Stained Glass QAYG method
1 Attachment(s)
I just finished a Brenda Henning method STained Glass Table Runner, turned out pretty nice with using a twin needle to apply the bias tape. Anybody else tried this? I'm teaching a class on it and any additional tips to incorporate into my teaching on this method would be wonderful....

That is so beautiful, your work is outstanding. I love it.

Fabulous work! I used to own a stained glass studio and this is wonderfully reminiscent of the real thing.
very pretty!

Beautiful! I love that gold bias! I've never used a twin needle. I have one, just need to try it. Your colors are just gorgeous!
Oooooooh so pretty, i think i will need to try it.
I think using a twin needle was just genius!!!! It is gorgeous!
What a beautiful quilt. I've never used my twin needle for anything, really wasn't sure what to do with it!
Where do you live. I'd like to take your class.
That's beautiful! I'd love to try it.
it's beautiful!
Oh that is lovely and i have some of that gold tape but never used it.
Must echo what everyone else has said, that is fantastic. I would love to take a class for that technique
Very attractive.
Beautiful, wish I could take a class on this runner!
Your runner is beautiful! I have used the double needle before but not sure if I have a picture of my project. I also purchased one of Brenda's books when we visited Alaska in 2005 & haven't used it yet but still have hopes, it's one with wildlife in it.
Edited to add: When using the double needle you get kind of a serged look on the back so remember that if you're thinking of using it as the quilting. |
very very nice
What a beautiful table runner! I love your bias binding! Your students will be so fortunate to have you as a teacher.
That is beautiful, love your choice of colors:thumbup:
Wow beautiful! I love sparkle and that gold sure does the trick!
OMG!!! How absolutely stunning that runner is. My machine does twin needles, but I have no idea how to do it or anything. Was it hard to do? You could write a book about this method. I'd buy it!!!! It's so gorgeous. I'm wishing I lived by you so I could take that class. Where can I get the pattern? Is it in a book? Who wrote it?

I have both the pumpkin and pointsettia runners almost finished. They do look stunning. I will try to post pictures later.
Thimblebug - my double needle does not cause a serged look on the back. Just looks like double line of straight quilting. Do you use two threads? I think if you use one thread and take it through both needles, that may cause the serged look. Try separate threads for each needle. See if that works. |
Beautiful - wishing for fall!
Outstanding job, love it.
Georgeous - love the colors, the pattern and the whole concept. Is this your own pattern or a purchased one?
Great job-------------beautiful design
That is so beautiful. Sure wish you lived a little closer!

Thank you so much for your all your compliments, makes me feel great! The pattern is by Brenda Henning from her
book Indian Summer by Bear Paw Productions. The use of the twin needle does make a pattern on the reverse side which looks a little like serging. I have used the twin needle more and more for topstitching. The only thing you need to watch using it on this project is the width so that the width of the two lines of stitching suits the width of the bias tape. My class is in Glendale, Arizona, on the west side of Phoenix. Thanks for asking, all of you, you flatter me! |
The reason for the surged look on the back is you have only one bobbin, and both needle threads have to interact with the one bobbin thread. There is no way you won't get that sort of thread cross over look on the back. There is no way possible to sew with one thread going through both needles. The reason for twin needles is so that you see two lines of stitching on the front. I did some top-stitching with a double needle with a zit-zag stitch, and it was beautiful. I used Number 22 on the Bernina. You can't just sew with the width that is normal for that stitch. You have to put your needle down with your hand on the fly wheel until you get the width just right, or the needles will be too wide for the space in the throat plate. If you try that, be real careful.

Absolutely gorgeous - I googled Brenda's website and was amazed at both the information and the products she has to offer. Good luck with your teaching - it looks like a worthwhile path. :-)
