Normally I don't worry about putting something on the ruler to keep it in place, but I did put sandpaper dots on my ruler and I was really glad I did.

kakels 12-17-2010 01:12 PM

yikes! I'm just a beginner so I can't help. But I must say you are brave!

kakels 12-17-2010 01:13 PM

I just see you are from Oshkosh. I'm from Kewaunee

eaglebeak1960 12-17-2010 01:19 PM

I use the sandpaper dots too work well.. they will fall off from time to time. Make sure you put em where they will not interfer with your measuring.

when i did mine i took the advice from someone on the board to use a counter that you could walk around so you didn't have to move your fabric around.

pvquilter 12-17-2010 02:20 PM

Just got my ruler today, but probably won't be able to try this until after the holidays and all company is gone.

it is a good idea the something on back of rulers and to be able to walk around or move cutting mat w/out moving material. my DD and i made 3 just alike last weekend, now all i have to do is get backing done..

part of my message is gone, hmmmmmm.....

Susy 12-17-2010 03:13 PM

Good advice to have a table you can walk around. Also, somebody mentioned before that they used a smaller rotary cutter to cut across the top part of the ruler and that is a super idea. I didn't have one so I cut the small part at the top of the ruler with my scissors and that worked find too. Once you do one you will be surprised at how easy it is. DMyers, I love yours with the binding around the outside, that looks SO good!

I write all the measurements down out of my pattern book. As I cut them, I mark it off on the ones written so I don't mess up my book.

Busygranny Sometimes we have to just bite the bullet and cut.
If you cut the long centre ones first then work outwards from the centre it works best. At least that's how I made mine. I made mine without a pattern or a ruler. Made myself a cardboard ruler.

busygranny 12-17-2010 04:57 PM

Yes, we are neighbors

busygranny 12-17-2010 05:41 PM

I just subscribed to their newletter. I said no more rulers but after seeing the butterfly I just may change my mind.

busygranny 12-18-2010 06:10 AM

Whats one more ruler..........ha ha! I got some that I don't even know what they are for, but what the heck..I may use them eventually. Just hope GOD lets me into heaven pulling a red wagon full of my quilting equipment.

Norene B 12-18-2010 06:51 AM

In the faqs page, there are corrections for some of the designs. Make sure you check there before doing any cutting on some of the patterns. This is on phillipsart.com site

damaquilts 12-18-2010 06:51 AM

And I have some that are still in the package.:-) I figure I may use them Someday. Shoot I still have the different width plexiglass strips that was what we used to cut strips back in the day. LOL I have no idea why.

You made me laugh very early this morning (for me at least, 10AM is early!). Last night I was looking at a ruler that is really nothing more than a square cut diagonally at a wonky angle. Supposed to make blocks with a curved look to them. At 2AM I was absolutely sure I <<<needed>>> one but was too lazy to go get a credit card out of my pocket book. Now, many hours later I can't even remember the name of the ruler so I guess I really didn't need it anyway!

jolo 12-18-2010 07:11 AM

sewnmom 12-18-2010 08:16 AM

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa busygranny.....kudos for you....molly

decky 12-18-2010 09:17 AM

I live in Minnesota and I had to send for mine also. Got it from Calla Lily Quilt Shop. But google spicy spiral and it should bring up other shops that carry the pattern.

decky 12-18-2010 09:19 AM

I haven't read the pattern yet, just a quick look. An wondering if you cut the strips differnt lengths and then make the strata.

busygranny 12-18-2010 09:27 AM

Welllll.....everything is cut, hopefully.Am going to attempt sewing shortly. Do I just start with the little ones and work up to the large? I may be calling if I get stuck.

busygranny 12-18-2010 09:33 AM

yes you do cut them different lengths. That is as far as I am now.

Start with the smallest ones. Sew together matching the widest ends.

newjeepgreen 12-18-2010 11:36 AM

THIS IS A VERY EASY AND QUICK PATTERN TO DO. ONCE YOU HAVE THE FIRST ONE DONE YOU WILL WANT TO PICK OUT CO ORDINATING FABRICS FROM YOUR STASH TO MAKE MORE. I HAVE MADE ABOUT TEN ALL DIFFERENT COLOURS AND SOME CHRISTMAS ONES. NEVER THOUGHT I COULD THEM BUT THEY GO TOGETHER SO QUICKLY. WHEN I BOUGHT MY RULER FROM PHILIPS I GOT PATTERN FOR SPICY RUNNER AND ALSO FREE ANGEL PATTERN.

busygranny 12-18-2010 12:08 PM

I know, I am so excited, I am now sewing them togethe and I can see how nice it will be. I didn't get the angel pattern, just a picture of it. Does it look easy? I thought it looked neat.

granniegg 12-18-2010 02:13 PM

Alex Anderson's site had put clear nail polish on the edges and sprinkled salt to keep the ruler from moving around

Eisgoow 12-18-2010 02:14 PM

well, that is a curvy one, but not one I saw !! THANK you so much. I am going to print that out

I'm pretty sure you match the NARROW ends, not the wide ends. I've made three of these so far, and that's what I did.

Wendy,
Thank you sew much for that correction. I talked to BusyGranny and she is matching the narrow ends. Ouch! That's what happens when I try to talk from memory. I'm so glad that you mentioned that here. I'm also glad that BusyGranny looked at the pattern before she started sewing. I made two of these runners and they came out real good. I just spoke without checking first.
Thanks, again.

cmilton 12-18-2010 05:33 PM

where do you find those sandpaper dots?

pal 12-18-2010 07:18 PM

Eaglebeak 1960, Your little ones are gorgeous!!!!!
What a beautiful picture.

busygranny 12-18-2010 08:16 PM

well, now I am learning how to RIP! Dang. Had the runner all sewn and was so pleased and excited. Layed it out and lo and behold, both pieces going the same way!!!!! So now its rip, rip, rip!!!NOw I have learned, they have to be oposite ways. Oh well. So it goes. But thanks so much to KathieAire for personal interst in my project and got me on the right track.

jean knapp 12-19-2010 04:04 PM

just bought the pattern and am waiting for it to arrive. I do have a small cutting board that swivels around. Guess I will be using that. Not sure probably wont start until after the holidays
