Sometimes the Man does know best

So Dh came up to the office (which doubles as our guest room and has a queen sized bed) to find me practically in tears as I looked at the completely finished top for DD and SIL's quilt. It was almost touching the floor on three sides. I don't know how I miscalculated, but in my opinion, it was about 10 inches too big all around. I was trying to figure out the easiest way to dismantle a portion of it and re-size.

He started asking me questions:

'Is this the size of their bed?' Yes.

'Is their bed this low or is it higher?' I think it is a bit higher.

'Will the top be the same size after it is quilted?' Well, probably a bit smaller because of the quilting.

'What about after it is washed? It's cotton, right? and cotton shrinks, right?' Well, yes it will probably shrink a bit when it is washed because I want to use Hobbs 80/20. (small sidebar while I explained what 80/20 meant )

'What if you just trimmed a bit off the last border all around? Would that be enough?' Ummm.....(a moment or two of silence as I contemplated that easy fix and kicked myself for not thinking of it :o) Okay, I could get it quilted the way it is, remeasure and trim if necessary at that point. Eureka!! Yes, that might just work!

'Well then, can I have my chair back please?'

What a man!!

He is definitely a keeper.

Love the logical way he approached the problem!

If the kids don't have a king size bed then being too big is great. They will have one eventually. If they do have a king and the quilt almost touches the floor, good luck finding a LA that can fit it on the frame. LOL

Oh no problem finding an La'er. I have been using my Sister's for a couple of years and she is wonderfully accommodating. She did my 106x118 for my king and a beautiful job she did too!! I think I was so excited to have finished the top and then had the "Oh 'bowel movement' moment". Just needed to be talked down.

Great guy!!! I have one like that too. Helps me all the time, especially with the math, (which I,m terrible at).
Yep, keep him.

Great advice. I have had recipients tell me they are glad when the quilt is larger because it covers their thick mattresses, etc. Too short is a different thing though.

great idea to have it quilted first then trim after... I'm sure it will finish up nicely. I agree with slbram17, a lot of quilts are too short of the first mattress.

Sometimes it just takes someone who is not emotionally involved in the problem to ask the right questions.

kathy 02-06-2016 04:36 AM

OMG, if he's like mine he'll be advises you from now on whether you want it or not!so glad he helped you figure out a good fix

I will often tell my students that when you face a problem that you think you can't get around - walk away. When you return refreshed and clear headed, you often can see a solution. Or have someone with fresh eyes (your wonderful hubby!) look at it. Usually the solution is there and often it is not as complicated as we make ourselves believe. We are so hard on ourselves. Hope he got a super hug for his help!

I agree. He is definitely one to keep!!

I agree with Sync, your DH is definitely a keeper. Occasionally, when I'm having trouble with math when making a quilt, I ask DH, as he's very good at math. I can usually do it; but sometimes my brain gets "stuck" and I can't think of a reasonable solution.

Bigger is better, if it hangs down the sides, two can sleep under it and it won't just be a spread. Great advice from DH.

Jingle 02-06-2016 06:14 PM

So glad it wasn't too small, although Borders could be added. always good to have someone else to help.

caspharm 02-07-2016 05:04 PM

Definitely a helper. Sometimes you need an another point of view. :)

tjradj 02-12-2016 07:34 PM

What a sweetheart.

joyce888 02-14-2016 04:35 AM

Sometimes it just takes someone else to see the trees when all you see is the forest. I would rather have a quilt too big than too small.

quilterpurpledog 02-14-2016 05:39 AM

Isn't it wonderful that gender perspectives are different! But remember, the saw cuts both ways. The solution is great. And, I agree with those who who spoke of difficulties with the depth of mattresses. I this is a big problem with quilt patterns- they need to be made longer to cover the depth better.

sprice 02-14-2016 06:51 AM

My husband has a good eye for color. I was stuck on a purple and bright pastel quilt and he suggested using red for the sashing. Perfect! Think I'll keep him! Now maybe I can get him to help me post a picture!

tessagin 02-14-2016 07:01 AM

I don't know that a quilt can ever be too big for a bed. My dh's advise, just tuck it in.
