Are you nuts???? What if your husband found it?????

Stitchit123 01-25-2013 10:32 AM

I think my heart skipped a beat at such a horrible idea--there's a time for work but it is not during my quilting time

I thought I was the only one that didn't want to read all the blah, blah, blah on someones blog. Since there are now at least one other than me that thinks that I can feel I'm normal. HA

At least our "interest" in our stash is not taxable like interest on our savings accounts.

I totaly agree. If I had that in writing it would be more fuel for the fire for DH. He loves my quilting but does not want to know how much it costs nor do I want to know how much he spends on his gun collection or the tools in our two shops.

butterflies5518 01-25-2013 04:16 PM

The BF and I had this discussion last night. We talked about a 'fabric budget' since I don't want to outgrow my sewing room and too much mess drives me right out the door. He response was to add up how much I spent last year and average it to a monthly amount - has he lost his mind? - tell him how much was really spent?? I just muttered 'you really don't want to know...' and left the room before he could ask more.

Well, I don't consider those to be "quilting" blogs, those are personal blogs. There are a few excellent quilting blogs out there, most of them are by people who are employed in the quilting industry.

Peckish, thanks for posting those links. I love the jingle block I found on the first one.

So true about the word 'wicked', but I don't hear it much anymore. It is fitting for so many situations, though, isn't it?

Oh, I know, isn't that one gorgeous?!?!?! She does a BOM every year, and has lots of tutorials and how-to's for applique.

cathyvv 01-25-2013 06:23 PM

Next thing you know someone will expect me to balance my checkbook. No statement of stash flow for me, thanks. I'm in this strictly for the fun of it.

IrishNY 01-25-2013 06:32 PM

Must admit I love the play on words you discovered. I don't plan to calculate my stash flows but I can tell you categorically that I am in a deficit position and see no change on the horizon. lol

Minmom3 01-25-2013 07:15 PM

I worked at House of Fabrics for a while. DH came to me after figuring out our taxes, and let me know that my time there was a net loss to the family, as I had spent $3000 more than I had earned that year... That was back in the early 90's, so I shudder to think what damage I could do now!

cindit 01-25-2013 07:54 PM

I'm a CPA and I keep my black and white life separate from my color life of quilting. I enjoy the disparity. But someday I'll retire and be all color!

sewplease 01-25-2013 08:19 PM

[QUOTE=grann of 6;5811893]The closest I come to keeping track of my in-flow and out-flow is when I see an empty spot on the shelves, I know it is time to go shopping to fill it up again./QUOTE]

That's the spirit! I needed a laugh tonight...very funny! :-)

Treegal 01-26-2013 04:26 AM

I agree with everyone, this is my joy and my release. However, i just received two quilts back from the LAQ'er and was remembering my dear aunt who, when away from home had her house burglarized. They took the quilts- irreplaceable ~! Money does not cover the time, love, care and memories i have in them, but i have heard that you should make a list for insurance purposes, at the least to help prove such a loss. So, i made a list on the back of the bill from the LAQ'er. New fabric for my queen quilts in the patterns i love average about so much, batting on sale $$, backing... the cost of the quilting and something to count for the time i spend piecing and binding. It is not nearly market value, but this info along with photos helps me show what i have done.

ghquilter53 01-26-2013 04:59 AM

I kind of like this idea. Getting a total of what I have right now would be a daunting task but my husband and I are in the process of downsizing and moving across country so this would be the best time.

....and most of these quilter blogs are advertisements for their website where they are selling patterns, fab, etc. So they are like ads on the radio/tv.....maybe a free pattern thrown in to make it more inticing. Speaking of radio has anyone listened to the radio program on Mondays? I always forget...is there a site to listen to the "old" ones, like on regular radio when talk shows can't get any live person to work that shift, they play "best of"

Sorry, I agree with Erstan on this one. I work in accounting and I do NOT take it into my sewing room!!

Caryl 01-26-2013 07:02 AM

I had a crafty hobby, my DH thought it should be run as a business...3 years later I quit! Fun was gone when a balance sheet need to be made and taxes paid. Now I quilt and do it because I love it and love creating with fabrics and the joy on the face that receives my gift.

eparys 01-26-2013 07:22 AM

I have laughed and laughed at this thread this morning. I do not want to be accountable for any of my stash accumulation nor will I do a spread sheet or flow chart- lol. The "deposits" always out weight the "withdrawals". Matter of fact - the DH, who may I add completely supports my habit and is as I speak is making a 12x12 foot closet just off my sewing room in the garage attic, always encourages me to stop at LQS's we find!!

Minmom - I SO know what you are saying. I worked at a Viking insides a JoAnnes Fabric for about two years. I worked only part time and spent more than my salary at either the JoAnnes or st the Viking shop!!

Pecksh - I too loved the links to the blogs. I already downloaded The Jingle Applique block!! Thanks!!

Bataplai 01-26-2013 07:30 AM

Love the idea of it, but there is no way I would do it. Right now when DH asks how much I spend on my hobby I can honestly say 'a little here, a little there'. Gosh I don't want the actual number. Plus, if I knew exactly how much I'd have to stop shopping. lol

mtngrl 01-26-2013 07:32 AM

I remember seeing that a while back. I kept thinking " how can she afford to buy so much fabric, and how does she use it that fast?" I like slow projects. I've been depleting my stash for 5 years. I'm down to mostly 1/4-1/2 yard pieces which are great for applique-my passion.

quiltsRfun 01-26-2013 07:50 AM

Not for me. I'd rather spend my time sewing (or acquiring more stash-LOL) than keeping detailed records of ins and outs. The only lists I keep are of proposed and completed projects and that works fine for me.

Grace MooreLinker 01-26-2013 08:35 AM

Only if it was a business.

Corky 01-26-2013 08:53 AM

AMEN to that!

Speaking of accountability!! I teach an 8th grade Home & Careers class which includes sewing by hand and by machine. The Assistant Principal in my building has now advised me that "all pins need to be accounted for after each class." LMAO Wondering how many of you are able to account for all your pins, every day, after every sewing project, etc?

Liese,
After every class, I would trot myself down to the Assistant Principal's office so he or she can count them and account for them! Sheesh....

This cracked me up! I teach in a middle school, too, and sadly can just imagine an administrator saying something like this. Laura

Peckish 01-27-2013 02:27 AM

Um. Yeah. That ain't happening! Rofl!

This one made me laugh right out loud -- today's education system has completely lost its mind.
But, yes, I do account for my pins.....when I hear them clinking as they slide up the vacuum cleaner tube, or when my rolling chair rocks crazily when stopped by one on the floor, or when my bare foot tries to pick one up, or when I realize the pincushion is empty and I need to crawl around and find some 'down there.'

Shoot, guys, I don't account for my eating, sleeping, playing, reading, even checking account.....why on earth would I account for my quilting?! I'm single and retired, that's all that counts!

If I put this on paper, my husband might find the paper and then the world would come to an end! Let's just leave it to his imagination.

lots2do 01-27-2013 10:34 AM

Maybe some of the pins are finding their way into other classrooms and damaging something..just thinking that might be the issue here. Not sure how you'd stop that, though, metal detector at the classroom door?

Scissor Queen 01-27-2013 11:15 AM

If you look at stash like a savings account, then in is good!! Yeah, yeah, that's it.

Blinkokr 01-27-2013 05:30 PM

I will not take any responsibility for my fabric habit. LOL
Have a Blessed night

Apparently my AP is concerned about safety issues but my class is not the only one using pins. Tech uses them also. AP says he found 2 in the hallway -- among the 375 students in 8th grade who wouldn't even take the time to pick up a pencil if they needed something to write with -- do you think they're going to bother to pick up a pin or two? So I had to bite my tongue while I was thinking, "do you want me to pick up pins or do you want me to teach?" -- and that was after they increased my work load by an additional 50 students per quarter due to a retirement in my department!!!

MadQuilter 01-28-2013 12:49 PM

I would probably need a 5" 3-ring binder for the fabric in. Fabric out could be contained on a large post-it. lol

Nope, I don't want to account for my transactions in fabric. I buy what I want, when I want (and can afford) and I sew when I want, what I want. I already know that I will not live long enough to use my stash.
