Feeling your pain--our LQS had all kits 30% off this week--ran by Monday to pick up just a "little more" needed material and walked out with it, plus 5 fat quarters and TWO kits--yikes! And our quilt show is this weekend and know I'll buy stuff, get my rotary blades sharpened(which is what I really need to spend on) and likely bid on silent auction stuff. Just keep telling myself that the fabric for the 8 quilts I'm now stashing won't spoil in the next 18 months when I retire (and am too broke to do this!).

Dar-midlife 09-20-2011 02:58 PM

Oops, what I meant was I used the "Turning Twenty Again" for those. I know you can have nice, large FQ packs for that one-like the 30 makes a nice King.

There are lots of other FQ patterns too if this doesn't appeal to you.

I was theer on Saturday. It was a great show. Did some spending but I think I kept it under control.

I love to spend foolishly at a quilt show. That is why I save up a lot of money knowing I will be attending one. If I see it, I want it. Now. I may never see it again. I've actually used all but one tool that I bought at a Quilt show. Patterns not so much.

I give myself limits. But one needs things to look at & feel.

Good idea: Smart calculating:: I like this method and need to stick to it::: Thanks for the advise:

I usually manage to spend less than $20 at shows. However, in April at a Denver show I bought a very expensive iron. I really enjoy using it and it was well worth it. It does have a lifetime guarantee.

Maggiem 09-21-2011 08:22 AM

I've bought gadgets and fabric and tools and had them 'disappear' into a storage box. Sometimes it takes them years to emerge again...

When they finally do, I tell myself that I've just been given a gift from my past little self... a gift from my past to my present. Then I say a big thank you to my past and use the object happily!

So since I missed the Oaks, PA show, - watching the Grandkids - are there any shows coming up in the next couple of month. Maybe in the eastern PA,DE,NJ,MD area.

rosemarie34 09-21-2011 10:02 AM

I was there on Sat and I don't think it's spending money foolishly when the prices were SO good !! I bought 39 spools of thread for embroidery, some TAP transfer paper and some needles...lots of good bargains there...

My 3rd time at the Houston International Quilt Show, I spend almost $10,000.00. That was the year I found out my DH loves me unconditionally!

That is a simple Diappearing 9 patch. thanks for the compliment

I love that quilt too. Isn't it something what you can do with color. Are the white & the yellow solid colors? I would love to make a Dissappearing 9 Patch with only 3 fabrics.

Our show is coming next week and I've been saving for a few months. I will stick to my budget, I will stick to my budget. Don't I sound convincing.

True!!

I second that. that's how I do all my shopping that has the potential to get costly (ie. hobby shopping/big purchases/holiday shopping).

berrypatch 09-22-2011 08:32 PM

I also went to this show and enjoyed it - was being good - only bought 3 patterns & 2 fat quarters. Naturally one of the fat quarters won't work & naturally the fabric to match was at home !

Hey don't feel guilty! I go to three quilt shows a year - spring summer and autumn, and if I see some fabric crying to be taken home it goes with me!! I don't drink or smoke, and I always say my quilting passion keeps me off the streets and off the milkman!!

msquiltalot 09-25-2011 07:46 PM

I'm sure I will when I return from Houston Quilt Festival in Nov. I want longarm supplies and some new gadgets. You notice I didn't say I need.........

mighty 09-23-2013 07:01 AM

Love quilt shows, and all the goodies.

Tashana 09-23-2013 12:55 PM

I really liked the international quilts section. And, yes, I did spend some money. I bought wool, wool, and then some more wool, and some wool patterns. It was fun.

mic-pa 09-23-2013 02:26 PM

I am going to the Airing of the Quilts on Oct. 5th also. Hopethe weather is good. I case no one knows its in Tunkhannock Pa. A nice event and lots to see.

Luv Quilts and Cats 09-23-2013 03:17 PM

Sometimes you just need to let go and enjoy. I don't think it is foolish. It maybe that something you bought will turn out to be something you treasure!

RedGarnet222 09-23-2013 03:46 PM

Oh well, now you got what you want for Christmas and no one knows how to buy that, right?

Wow! What did you get?

cashs_mom 09-23-2013 06:49 PM

Since I live in Houston and go to the International Quilt Fest every year, I've started keeping an envelope in my drawer. At the end of every week, I put some money in. That way when Quilt Fest rolls around I have enough money that I can splurge if I want. It makes it a lot more fun! And I find that when I can buy pretty much what I want, I don't really spend as much. It seems like things look better to me if I can't really afford them.

sewbizgirl 09-23-2013 08:28 PM

Don't beat yourself up too bad... it's all part of having fun at the quilt show!

DOTTYMO 09-23-2013 11:44 PM

I love going to a quilt show for 2 days day one I look at half of quilts on show then wonder around the stalls. Deciding on what I would like to buy. Usually leave day one with nothing. Go home and decide on what I want and need. I actually make a written list. Go to day 2 usually leaving list behind. I then go and purchase and enjoy. One year bought a sewing machine and realised I could not carry box to car, so purchased a bag to fit it in with wheels.

When I go home I can also heck if show prices are cheaper or free delivery. If you see me at a show I will be the crackerjack person with arms full of gadgets and fabric. I have to go to steength training prior to a show.

I went to a quilt show (Raintree Quilters) in Evansville, in. I'm so mad at myself for one purchase. I found some homespun for $2.9something. I picked one piece, 5 yardss. When I took time to open it and wash it, I found a WIDE fabric-------didn't measure it buy it's way beyond 45", probably 54, mayber 60" wide. If I'd known how wide it is, I'd have bought more.

Saw some beautiul quilts. And darn it, my phone camera was not wanting ot cooperate.

Nantie 09-24-2013 03:17 AM

I always knew I was probably in the "majority" and not the "minority" in my spending on must-haves when i enter a quilt show or shop...now if I could just organize it so I knew what I have and could find it when I feel the need.

DonnaPBradshaw 09-24-2013 04:23 AM

My friends know how much I love panels! I make them into table runners and they are really fun to have and give away. Glad to know I'm not alone in that category! We have a big sale right around my birthday every year here in Utah and I tend to go crazy because I have birthday money in my hand. So there you go! if your a quilter it's a given that you go overboard at times!
