I too love to get some quilts done quickly, like when I'm preparing for a fair and want to make and sell as many things as I can, however, it's also fun to attend an all day event to make quilts for different charities. Yes, there is probably more talking than sewing at times, but since I now only quilt alone, it would be nice to have contact with others who share my love of quilting. That's what I love about QB, I get to see and hear what other quilters are doing, plus I have found some very special "quilt friends" on the QB that I "talk"to frequently via e -mail,and I never would have met them without QB. Thanks and happy quilting whether a solitary craft or in a group - it all works.

I may be a speed quilter because once i have all the planning done( which takes a while) I can hardly stop until it all comes together.

I enjoy even cutting ! I only make bedspreads and wall hangings and am considering handpiecing a king size. :o

I think it is to each their own. I don't enjoy dragging things out. Projects become a burden and not a pleasurable experience for me if I do. I am doing a BOM for the first time this year and loved the quilt when I signed up. I now hate it. I will finish it but I am not sure I will keep it as I planned.

I sew quickly. I also walk quickly, drive fast and finish books within a day or two of starting them.

None of this is a contest. It is just what satisfies me. If a different pace is for you, I am happy for you.

I've been doing some speed quilting lately and have not enjoyed it much. "Threads of Love" sent me some Christmas theme panels, which are very*easy to turn into the 18"x18" quilts they want. However, I also got the message that they want them done by Thanksgiving. I've been turning out 3 or 4 (Or more) exactly alike. That takes away*the fun of planning how to best use the fabric.. I feel like a factory robot.

What a wonderful lesson it would be for them to hear our discussion on enjoying the process.

what a lovely balance! I'd love to speed up a little sometimes, but, no...I wasn't designed that way, lol.
I'll just accept the hand I was dealt and keep on putting one furry little foot in front of the other.

let's get together, lol! my fibromyalgia makes the cutting part and the basting part painful, or otherwise I would enjoy those too! however, I don't hate them at all...just the pain, oy! I get a feeling of accomplishment from every step I finish until it's all finished, and then I get to share!

Just joined this board and like this particular thread. I love all aspects of quilting, but do love to see a finished product quickly. Lately I've just wanted to sit down and SEW in what little time I have to make quilts. I've been making quick quilts and runners from layer cakes and charm packs--easy and fun, with little planning and prep needed.

ctipton 10-16-2012 10:43 PM

speed quilt when needed But usually putzing for me:D

cat2quilt 10-17-2012 04:42 AM

I have only worked alone and like you, I feel no need to finish anything on any time limit, except my own if the quilt is a gift. Other than that I just enjoy every aspect of the quilt making but in my own time.

crashnquilt 10-17-2012 05:35 AM

For me it depends on the situation. I am lucky enough to belong to a sewing group. We are just a bunch of friends that get together once a month for a sit n sew. We help each other with projects. We also make quilts for victims of disaster in our local area. That is when we do the "speed quilts". When our stash of quilts start to get a bit low we all chip in and make up quilts quickly. Either method it is nice to have someone there for help when needed.

k9dancer 10-17-2012 08:31 AM

Like many others, I enjoy all phases of the process, from drawing my sketches, choosing fabrics, and even doing the math. Once I have my plan, I also enjoy deciding which method will get the piecing done the fastest and most efficiently use my time. Then I take FOREVER to decide how I want to quilt it. I love doing the binding, because it means I am done. While I have been heard to say, "Finishing is over-rated," I also believe "Finished is better than perfect." It just depends which frame of mind I am in that day. While I have been quilting long enough that my points match more often than not, and my seams are mostly consistent, I don't expect to ever be perfect, and fully subscribe to the 'galloping horse' concept.
Long story short, I quilt the way I want to, and hope everyone else does it his own way, too. If you don't enjoy the journey, why go on the trip?

jillnjo 10-17-2012 09:10 AM

Enjoyed this subject! I like every part of constructing a quilt. I'm always happy to see one finished!! So I can think of the next one,of course! I want my work to look good, but I'm still not a perfectionist. I stress the most over what to quilt in the blocks and borders once my top is done. I will force myself to try new things and to master them! I have learned I can truly do more than I thought. Practice and more practice. I get lots more done when I work alone and enjoy it the most, although I like to talk, too!!

Thanks for my first laugh of the day. I run my kitchen stove at top speed, can't wait to get out of there. Nothing more boring than cooking for me. :)
I love all our differences!

My daughter-in-law quilts and we regret we are 1,300 miles apart...we would LOVE to quilt together as would my friend 160 miles from me! I think it is wonderful bonding as I have NOBODY here NO car to get to my quilt guild meetings....I am so down over this!

maryellen2u 10-17-2012 03:11 PM

Someone explained it to me one time a long time ago. Some people are process people. They enjoy the whole journey of the experience. Others are product people and their sense of accomplishment is when it is done. They are the ones who time themselves to see if they can make this one faster than that one. These modes operate in all fields whether quilters or house painters. Me, I am a little of both. I enjoy the process but then after a while I am sick of the project hanging around and I just want to "git er done!" That's why my quilts do not have lovely borders. By the time I get to the borders I have no more patience left and just want to finish the ____thing!

I really can relate to a lot of what you are saying. My best friend is out in MO, and I'm in NY. Neither of us has much time to quilt, but if we were closer, we would make the time to hang together, unwind, and share our crafts. I don't have anyone here to share my love of quilting, and I have tried to get others to share my love, but it hasn't worked. I'm even willng to set them up with everything, and teach. No dice... I have a car, but don't really have time to spend hours out. Is there a solution? You bet!!!!.. Don't be down!!!! Mee up with your friend, and daughter inlaws as often asyou can, but there are wonderful friends you will meet on the QB, and you can spend days with everyone virtual quilting.. There are members that would love to share what is going on in your quilting life. I have a friend in MI that I have never met, but we exchange fabric, advise, and good will.. We have never met, but that hasn't stopped out friendship. We are able to laugh at the stupid things we do, etc.

I agree "good topic"
I find I will power down for two days on the current project from early am to late evening, after the second day I have to walk away for four days, go back power down for two days, I seem to work in fits and starts..
I am planning which is going to be my next project, (I have many clogging my brain..:D) even before I get the binding on the current project. I don't think I can allow myself to have more than one quilt going at a time, I have a lady neighbor who could have several various projects in various stages of completion, I personally couldn't do that, one up one down...
as far as speed quilting... not me, I am slow and deliberate, I suppose it comes with the territory as a new quilter. I think I would love to find a quilt group join. Maybe one of theses days...
i my favorite part of the quilting process is the designing and planing. I love to watch the idea in your head become the reality in your hands.

P-BurgKay 10-17-2012 05:19 PM

The whole process from beginning is what it is all about. Right now I am recovering from surgery rotator cuff and know that I can not quilt for another 3 months, but that does not keep me from fondling my fabric for my next project. Keep enjoying the whole process. By the I mostly hand quilt, would not think of having someone else have the fun of doing the actual quilting.

carolaug 10-17-2012 05:37 PM

I am the same...and with all of the people I want to make quilts for..I do not like to have UFO's...drives me batty...I love making and giving my quilts away. I will work all weekend to get it done,,.i am now getting a vit sloer...work tends to get in the way.

My favorite in the whole process is the piecing. Cutting is hard for me with arthritis and a bad back; but oh I do love sitting at the machine and putting all those pretty pieces together and see it all come together. Gives me such a sense of pleasure to see a completed top. Now as to sandwiching and the finishing it's necessary to get the end results but if I were a rich woman, I would have someone else do the cutting, quilting and binding....Dream on....

ube quilting 10-18-2012 01:17 PM

I have a friend that does this with everything. It's like she is rushing to get life over with. Very sad, I think. It makes doing stuff with her, from birthday parties to trips to LQS very unpleasent. Just get it done. I can't live like that.

I truely enjoy the whole journey.
peace

EDIT: Forgot to add that I really like "Putz Quilting"

Carole Vaden 10-20-2012 02:07 PM

Very well said and I agree with you.

LadyElisabeth 10-20-2012 02:35 PM

I enjoy the whole process, but sometimes I need a quilt quickly. Then it's cut, sew, sandwich, quilt FAST.

sweetana3 10-20-2012 03:34 PM

I love to make quilts and I am very fast. I start out with one block and test the process and then figure out how to make it quicker and easier. I am organized and use a lot of chain piecing and paper piecing techniques. I am not going to change my way of doing it because someone else wants to go slow. I completely enjoy the whole process but I dont agonize over my decisions.

I once went to a needlework shop and had to stand around for 3 solid hours while a friend agonized over every decision. Never again. I have also spent hours and hours while long discussions of fabric went on. I drive myself now.

I remember one long arm teacher at the MQX show in Oregon. He went to his dealer and had his machine souped up to go almost 2X faster since he enjoyed working with a high speed machine and was very good with it. I would not dare tell him to slow down.

batikmystique 10-21-2012 09:17 AM

I was raised with the notion that "if something is worth doing, then it is worth doing well." I go at different paces when making a quilt depending upon the difficulty of the project. For me, it is done when it's done. I've taken classes where other quilters just run the fabric through so fast as if they were Evelyn Wood (speed reading teacher for those who may not be old enough to remember) students. Nine times out of ten their seam widths vary and don't match up. I just can't justify sacrificing quality for speed.
