square quilts
I want to make the north star quilt from MSQC for a chirstmas gift for a male family member. I mentioned this to a quilting friend and she says she never makes square quilts.....he is quite tall and now I am not sure whether I should look for some other pattern I can make longer.....How do you all feel about square quilts?

Not my favorite. I prefer rectangular. They fits beds & bodies better!

I only do square quilts for lap size wheel chairs quilts. If a pattern is square, I just do more blocks or borders to make it rectangle.
|
you can always add extra borders just to the top and bottom

I too prefer a rectangular quilt. When I want to make a square quilt into a rectangular one I sometimes add some sort of either pieced or solid border top and bottom and then add a narrow border abound the whole thing. If I want to make a square quilt ( 60" square) into a bed size quilt, I have added a wider pieced border on three sides for the drop and then a narrow border around all four sides to finish it off.

I personally like rectangle quilts. I made a square quilt for my son's girlfriend and I didn't like it so added a border at the top and bottom before I took it to my LA quilter and loved it a lot better. I think it is personal choice tho'

I usually stick to square ones, but my current project needed something "extra" so I've just added an additional row of blocks to the bottom.

I love square quilts! They usually wind up between 60 and 72 inches. For a splash of color, you can put them on a bed, turning them on the diagonal for kings. I've not had any complaints from tall recipients, they can just use them on the diagonal.

agree with this 100%.

I generally make rectangular quilts for beds and cribs, but lately I've been making a few large square quilts for throws, think about 70" x70". I like this size for throws. It's big enough that both little daughters and I can curl up under it, and it's a great size for their 'tents'! My DH is six foot and the 70x70 size never seems to bother him at all. Both shapes of quilts have their uses.
