed out a monkey yesterday that was 18" tall for a quilt.

mtspools 07-31-2011 05:01 AM

Its great just way it is.

gaevren 07-31-2011 05:01 AM

Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite movies. Honestly, I think if you added anything else to that quilt it would detract from what's already there, which is amazing!

CoriAmD 07-31-2011 05:27 AM

I think it is perfect just like you have it... and I also think that is one lucky friend to be getting this from you

Glassquilt 07-31-2011 06:12 AM

I agree that an applique might add the little something extra you're looking for.

lyndaloo 07-31-2011 06:17 AM

Beautiful! Perfect, just as it is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

greencat 07-31-2011 06:24 AM

Looks great! If you want, maybe add a little something special on the back.

kwhite 07-31-2011 06:30 AM

This is exactly what I was going to say.

PaperPrincess 07-31-2011 06:47 AM

I like it a lot and it would be great just as it is, but for some reason, I'm seeing sparkles. Like hot-fix crystals or maybe the black fabric should be sparkly. Or use a bit of glow in the dark thread when you quilt.

sandy12010 07-31-2011 06:53 AM

it is amazing...I like it as is beautiful work..

isnthatodd 07-31-2011 07:00 AM

A little touch of green here and there as leaves or vine?

romanojg 07-31-2011 07:03 AM

I think it is great. If you wanted to do anything else I'd say a wider border; a place for your eyes to rest. With or without a larger border you did a great job w/the snails trail block.

dglvr 07-31-2011 07:06 AM

I love it. I don't see anything missing myself. But yeah a wider border maybe.

jean1941 07-31-2011 07:13 AM

Looks great beautiful quilt

Ann912 07-31-2011 07:16 AM

Great quilt.

amma 07-31-2011 08:23 AM

What you quilt on it, could fill in what is missing... sayings or cartoon characters from the movie :D:D:D

fluffynan 07-31-2011 09:12 AM

What a lovely thought and what a good interpretation. Love the colours. Not much good at suggesting anything to add, looks good to me, but as someone else suggested what about adding to it with the quilting you choose.

Deb watkins 07-31-2011 09:42 AM

I don't think it is missing anything..the design and colors are very nice. I agree about maybe an applique'd black cat or a witch someplace randon...not in every block, but an overlay maybe in a few places?

luce321 07-31-2011 11:23 AM

It looks great to me.

blueangel 07-31-2011 11:45 AM
