Spoiled quilter.

My friends say I am a spoiled quilter. When I see a pattern, fabric, ruler, gadget, tool, or even machine I want to try I buy it. I want it now. LOL I rarely buy new clothes, shoes, and never buy jewelry and only the basic make up. Those items do not interest me. I have been with them shopping and they will drop a hundred dollars on a purse and not blink. I buy a quilt kit for a hundred and they say I'm spoiled. Who else here admits to being a spoiled quilter?

SusieQOH 11-21-2019 07:11 AM

I am. When I want something I buy it.
But like you, a lot of that other stuff doesn't interest me. I do love jewelry though, but I have all I want. My granddaughter is going to be like Liz Taylor someday haha. Unless her sibling is a girl then they can split the haul :)

Quilting is my joy and that's where my money goes. I don't care what anyone says! As long as I have the money it's nobody's business! I would never go into debt though. That's just not me.

PS One thing bugs me though. I seem to have an aversion to specialty rulers. I don't know why? I know you love them. I have some but my frugal side comes out I guess haha

Onebyone 11-21-2019 07:19 AM

I hate debt and DH loathes paying interest and will go without before paying it. Everything we buy is paid off in 30 days. Our first house took 10 years to pay off and DH was beside himself to get it paid for. Debt is the big four letter word in our house. LOL

SusieQOH 11-21-2019 07:20 AM

I'm the same way!!! I sleep well at night lol
I refuse to pay interest. Nope. Every month my card
gets paid in full. My husband is the same way.

Iceblossom 11-21-2019 07:23 AM

We do not have a large budget, but my husband wishes to spoil me and does to the extent he is able and he always encourages me with my quilting. I am joyful for my friends that have bigger budgets and bigger houses than mine, and they get to fill them with whatever it is they love. I have my "if I win the lottery dreams" and if that happens I will have a wonderful studio.

Today I'm going to the local sew expo, with all the repairs going on I let him know I expected to spend some money today to make sure I didn't have to watch every penny. He even went out to get me cash, I told him most vendors had the card scanners now but he wanted to make sure I had some on hand. One of the repairs is my car has been in the shop for almost two weeks now, had two difficult to reach sensors (read expensive labor) to replace, but my Tuesday group hostess will be driving another lady and I to the event. I'm hoping car will be done today or tomorrow, and then on Tuesday we get the hot water replaced -- which is going to cost about the same as the last really good deal on a long arm I saw, but we don't have room for a long arm anyway. Well, if we completely give up on the idea of a living room we could and the hubby would say go for it.

So... maybe a pair of Kai Scissors? I need some good scissors... Or I've given up looking for my 2.5" long ruler, time for a replacement. Maybe some thread? I really do have enough fabric but there might be something I don't have yet that I can't live without :)

Jordan 11-21-2019 07:23 AM

I am just like you Onebyone. I don't wear makeup and never shop for clothes (in fact-I hate shopping for anything but fabric). I never wear jewelry except wedding and mother's ring. When I go to a quilt shop I just feel this over whelming good feeling and could stay there for hours. My husband always says "what do you need more fabric for-you have so much now". Husbands just don't understand!

SusieQOH 11-21-2019 07:24 AM

My sister has a friend who has maxxed out every credit card she gets (and she keeps getting new ones) cashed in her savings to pay off debt. But she hasn't changed a bit. I wouldn't sleep at night if I lived that way.

SusieQOH 11-21-2019 07:25 AM

My husband understands it. He loves woodworking and is always in the market for something. So he gets it. And he isn't one to question me anyway. We just don't work that way.

I am the same way as far as paying interest on our credit card bill. I pay it off every month and feel so thankful that I am blessed with a nice warm home and am able to pay bills in full and still enjoy sewing every day.

juliasb 11-21-2019 07:26 AM

Me! I will take a ruler over clothes any day! A couple yards of fabric in my favorite colors excites the heck out of me. A new pattern with everything I need blows me out of the world!! Not many I know share this excitement other than my quilt guild friends. My dream is to someday have a real long arm just for me! That would be heaven on earth. Right now I would be happy and spoiled with a thread clipper. Many would think that I was spoiled with that. Who on earth would think that this would be a most treasured holiday gift.

Tartan 11-21-2019 07:29 AM

You are not spoiled, you just have your priorities straight.

SusieQOH 11-21-2019 07:29 AM

I've never been interested in owning a longarm although they are fabulous. I don't know why. But since I'm still trying to FMQ successfully i bought a nice machine for it.
I send quilts out that I can't handle. So I do love longarms. I just don't have a desire for one.

Sounds just like my attitude towards debt and interest. Although we did not pay our house off as quickly as you (took 15 years). When we signed the mortgage I couldn't sleep well for about a week. I am frugal to the point of being a cheapskate. We only eat out a couple times a year and that is usually for a special occasion or if we are travelling. I always bring my lunch to work and will only eat lunch out maybe 3 times a year. I wear my clothes and shoes until they are worn out. I hang on to my cars until they start costing more to keep than to trade in and buy a new one.
But I am also thrifty with my quilting purchases. I don't go on quilty shopping trips very often. I set a budget when I do go on a FART (Fabric Acquisition Retail Therapy) and also when I go to a show and will only spend that much and often don't even spend that. But because it is so rare (I may go two years without attending a show or going on a shopping trip), I save up and my budget is usually $300 to $500. If I don't spend it bam back into savings it goes.

When I started my search for a LA I saved to pay cash for it and once I had that, I was able to purchase a dealer demo so saved on that. I have one sewing machine that I bought at least 15 or 16 years ago and have money in savings if it dies I can replace it. I do still have my first sewing machine as a backup but it hasn't been turned on in over 10 years. I don't buy kits but I have purchased the occasional specialty ruler. Some I have yet to try out but fully intend to. (Like my 10 degree wedge, my Quick Curve Ruler and a couple of Deb Tucker ones I got on close out so got half price). I don't think I have ever been accused of being spoiled on a quilty shopping trip.

Oh, I desire a computer driven long arm with a burning desire! I'd take one without a computer too, it's what I used before but I do need a stitch regulator. The quilting design part is still a stumbling point because I just don't think in those design terms, but my proficiency was ok and I loved the speed of work, a small quilt was a fun thing to do instead of something that required an audible groan and internal fortitude :p I currently have right around 20 completed tops that aren't quilts yet.

In my lottery dreams, I have a professional level Statler and I call her Elvira...

But hubby and I also live on a cash economy. Took us awhile for us to realize that we just aren't good with temptations of credit and we are better off this way but man, it can be hard to deal with a bunch of things at one time.

jmoore 11-21-2019 07:48 AM

I think I fall into the category of a spoiled quilter...but I rarely purchase fabrics or gadgets on impulse, I usually have a project in mind. Therefore, I have a modest stash and notions that I use frequently but I do feel blessed to have nice machines and a beautiful sewing space to work.

Barb2018 11-21-2019 09:02 AM

Back when Hubby and I were both working, I feathered my nest. If I saw it and wanted it, I bought it. So now that we're on a fixed income, I have a decent stash, quilt kits, rulers, thread, stabilizers, scissors, cutting mats, needles in bulk, rotary blades......you get the picture. I may need the occasional yardage for a binding, but by and large I just don't really need anything. But I remember all those days shopping and going for what I wanted....now I'm so glad I planned it this way.

Doggramma 11-21-2019 09:27 AM

I’m definitely a spoiled quilter. But it’s coming after many years of having to scrimp and make do. So I feel very blessed. I’m also not into fancy clothes and don’t wear jewelry. But I will spend a couple hundred dollars on a purse. They can last forever.

Krisb 11-21-2019 10:08 AM

Another spoiled quilter here, but also another debt avoider. Our credit card is paid off automatically each month. We have not had a mortgage in over 30 years. We pay cash for cars. I have my stash will last longer than I do. But there are still occasions when purchases are required. The only “big” clothing items for me are shoes, because I have narrow feet and can’t buy most shoes. I worked 35 years to enjoy retirement—and I am going to!

toverly 11-21-2019 10:37 AM

Definitely a spoiled quilter. I am like you in that I am content with simple clothes, makeup and accessories. I'll drop $100 at a Quilt Store and purchase $6.00 t shirts at Walmart. The benefits of not having to purchase work clothes and a luxury that church is come as you are now.

tallchick 11-21-2019 11:29 AM

I quit smoking years ago, Cha Ching, I do Keto and eat one meal a day so my grocery bills are very tiny. I’m not a new clothes shopper, but since losing 40lbs I had to go buy new clothes, I’m tall so tall clothes are more expensive and I started a new part time job so I had buy some work clothes. This is the first time in over a decade that I bought new clothes. I’m cleaning out my stash of a bazillion fat quarters, jelly rolls, and other precuts and selling them so I can buy Batiks since I prefer to work with them vs regular quilting cottons. It’s just me so I do as I please.........

sewingpup 11-21-2019 11:37 AM

oh my....my job was a tough one and I had to travel a lot.....so I would get bummed....until one day a good friend suggested that I find out where the quilt shops were on my travels....and reward myself for getting my job down....oops....I took all my breaks in those quilt shops...ok, I got a half hour...I got real good at scooping out the shop and buying something....tee hee...Now I am retired and have a very ample stash....I seldom buy much new as I have a lot a home already....ok...it is a few years old...but who cares...it is just as much fun to stitch! and as the prices have lately gone up hugely....I just consider that I made a wise retirement investment while I was working...

Cattitude 11-21-2019 11:42 AM

To call you spoiled for how you spend your own hard earned money is just plain rude.
I guess we all have our weak spots and I am definately a fabric junkie. However, like most others here I would not buy anything that I couldn't pay for right away. I have had otherwise intelligent people tell me they 'had' to buy something because it was at a such a great price....and then have proceeded to pay credit card interest rates for months and months to get the item paid off. Does no one ever bother to do the math?

LisaInOhio 11-21-2019 12:00 PM

tallchick, another quilting keto Lisa here. :-)
I am definitely a spoiled quilter. I just started about 9-10 months ago and I'm definitely all in. I have created a sewing room in half of a bedroom (other half reserved for grandkids visits) and have acquired tons of sewing stuff since, including a $1000 machine, IKEA hack furniture, plus a decent stash and lots of precuts. I am lucky and grateful to be able to afford to indulge my new hobby (without going into debt for it) and my husband is totally okay with it and supports me as he sees how much I enjoy it. The one thing I need more of (and can't get) is . I work full time and we are very busy with our daughters and grandkids so I don't get to sew nearly as much as I wish I could. But like Barb2018, there is always retirement to look forward to and I'll be well stocked!

cashs_mom 11-21-2019 12:08 PM

I do! And I love it! I"m like you Onebyone. I buy clothes when I need them and then it's mostly basics like pants, underwear, socks and shirts. I make some of my tops and almost all of my jackets. I'm not extravagant about shoes and purses. I have a lot but that's mostly because I buy things that last and don't get caught up in what is the "latest". I also buy fabric, books and gadgets when I want because I feel that it's okay and I'm worth it.

betthequilter 11-21-2019 01:53 PM

I don't spend my money on drugs, alcohol or men. I spend it on fabric.

SewingSenior 11-21-2019 04:36 PM

Onebyone, I'm with you. When I quit my day job 13 years ago I quit more than a job. I quit wearing high heels...I quit wearing makeup...and I quit buying business appropriate clothes. I pay for everything I possibly can with my credit card (because I get 2% cash back) but always pay it off in full with the next statement. I love to quilt however I refuse to spend more than $9 or $10 a yard for fabric and not even that much if I can wait for a sale. Don't worry about what others think or say about your hobby, most of them are just jealous that they can't make a thing of beauty like the last quilt kit you put together.

Conchalea 11-21-2019 04:39 PM

I'm not a "spoiled" anything. I have 3 hobbies that can really cost: yarn for knit & crochet projects, fabric for quilting, & my Harley. I ride anywhere from 5000-10,000 miles each year, with 8000 about average. That is my costliest habit, by far. A major checkup every 5000 miles, new tires every 10-15,000 miles, & it really adds up. So I'm very careful with fabric & yarn purchases due the money drain that is the Harley.

NJ Quilter 11-21-2019 04:53 PM

I would probably fall into the 'spoiled' category as well. I buy what I want when I want it. Virtually everything is cash including cars. DH is the shopaholic. But on a small level. I don't buy quilting things for stash...I buy for projects. I have a 10-15 yr old computerized machine that is a workhorse and a (dirt cheap to me) FW as a back up. I also have a couple of other vintage machines that, again, were dirt cheap.

DH has no issues with anything I spend $$ for. Then again, if he did, he probably wouldn't be my hubs, lol! But I afford him the same latitude. We have minimal debt and only because it might be convenient for a couple of months. So, if that's the definition of spoiled - count me in!

Sharonquilts 11-21-2019 04:56 PM

Okay, I'm going to disagree with all of you. You are not spoiled...you are blessed. You have a talent and love for quillting which makes you happy. Sounds to me like you spend your $ wisely. You probably gift most of your quilts which makes others very happy. You may sell some which lets you replenish what you need to quilt. Now doesn't that sound like "blessed" rather than "spoiled"? Keep up the good work!

JustAbitCrazy 11-21-2019 05:11 PM

Everyone is spoiled in their own way. You have your way, your friends have theirs. So who are they to be calling you spoiled? (They actually sound a little jealous to me.)

Dougstermd 11-21-2019 05:43 PM

Yes you are probably Spoiled. But that’s not a bad thing. Of course buying the latest gadgets might not improve your skills. An ex girlfriend introduced me to a rotary cutter and I’m a definitely a fan. I’m still lacking in skills but I know people have sewing for along time and produced beautiful quilts at home.

Conchalea, you may be my kindred spirit. I too am or was a Harley rider and a quilter. Sadly arthritis has taken control of my joints to the point where I worry about laying my Softail down hard. I still have it with the hope I can ride just one more time. I still have 21 continental states to ride through.

Anniedeb 11-21-2019 09:31 PM

I'm a spoiled quilter too! I buy what I want, when, or if I need it. We also believe debt is a dreaded word, and is not part of our lives. We're both retired and worked long and hard to get where we are, and planned accordingly for this time. I love clothes/accessories, but also love the thrill of the hunt, buying things on sale, clearance, or with coupons. I just bought an $80 leather purse on sale for $10.99, and a $48 top for $4.99!

Mkotch 11-22-2019 03:52 AM

Guess we're quite a club - spoiled quilters and proud of it. I noticed the other day that our towels are over 20 years old, as are some of the tops I've been wearing. That's OK - my stash stays at a stable size since I use as much as I buy. Retirement is bliss.

Frances41 11-22-2019 04:41 AM

I agrre with you. Quilts will lasst longer than styles of clothes.

lindaschipper 11-22-2019 04:48 AM

While I've never paid $100 for a quilt kit I could do so. My husband and I are not super rich, but we are more than o.k... therefore if I see fabric or patterns, or templates that I want I do buy them. Having said that, it comes out of MY retirement and social security not his. House and cars are paid off and so we each can spend on our "hobbies".

rjwilder 11-22-2019 04:55 AM

I am not spoiled, we both worked hard for our retirement. We deserve to spend money on our hobbies and whatever else we feel like. We have no debt, we pay off our credit card every month. We are not flashy people, do not go out to eat like many of our friends do several times a week. We go out maybe 2-3 times a year. We buy clothing, shoes, etc., but not from Nordstroms, more like Macy's or Kohl's. I color my own hair, no fake fingernails, I do wear make-up and use good skin products and sunscreen. We live in FL, play golf, swim, go to the gym in our 55+ community. So many activities, clubs, etc., to do here we don't need to leave the community. We live in a golf cart community so we have 2 golf carts and only one car. We really love our life and financial freedom.

grann of 6 11-22-2019 05:08 AM

I amdefinitely a "spoiled" quilter. My DH worked very hard over the years so we could have a decent retirement. He left me comfortable that I can buy what I want when I want if I want. I have top of the line sewing machines, a long arm for my own and my friends' use, and all the latest rulers/templates. A few weeks ago my DS was here, and I commented that I would like to put new siding on the house, his comment was, "Buy a new sewing machine instead, Mom. You will get more enjoyment out of that than new siding on the house." I think I'll keep this "boy", he knows what is important to me. My CC are paid off monthly, never made a car payment, and haven't made a house payment since we first got married.

fruitloop 11-22-2019 05:15 AM

I like being spoiled. LOL

tranum 11-22-2019 06:12 AM

DH has saved us thousands by doing our repairs himself. He likes to eat out but he’s starting to agree with me it’s often a rip off. Vacations have been by car with a camp stove & a cooler of food unless we see an interesting restaurant to try. We enjoy eating at a park with a beautiful view more than dropping money on a plate of fries.

No mortgage, carry no credit card balance, no car loans. Pickup is new, car is 12 years old & hasn’t cost us anything in repair so no plans to replace it. I use simple cosmetics from a department store but it lasts long. I buy new good quality shoes & underthings because they last long. I get complements on my thrift store clothes - probably because I know what colors look best on me & I only buy good brands that fit & wash better.

It’s not hard for us to live economical and still have everything we need. I can see others here think along the same line.
