There was a sale and I bought 10 yrds of about 5 or 6 different fabrics. Nothing really I would use as backing, would you suggest cutting it into fat quarters or by the yard. Its been washed just not ironed yet, that is like fighting a monkey in the bath.

I would cut it into yard cuts if you are sure you aren't going to use it for backing. It will be easier to iron and fold. And the pile will be bigger! It seems like I have more fabric.

I would keep it the way it is. You never know what you will need it for.

Agree - Don't cut it! You might end up wanting to fussy cut part of it, or need just that tad bit more than you cut it ... at least that's what would happen to me! :lol:

I agree with the rest. Leave it as is. Just fold it nicely, never mind the ironing. You never know....you just might come across something where you just might use it as a backing

I love 2.5" strips. I have a zillion or so patterns (well, 30) for 2.5" strips so I'm getting ready to turn my stash into strips.

So maybe if you can do something like that, where you know what general shapes you need, you can cut it up

And wouldn't it be great to use some of the longer pieces for borders for a quilt... borders that you may not have to piece!?

I would leave it uncut, then if something comes up and need a yard or so, cut it then. I do this if needed, otherwise I have border fabric (3 yds or so) and backings (5 plus yards), ready when I want them.

I'm goin' with the crowd on this one...I don't cut it. I am however going to start cutting a strip from new yardage acquisitions...just a 2.5" or a 3"...then I won't need to deal with all that lovely stacked fabric (don't I wish) just to add a piece or two to a scrap project.

When I purchase larger pieces, I either write on the selvage (at the exposed cut end when folded) how many yards there are so that I don't have to remeasure later. Each time you cut a piece off correct the selvage note to indicate how much is left. I would not cut anything off untill needed. Don't worry about ironing for now - just fold nicely. :thumbup:

I like to purchase my fabric in nothing larger than a 2 yard cut, if I LOVE it I'll buy several cuts like that. It used to be that you didn't have any problems at the cutting table when you asked for 12 yds. in 2 yard cuts, but now they give you the 'stink eye' and tell you it's against policy, so, I get around it by acting like I changed my mind and wanted more of the fabric after they cut the others, I have to spend a little more time in the fabric store... but, that's not a bad thing...

I wouldn't cut it either. Just wash it and fold it the best you can. You would have to iron it again when you go to use it anyway, so you may as well wait. (When the fabrics aren't ironed, I know that I've already washed them!) If you want a long piece border or something, it will still be in one piece. You can always cut it when you find what you will be using it for!

Keep it big! Your chances of having enough when you are ready to use it are greater!

I used to use a note pinned to the larger pieces, but than I lost the info when I washed the piece. If you write in the selvage with a pen, it ususally does not wash off.

On my smaller stash pieces, I staple small sticky notes to the exposed corner. Then I store my stash pieces according to fat qtrs.; 1/2yds; 1yd; & more than 1 yard.

I applique, so I have carboard trays with smaller pieces sorted by color & laid out with about 1/2" of each piece visable. Otherwise, I would never remember what I have.

When I buy more than 4 yards of fabric I pick up one of the empty cardboards that bolts come on at my local quilt shop. When I get home, I roll my fabric onto it and then mark on the end how much I have-it is great for borders, backing, etc.

I would cut it WHEN I decided its final purpose, not sooner.

What I do when I have large cuts like that is I cut off a 1 yard piece to go into where my "regular" cuts of fabric are stored, in a cabinet in my sewing room. I keep my "back size" or extra large pieces mostly in the garage in rubbermaid tubs. Sometimes I forget what I have in the garage so having a piece of it in the sewing room helps me remember that I even have it and can use it in projects.

I had 500 yards of fabric...mostly 6-8yard pieces! I could not mess with it at all! SO-O-O my mom and I cut it into
8-fat quarters, 2-1yd pieces and 1-2 yard piece. So far I am not unhappy with my cuts! I will use pieced backings if I need to.

Cant help but wonder why it would be "AGAINST POLICY" LOL you would think, especially in this economy and the prices of good fabric" that they would be happy to be selling a large amount of fabric. Sometimes I wonder about businesses...I remember when the policy was "The customer is always right"...guess I am showing my age.

I never cut fabric that I have on hand because it's too pretty so I just have to go out and buy what I need for a project. But seriously, I've gotten "cutter's remorse" when I do jump the gun and cut into large pieces. Sure as anything, as soon as those last threads are snipped and it falls onto the table in two pieces, the longest one will always be 1/2 inch too short. Have the pattern in hand and measure twice before you start whacking away. (Think of backings, one-block wonders, long vertical borders, etc.)

I wouldn't cut it until I know what I'm doing with it. Just my 2 cents worth.
