How can I prevent static around my new machine of which the body is made of plastic, my threads go flying everywhere and do not stay behind the machine? Everything sticks to it! I have not yet got my head around leaders and enders but I guess this is one way of stopping it! It is only when I sew polyester fabrics using poly thread or man made fabrics, cotton and cotton thread is OK. It is driving me nuts! Does anyone else have this problem? My old machine was made of metal, never had any problems at all!

Many thanks Craftybear, oh dear, this may be more serious than I thought, I have not seen any of the fabric sheets you mention here in New Zealand but I shall check out the super market more closely next visit, I am going to get hubby to look into all the techno stuff for me, we do get surges here and complete blackouts due to high winds and ice and snow at certain times of the year, better to be protected in the correct way!

You can use the Bounce fabric softener sheets (or those kind) that have already been used in the dryer. Works great for TV's.

I haven't consider static in relation to my sewing machine. I know about it with my computer but hadn't thought about it with my machine. I sew in a room that has a 50 gallon aquarium. I would suppose that is the reason I haven't had a problem with static. Thank you for this post and the extra information relating to the electronics on the machine. I find it useful. /Regards, Dorothy

thanks so much for this link. I save used dryer sheets to use in art crafts but never thought about some of the uses listed on the site. Now I can save even more of them and actually use them.

I wonder if a rubber mat under the machine would make a difference?

Can you buy Static Guard in NZ? Here it is usually in the laundry aisle. It is a great product.

I never thought of using the fabric softener sheets. What a great idea.

Oatw13 Yes I am going to check out what is available in the super market tomorrow, MQ, I have already a rubber mat under my machine, I thought that would help too!

Isn't there also a liquid that is sold for the purpose of
"fixing" the thread? I remember being told that you could run a small line of the liquid down the spool of thread (crossing all threads on the spool) and it helped keep static down and the thread moving more smoothly. I may be imagining the whole thing. Does anybody remember something like this?

annette1952 07-04-2010 09:18 PM

I would wipe it down with a fabric softener sheet

BellaBoo 07-04-2010 09:23 PM

I spray Static Guard in my hair brush too! Also in the kids knit hats. Works like magic!

Gal 07-04-2010 09:55 PM

ktbb have not heard of the 'fixing thread', interesting, this board has a wealth of knowledge, you folk are great!

It's called Sewer's Aid. I use put a couple of drop on all my thread spools . AND, it's better (and much cheaper) then the defrizz hair serum for your hair. One drop is all it takes to make your hair shine and defrizz. It's pure silicone.

Is it designed for machine sewing, like, it would not damage your machine would it, I would hate to that, it is a brand new machine!
