I read about a stash, but really how much is a stash? Do you have a style to building your stash?
|
Style? :) not really.. I didnt have a plan to get a "stash" but I turned into a fabric addict and just buy it cuz I like it! I have so much that I just look at cuz it is too pretty to cut up! I am going to have to stop buying and start using or I won't have any more room for it!
How much? It can be a little; shoebox? or totes full. (I have both; lots of shoe boxes and lots of totes. |
As I quilt, my stash slowly builds from each new project. I also will pick up a few yards of to die for fabric when I see it. I don't have a huge stash.
I think a "stash" is anything beyond what you are currently using in a project. |
OOOOh thats pretty! Thats how i build.
|
I buy what I need for a project and the leftovers get added to the stash. I also sometimes buy small amounts of fabrics that I really love. I like to do scrappies, so odds are good that what I've bought will get worked into something somehow! :)
|
I have to admit...I am a quilt hoarder...I love fat quarters, 10" squares, charms, and even the 2 1/2" strips...I really started buying more of the precuts when I found out about connectingthreads.com...they have amazing prices, great service, and the fabric is very good quality...I just always think, oooh...that will make a pretty _______.....I also have inherited a lot of fabrics...so, I do have quite a stash...

    Add in a couple of shops that close and have really good sales and Viola! You have a stash of hundreds of yards of fabric (or maybe thousands) |
I think a stash is when you run out of space and dont have anywhere else to put any more..so you have to start using up what you have, so then you can get more...and that is where I am right now..........
|
A stash is, I think, anything from one fat quarter or less, all the way up to semi-loads of fabric.
After all, everyone has to start someplace! |

I was hoping I would be able to buy more fabric by the end of this month. Well son is back. His wife had a truck she was paying for but it was my DH name to help them get a better payment. And now due to medical reason, I now have the truck and payment :-( so I will have to just drool over fabric :-( :-( :-(

I keep telling myself "I have enough fabric" then there will be a great sale - good quality fabric for $1.00 a yard - who is not going to buy that???????? so another 25 or more yards gets added to the stash, but it is fun to "shop" from your own store when you get ready to do a project

fabric stashes are like collections; you don't realize you have them until you have them. You start off just buying what you like or maybe for a future project the next thing you know you have a stash. It doesn't matter how large or small; I've seen some "stashes" on this board that quilt stores would love and others keep them to a minimum for what ever reasons; cost, space, etc. We all have different styles but that doesn't mean alot our stashes aren't similar. Mine has civil war reproduction fabric, kids fabric, 1920's fabric, etc. Our stashes are what we like and hopefully we all have time to make everything we want from them.
|
I look for fabric at rummage sales, estate sales, thrift shops and sales. I did inherit many boxes of fabric from my mother. Many of my friends give me fabric, so my stash grows. I'm on a budget of $50.00 per month, so if I want something, I have to save for it.
|
When I first started quilting, I tended not to buy good quality fabric. In the 3 years since, my taste has improved and budget increased. Become much more savvy about sales/coupons etc so I buy when it's a good/great deal and I love the fabric. Currently have an armoire full and several tubs of spillover. Wish my room was larger!
|
If I find a fabric I like, I will buy extra. An extra half yard can really build up your stash.
|
My favorite type of quilt is a scrap quilt with as many different fabrics as I can work into it. Several years ago, I stopped buying fabric for a particular project and started buying to "feed my stash" with fabrics I love. When a fabric speaks to me, I buy it knowing it will be used sooner or later. Right now my stash lives in containers on floor to ceiling shelves on one wall of my sewing room.

My DGD'S call my fabric storage "Granny's fabric store"

Early on in my quilting I used to think how nice it was to see all those scrappy quilts with so many different fabrics in them. I thought how expensive it must be to make one of those. Now, years later, I find it easy to make a quilt with scraps...... The quilt in my avatar was from scraps... only had to buy the black. So, it just happens, like magic!!

Well my fabric collection has taken over my linen closet, two bookcases and various underbed boxes. I think that could qualify as a stash. Never met a sale I didn't like.
I was visiting my daughter and she said, "I want to show you something". She proudly brought out a plastic container and put it in the center of the room. What could I say, Nice plastic". She said, "Mommmmm this is my stash!" So they can come in all sizes but they have one thing in common, we all love ours. |
The last time we moved - we had to GIVE sooo much stuff away to neighbors etc., because it would not fit: Anyway, I told my son::: OHHHH NO, my sewing machine and STASH goes in my car (so I can keep track of) and anything else - so be it::::for sure we r missing kitchen items, tables and I don't know what all, but my quilting items: RIGHT HERE:::

What one person calls a stash maybe something totally different for another person. I have alot of fabric but I don't necessarily think of it as a stash persay
