I have seen so many beautiful quilts posted on the board, and many of the people say they pulled all the fabric from their stash. What sizes/quantites of fabrics do you keep in your stash? Thanks

I have all sizes from scraps to multiple yardage.

3 rooms full :)All but one room is all cotton! The other has a mix but this is rather outrageous.

I have all sizes of fabrics too, as I make quilt tops for family, friends and donations also so a lot of scrap quilts

My storage space is limited to two kitchen-sized cupboards so I buy in small amounts rather than yardages. I only buy large yardage amounts if it's for a specific project, usually for the borders or backing. Although they're more expensive than off the bolt, I tend to buy fat quarters so that I can have lots of variety but still not overflow my space limitations. And I keep a small box for scraps so I can use them for scrappy things or applique pieces.

I like to keep my stash well organized and dont keep a large supply ahead. AS I choose a project,i decide what will work from my stash. I like to make scrappy quilts and baltimore album quilts mostly.My guild supplies material for charity quilts also... pab

4 Base cabinets, 4 wall upper cabinets, a double wardrobe, and what doesn't fit in there lives on the counter or in bags on the floor. lol

If I find a fabric I really really like I try to purchase atleast 3 yds. It just seems like you can make any type of pattern if you have atleast 3 yds of each fabric. Sometimes I have to take swatches with me to find other fabrics to match, and sometimes I can match new fabrics with fabrics in my stash.

I have waaaay too much fabric, in all yardages. If I liked it, I bought the rest of the bolt when the price was right. For variety, I buy FQ on sale. I used to buy 3 yards when I was purchasing fabric just because I liked it and didn't actually have a project in mind. I have slowed down on shopping, I don't know where to put it!!!!! I should be able to sew "free" quilts for several years! I have joined a "scrappy quilt" group to actually use my stash.

It took an entire weekend to organize my stash and I'm glad I did it. Now when I do a project I can easily find what I'm looking for and know whether I really do need to buy more fabric or if I have enough. I have mine organized by color . I also have my fat quarters organized by color and in those clear plastic shoe box totes.
I have a special place for anything under a yard and I have all my asian fabrics separated and on one shelf ( they are my favorites). I make it a point to keep it organized now and I love it !! Soooo much easier.

Mine is much smaller than most, but I can work on projects for many moons with out a trip to the LQS. I built my stash slowly and without full price fabrics.

I have a lrge stash and had the nerve to go out and buy more today. I am so addicted to fabric. I need treatment. Actually maybe I should get a job as a buyer. I just love fabric. I was buying fabric for borders today so I was generally buying between 2 and 3 yards. I also am buying now becasue I have told myself that the buying stops come January. I will be using my stash then and only buying what is necessary to finish a project. I pray I can accomplish this.

Well I try and buy for a quilt/project in mind. But, there are certain fabics that call out to me so my quilt stash has to be very organized. Hubby bought me stackable units that fit into my closet in the sewing room. They are white cubes from Lowes I think called closet maid. There are fabric drawers that fit each square the keeps them dust free. (I live in the country)
But, I have good reason to stash away fabrics. We get snowstorms in the winter that I would never drive in. So on those days I get to sew, there it is! Everything I need.

To answer your question about how much to buy. If it is a blender that is a color I use all the time,I buy a large quantity. If it is a print that I think will go into maybe one project, one or two yards. (Depending on the project I have in mind.) If it is for something specific I buy the amount given for it plus enough to re-cut for mistakes. (a quarter yard or so extra)

My stash is relatively small compared to many others but I have mostly 1 and 2 yard cuts plus scraps. I have 3 large rubber maid containers my fabric is in. My Christmas fabrics are in 1 and the other 2 are an organized mess :)

My stash isn't really that big. Stash is something that grows and grows. Kind of stuff that is leftovers, and just random fabrics that call to you. You can never have too much stuff!!

My stah is not as large as most on the board I would guess. I have two large Rubbermaid totes almost full of fabric. I also have a floor to ceiling unit with multiple shelves that is2/3 full. I usually buy at least 2 yards if I find a random fabric that appeals to me that I have no concrete plans for. I also love to pick up fat quarters, especially of batiks. Other than that I usually buy about 1/2 yard more than what is called for in a pattern to give a margin for error and a bit left over to "stash". Good luck with yours!!

Way too much. I have it in the attic, under my bed, under a dresser, in a closet with shelves, in baskets in sewing room, in shelves in DH office and bolts on the ironing board. There is no way I could organize all of it. I love to pick up remnants at Hobby Lobby, if buying yardage I buy at least 2 yds.but sometimes the whole bolt.

Can I come and live at your house? :-P

My stash is crazy big, but then I "inherited" my mom's stash just last summer and a friend who sews for her daughter sends me bags full. Still, I've done a great job of building it on my own. I buy fat quarters for variety, larger pieces of blenders and solids, 3 yd cuts (or so) of focus fabrics that I love, and anything that's on sale!

i only buy things on sale for cheap. i think i have about 60 meters in my stash. maybe more.

When I see a fabric I really like I have learned to buy 3 yards. I used to buy 2, but there were too many times that it was not enough. I have leftovers from eight years of quilting, fat quarters that I just had to have, or else just liked them, and cuts in 1 and 2 yards. I keep mine on shelving in one-half of a bedroom closet. Just a few months ago I went through my stash and actually gave about 1/3 of it to Goodwill. I cut back on buying this year, and actually plan to do the same next year, with the goal of finally using up most of my stash. Scrappy quilts are my favorite anyway, so I'm doing fine so far with being able to use what I have without buying more.

I buy a lot of fabrics in multiple yardages since I usually don't know how I'll use it when I buy it.

I'm new to quilting and my stash fills 12 3-draw containers in mostly 1/2 and 1 yard pieces and a dresser full of scraps

As much as I can afford :D I am building up mine here and there, as I find good sales :D:D:D

I have everything from small scraps (smaller than FQ) sorted by color in clear stacking plastic bins, FQ's sorted by color in hanging shoe organizers in a closet, pieces between a FQ and 1-2 yards by color in hanging sweater organizers in the closet, and larger than 3 yards folded (or still on bolts) on plastic coated wire shelving. I have rolls of batting on the top shelves of the shelving, and a a few jumbo zip lock bags with scraps of batting. I do alot of applique, so I never throw a piece larger than about 1 1/2" sq away. I also have my Xmas fabrics and child's prints and Asian prints separated. I LOVE fabric-and LOTS of it-and can't seem to stop buying it. Problem is, I can't resist a good sale-I rarely buy anything less than 50% off. I'm in no hurry! I think my stash is as much a sense of pride for me as any of my quilts! Regarding quantity, I usually buy a yard or two if it is a blender or speciality fabric (like Xmas etc). If it is a really nice print that would do for borders, I buy 3-4 yards, and if it is toward the end of the bolt, I just buy the lot. I found too often I would only get 2 or 3 yards of one and what to use it for a quilt that needed 4 yards! I am still using pieces of fabric I have used in several previous quilts-nothing goes to waste!

It doesn't take all that much to be able to pull enough out of your stash to make a quilt. I pulled 10 pink, 10 yellow and 10 orange fat quarters, and a 2 yard cut for the main border and a 2 yard cut for the narrow inner border and the binding out of my stash. That'll make a queen size quilt.

The real trick to being able to pull all the fabrics from your stash for a quilt is the way you buy the fabric.

i usually buy what I like, love and cant live with out.. I have a designated sewing room- 3 walls and a walk in closet full of fabric.. I could quilt for years without buying fabric, but I would never want to, Im way too addicted to fabric and I always feel the need for new stuff..

I always buy at least two yards of any fabric unless buying in a family that has large numbers..I have one collection(family) that has 17 colors. I have a blue roseon white background collection of 2 yards each...probably 20 different fabrics...my stash encompasses a 12 foot double closet...floor to ceiling in drawers and shelves. Also, in boxes and containers under the binding and quilting machine. I could quilt for a few years without buying anything except a few companion fabrics....LOL yeah right if I could only do that I wouldnt have a stash

All sizes, store by colour using Ikea storage box`s that pull out on runners.

I've never set foot in a fabric store. Most of my stash consists of other peoples scraps. I did recently buy some FQ's on ebay for a baby quilt I made. I occasionally find yardage in my local thrift store but most of my "bolts" are actually sheets that I find there as well. I'm too cheap to spend much money on this hobby. I'm all about making something from nothing.

i keep what ever is left over from any projects. if it is 'fold-able' it goes on the shelves if it is too small to fold i have baskets for different 'scraps'. unless it is a frayed edge less than 1/2" wide i keep it

I see myself in so many of the above comments. I told myself that when I retire, I will work only from my stash. That was a couple of years ago and my stash is growing not getting smaller. I have some large pieces 3yds and as small as a bin of fat quarters. I really shouldn't buy another yard, but that spoils the fun of quilt shop hopping. Not only do I have a stash of fabrics but one of patterns too. I keep them in a binder with clear plastic sleeves.. But still manage to misplace one every now and then.

I have alot...lol, but it will all get used eventually. I have many bins full. I used to have it all sorted out in the bins, but as my stash grew, I became more unorganized. If I see something that stands out and I like it, I buy it, and usually atleast 3 yards of it. Even if I don't have much that matches it, blenders and tonals will always work with it.
