EUREKA!!!!!!!!! I'm posting this all over the place because I am THAT excited. (hmmmmm .... i think ... maybe ... i need a life.   )

http://www.sewingmachinesplus.com/P60498.php

just tried it for the first time. i just had to adjust my needle position to find the center of the foot (which is because of the machine, not the foot. i always have to do that). it's super-easy to see whether or not your edge is lined up with the foot.

i even tested it for ditch-stitching on a sample sandwich. dead-center. if i didn't know where the stitching was, i wouldn't know where the stitching was! it isn't a "proper" quilting foot; i had to pull gently from the back to keep it moving smoothly; but once i got the hang of it i was amazed.

fabricluvr 04-08-2008 06:28 AM

that's really neat, and i need a quarter inch foot, but i have an older kenmore :(

any ideas?

*update* i found an adapter for my super-high shank and then an adaptor to fit snap-on feet. when they arrive, i'll try my Janome snap-on feet to see if they work.

i hope, i hope, i hope!

Elizabeth A. 04-08-2008 07:05 AM

That does look great, and I need a 1/4 foot as well. It looks to me as though that Singer foot is a snap on. Who knows if one Brand snap on feet fit on other snap on machines? All over Ebay they say Brother, Elna, Janome and Newer Kenmore have interchangable feet (don't know that I believe them...) Your rave makes me wonder.

kathy 04-08-2008 09:21 AM

well I"D like to see ur foot Dearie!

Rose Marie 04-08-2008 10:54 AM

The only problem I see is that you cannot make a scant 1/4 inch cause the hole is small.
I had a problem with my 1/4 inch foot cause my machine had wide feet.
So I bought an edging foot and adjusted the needle. No more jurking to the side.

i CAN make a scant quarter-inch with this foot. my needle position adjusts in teeeeeeeny tiny increments. two clicks to the right for me and i'm scant. :-)

it's a universal snap-on. it'll fit just about any machine ... unless the machine has one with a super-narrow snap-grabber-thingie.

kathy, dear, to see my foot ... follow the link

Rose Marie 04-08-2008 11:11 AM

That was very informative. I always wondered what all those marks on the sides were for.

mary705 04-08-2008 11:23 AM

Thanks for the link, I think. LOL Looks like I might be spending at least $100. I do like the slide on machine extender, and a couple other feet maybe.

GMarie 04-08-2008 11:33 AM

This certainly looks like something I could use. I'm going to try my next quilt with a scant 1/4" and a different foot first though before spending the money... thanks!!

kathiwit 04-08-2008 12:12 PM

Elizabeth your cat looks just like my quilting partner. Booter is her name and she loves to make sure I am sewing everything correctly. (In her opinion anyway) I have a universal snap on 1/4th inch foot and it is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought it at Joanne fabrics and it fits my kenmore and I have also used it on my old singer

Minda 04-08-2008 12:58 PM

Patrice,
You do have a life. It is keeping us informed of everything we must have!! :D :D
What kind of sewing machine do you use this foot on?

kathiwit 04-08-2008 04:18 PM

I use it on my Kenmore, and myPlaff. Works great on both

In that case ... you each MUST have ... a tall, single, straight, good lookin', intelligent, funny, and (what the heck) rich guy you can introduce to me.

I will use my new foot mostly on my Simplicity Quilter's Classic and, occassionally, on my Singer Ingenuity. Someday, if I ever play and win a lottery, I shall use it on a Janome MC 11000.

Elizabeth A. 04-08-2008 04:46 PM

kathiwit you're right your Booter looks rather a lot like my Sunny, fluffy tail included it would appear. Sunny is not the brightest boy but he makes up for it in love. He loves me even when I rotary cut (that makes me crazy, I'm so afraid of one wrong tail flick! So I have to stop and put him on the floor).

So now if what you ladies are telling me... I also can use this foot?!?!? YIPPIE! My new Elna is coming Thursday and I'm so excited I could jump for joy. Partrice? Do you know how long they run their sales for at that site? Because I noticed that foot is on sale. :-)

Elizabeth A. 04-08-2008 04:51 PM

Are you talking about my husband? Okay so we're not rich, most days not even well off, but we have everything else. :-) I keep telling him the first time I married for love, but if I have to do again, I will marry for money!

i'm cornfeeoooozed. is your husband single?

kathy 04-09-2008 03:05 AM

ok my bad, I was just listening to you yak and didn't even see the link!

fabricluvr 04-09-2008 03:10 AM

can someone tell me the difference between 'type A' and 'type B' pressure feet? i'm getting dizzier trying to figure it out on these sewing machine accessory websites!

 :?

Elizabeth A. 04-09-2008 10:38 AM

Oh jeez, so sorry, I missed that.

nana2 04-12-2008 05:35 PM

I do okay with the 1/4 inch seams, but I have not perfected free motion quilting. I just don't get the fabric moving under the quilting foot smooth enough to have evenly spaced stitches. Today on our PBS station - America Sews with Sue Haussman she was using a "contraption" which she called a frame. It looked like a flat rectangle piece of heavy plastic with an opening (rather large) in the center. The quilt just lay down on this -- no clips, pins, etc. As the machine is sewing, instead of moving the quilt, this "frame" is moved. I can understand that a very very smooth piece of plastic (probably coated with some special application) would "glide" over the machine base and under the quilting foot. I've just never seen one of these frames, but would be interested in seeing one. Hopefully, it is simple enough that it would be about a zillion dollars cheaper than one of those long arm quilting machines. So if in your search for quilting supplies you see this or already know about it, please put up a post for all of us. Thanks.

Elizabeth A. 04-12-2008 06:15 PM

Viking makes one and Phaff makes one, they are about $1200, they are called "quilt tables". But here's the kicker. The manufature Wacom (as in drawing tablets, makes one too, they are selling it under the name Inspira brand name for around $300. I was thinking that for that price I might need to sweet talk hubby. Not to mention it sure would be nice for the keepsake quilt I'm working on for my daughter to be made "completely" by me. :D

Sally Dolin 04-19-2008 12:40 AM

Two things ladies. I couldn't figure out which foot you were talking about, but after years of fighting the scant 1/4" thing -I finally tried out a gadget I bought years ago called the Curve Master foot. Saw it demonstrated at the Chicago Quilt Show last Sunday. I've had it since 2004 never tried it till yesterday. It not only does curved lines without pinning - IT MAKES A Scant 1/4" every time. My partner and I recently started an on line business for quilters and our goal is to never sell anything we haven't personally tried and would purchase again. This baby is a winner. Just google Curve Master and it will come up at the top of the list. There is a good picture, chart of machines it fits. Awesome piece of equipment. Now when we cut kits with our Accucut machines for kits, everything will be perfect every time.

My second thing is the Free Motion Slider - since you are talking about free motion. I have yet to try this item, but am thinking about it. Any one here give it a try yet? I'm always up for input. It's very time consuming to try things enough to make good decisions and pre wash and iron all our kit materials. This is a very informative group.

just thought i'd share my latest project with everybody. i've not perfected the free motion quilting either, so i quilted this one using a size F spring hoop and did it on the embroidery machine 350E Janome. I paper pieced the top (bought at littlefoot.net) Hopefully my next one
will be better.

machine embroideried on janome 350E

Great job, love the colors. I like to make matching pillows too.

grandma24 04-19-2008 07:59 AM

I have been switching feet between all my mecchines for years, some times I have to change the snap part that goes on the shank but when I do that it worsk. I have Babylock,Kenmore and Viking and any more I do not know which feet belong where.

kathy 04-19-2008 08:24 AM

Nana, that contraption is called a fabric mover and they are pretty pricey, I saw it demoed at the Houston show but they only had a fat quarter on it, that does not show me that it makes it any easier to manuver a full size quilt!

grandma24 04-19-2008 09:13 AM

i have seen then in Nancy's Notions, but it would not be difficult to make one from pvc and plastic sheeting that you find at home depot.

nana2 04-19-2008 09:17 AM

Judging from the limited viewing on T.V., it look as though someone could have a company with laser cutting capibilities just "make one". I have heard that over the years some women, with husbands who worked in machine shops, ask their husband to make a foot that would accomplish certain tasks. Evidently women who sew and quilt are also engineers.

fabricluvr 04-19-2008 12:20 PM

i have the free motion slider and highly recommend it (even at the $30 price tag!). i've only used it on smaller projects, but it really seemed to make a difference.

and i just read about the curve master the other day! can't remember where, though. maybe online when i was looking for feet for my 'left needle position' machine :(

Elizabeth A. 04-19-2008 01:58 PM

fabricluvr~ You got me interested, so I looked up the free motion slider. It says it's telfon coated and sticks to the sewing machine. Is that like a static cling? I'm just wondering how much more "slippery" it is over the reg. extention table.

fabricluvr 04-19-2008 02:46 PM

not sure about your extension table, but i have an 'aftermarket' one. it fits my machine bed, but there are 'bumps' where the two join. this totally eliminates that and seems to give the bed just the right 'touch' to make me more comfortable with free motion (and i've had my issues, believe me!).

i'm not sure that it's actually 'static cling' (on the bottom side). it's more of a sticky plastic finish that kind of reminds me of what the acrylic stamps are made of (for card making, that cling to the acrylic block so you don't have to use adhesive). the top side is the teflon finish (so they say, you could fool me easily enough) that is really 'slippery'.

and something else that makes me think it's like the acrylic stamp finish is that the directions say if it becomes 'nonsticky' gently wash it with warm soapy water.

hope this helps!

quilterygal 04-19-2008 05:33 PM

Did I miss something? What is the name of the company making this wonderful 1/4" foot? Does it fit Janome and Bernia machines?

I have three 1/4 inch feet and the best one is the one I just bought. It has the little edge going down the side so your fabric will not go pass it. So you sew exactly 1/4 inch without haveing to keep your fabric lined up with the foot. It will do different sizes also. I have the foot Patrica has and I like it also but you are limited with the sizes and it will slide under the foot. Here is a picture of the foot I just got. It is amazing. I have been using it for the Mystery Quilt we are doing and wondering what took me so long to buy it. I saw it about six months ago and thought I had enough 1/4 feet. But boy I am glad I changed my mind. Check it out.

mary705 04-20-2008 03:00 AM

Did you get this one at the same site DonnaRae? They show one there that looks like it may be the same one, and the price isn't bad at all.

I was looking at it last night, and I like the litlle guide thing on it. I think they use one with a guide on Fon's & Porter all the time too.

Mary, Actually I got mine on Ebay for $9.95 It is a brother. But they are all over. I saw them at Hancocks by Singer, I have seen off brand name ones, so I guess just shop around. That is what I did. Do you want the Ebay site? The guide is the best. The fabric realy does not go under the foot.

mary705 04-20-2008 03:38 AM

Yes, that would be great. The one at the other site is $16.99, which isn't bad, and it also works with Brother, Singer and other machines. I use my Singer now, but also have a Brother, so my feet are interchangable. My Brother came with a walking foot, my Singer didn't, but I can interchange them, also my bobbins work for either machine.

I haven't used my Brother machine since I bought my Singer this past Christmas, the Brother was maybe a year old, but not computerized. My Singer has many more features. Had I known I was going to love quilting as much as I do, probably would have gone with a machine with more features in the first place.

But, will still keep my Brother, cause it is a little bit lighter to take with me if I ever join a guild or go to my Aunts houses to do some sewing for them.

nantucketsue 04-20-2008 04:16 AM

Patrice,

This looks great. I have a 1/4" foot which came with my Janome, but I like the transparency of your foot. Only problem is I don't have a swing needle. I wish they would just make a scant quarter inch foot. I love your cat by the way. He/she is so laid back, I wonder is this a reflection of your personality?

Here is the site I bought mine. http://stores.ebay.com/Kens-Sewing-and-Vacuum-Center

I have two brothers (3 counting serger) an older Kenmore and older Singer and all the feet are interchangeable. I understand that the newer Kenmore are not. Mine is from the early eightys, but believe me it is one good machine. Anyway most feet are interchangable now. Now it is low shank, high shank, slant shank and even then they now have adapters for say you have high shank, they have adapters so you can use low shank. Amazing. :D Let me know if you find the foot. I gave you the addy of the Ebay store, but it is also on regular ebay bid (but I think that is buy now too. Back to sewing. I am sewing step 2 now. I will be done today I hope!

mary705 04-20-2008 04:39 AM

Thanks for the link.

I'm finishing up on step 2 also. Woo Hoo!

Will post a pic after I have them all pressed and pinned into 10's.
