Can't get easier than a Rail Fence pattern.

Just FYI - the measurements of one rail in a two rail block is L=2xW FINISHED.
So FINISHED 2"x4" or 1.5" x 3" rails (which translates into cutting measurements of 2.5"x4.5" or 2"x3.5" UNFINISHED).
Two rails together create square blocks that are UNFINSHED at 4.5" or 3.5", FINISHED at 4" or 3").

And if you have some smaller scraps that are the same value and want to get rid of them as well, you can certainly sew them together to make one rail.

There are a lot of lessons in that picture you linked to - you can see some sections where the zig-zag is very prominent, and others where ....not so much.....where there's the mush..... because the contrast between the two is so low.

Even though there are darks and lights within each group, it still works.

I have only once worked from a pattern for a full quilt, but it did turn out beautifully. Maybe I should try again.

Wonky Rail Fence - also a great choice - adds a bit more movement to the quilt, I think.
But for that rendition you obviously need more of each fabric.
Since you're busting stash, not using scraps, it should work for you.

Looking at the picture, those larger 9 patch blocks could be anywhere from 9" to 12" FINISHED , so the smaller
Rail Fence units would be around 3" or 4" FINISHED.
Just pick the number of blocks you want - or the size of the quilt - and figure out the other number.

And again, there's contrast in every block, so the darker fabrics create the overall zig-zag.
Actually, with that coloring and only two rails, you could probably use any Log Cabin layout - Barn Raising (as pictured), Streaks of Lightening, Sunshine/Shadows, etc.

I did a (3) Rail Fence quilt years ago, it wasn't a stash buster or using scraps (even though there were small pieces used), and it did have an overall background fabric, but it was fabulous lesson in value, and it remains one of my most favorite quilts ever.

I like a scrappy DNP w/o sashings or anything between blocks. Just sew the blocks together. :)

Lots of great advice. Don't forget the log cabin. Sort the lights and darks as suggested. This one is made with 3/4" wide pieces; but totally scrappy except for the borders. Any size width of strip will work. Now to quilt and finish[ATTACH=CONFIG]390357[/ATTACH]

When I feel like making a SB quilt I find an appropriate pattern and see what the requirements are for the background.
I look through my stash to find any fabric in the required ammount and build the quilt around it. I don't usually follow color schemes in patterns. I make what I have work for me.

Who says you have to use black or white!
