I just finished a Brenda Henning method STained Glass Table Runner, turned out pretty nice with using a twin needle to apply the bias tape. Anybody else tried this? I'm teaching a class on it and any additional tips to incorporate into my teaching on this method would be wonderful....

Thank you so much for your all your compliments, makes me feel great! The pattern is by Brenda Henning from her
book Indian Summer by Bear Paw Productions. The use of the twin needle does make a pattern on the reverse side which looks a little like serging. I have used the twin needle more and more for topstitching. The only thing you need to watch using it on this project is the width so that the width of the two lines of stitching suits the width of the bias tape. My class is in Glendale, Arizona, on the west side of Phoenix. Thanks for asking, all of you, you flatter me! |
The reason for the surged look on the back is you have only one bobbin, and both needle threads have to interact with the one bobbin thread. There is no way you won't get that sort of thread cross over look on the back. There is no way possible to sew with one thread going through both needles. The reason for twin needles is so that you see two lines of stitching on the front. I did some top-stitching with a double needle with a zit-zag stitch, and it was beautiful. I used Number 22 on the Bernina. You can't just sew with the width that is normal for that stitch. You have to put your needle down with your hand on the fly wheel until you get the width just right, or the needles will be too wide for the space in the throat plate. If you try that, be real careful.
