My Mother used Niagara starch for years and I do not recall any of her clothes and/or quilts being eaten by a bugs.

I always use faultless. Works for me.

The first time I used starch was in a log cabin class. The instructor explained that the problem of flaking happens because the starch isn't given enough time to be absorbed into the fibers of the fabric before hitting it with the iron. It's just sitting on top of the fabric then immediately hit with the iron and scorched off. Now when I use starch I spray and walk away for about a minute then iron. Works great every time.

I had seen the vodka-water recipe awhile back, but had my doubts. After seeing the link again, I thought what the heck, cant hurt to try it. So I did and I like it very much! Similar results as Mary Ellen's and way cheaper!

I mix my own starch but use the gold cap Niagara starch for applique - it is sprayed into a container then painted on the selvage then the raw edge is pressed down.

personally i can not stand the smell of the Mary ellen's stuff---so i don't use it. i will stick with the niagra which has been around for a long-long time and is much less expensive since it doesn't say (quilting) on it- which seems to add a few bucks- and it doesn't have perfume added to it...which i find horrible.

You can't stand the smell. This weekend I've been spray starching a great deal. I use the powder starch and make up myself. As I am ironing my mind was floating back to times as a child with my grandma great grandma when they were ironing such happy memories it took no time at all. For once was sad to finish.
