Another thread made me wonder if anyone else has as much fun as I do in my busy bag to go.
The no frills one; a ziplock bag, thread, prepped fabric, and scissors. Been there done it a lot. Next step up, a plastic carton from the veggie or bakery section. Snap tight, work great. But we are getting ready for retirement and I expect to be on the road a lot. So I upsized my carry box to this cute Singer one. Inside fits everything I need, including my 'toid tin for tools. Currently I'm making little houses that will finish at three inches. Currently in cheddars, I love orange this year. the last photo is the houses I'm working on at the machine, these also will finish at three inches. What do you use for your mini quilt room? What project do you have in it for pick up and go? |
I noticed the most important- Werthers Original.

For a while I was into buying Longabeger baskets, won't tell you how many I have, but lets just say there are a lot. For about 2 years they came out with picnic baskets and pie baskets and purses with lids - all which I looked as and said, "Those will make wonderful sewing baskets" and would buy them. After the fourth one, I decided maybe I had enough. They had what they called "a small purse" which makes an excellent small sewing basket for my daughters that don't sew but may need to sew on a button sometime.
But if we are going somewhere and I know that I will want to sew by hand - I have a basket already to go. Currently there are hexagons for GFG, another one has diamonds for the tumbling block I Spy quilt I have been sewing on for years and a pre-printed alphabet embroidery quilt for the times I don't feel like either of the other two. Mine are not as neat as yours. Once a bellboy was loading onto a cart with the rest of the luggage and I told him I had to carry it, if he dropped it I would have to do something horrible to him. Of course I said it with a smile, but meant every word. |

I don't currently have a sewing take a-long project but when I do I use the plastic container from baby wipes. My take a-long right now is my crochet bag. I am working on a baby blanket.

I love the mini sewing room name for a go bag. :) I am into making hexies so I keep all my hex supplies in what else but a big pretty hexagon box. I never pass up an odd shape pretty box. I have different sizes of hexies in separate size zipper pouches each with needles, scissors, thread, and thimble. I can grab a bag from the box and go. Also the little red leather box on the table is perfect to hold all I need to make a dozen hexies that slips right in my purse.

Your little travel box is too darn cute. I will have to see what I can come up with now. I have a little old picnic basket that I got at a yard sale some years ago and it would be perfect for a traveling sewing room. What a great idea.:D
The house blocks are just fabulous. Please, please, please show us when you get it done! peace EDIT: I didn't see the hexy box when I posted and want to say that is another cute idea. |
Nope. If if doesn't fit in my pocket, I usually don't bother with it unless it's my bridge camera or DSLR.

I have several. A small fabric cooler (6 pack) for smaller projects. An old brief case that works for larger projects.it can carry a small cutting board and 6x12 ruler Since we're going to be moving in the next couple months, I've put a lot of my tools into a tool box that also holds my to go projects. I just open it up and grab what I need. It is clear tool box with different pockets so I can see where everything is. I also have a large make up bag for some of my embroidery projects. Pencil pockets for school binders are great for scissors and such since you can see through them. If you have old plastic glass cases those are good for pocket projects. Just today I saw a gal who does yarnwork and she has her yarn in large peanut butter (plastic)jars. She puts a hole in the lid and pulls her yarn thru it. Just something for those who do yarn work.

CUTE !! I did all my traveling in my 20s, Since I don't drive anymore, I don't get around much any more. Have fun !!
|
Nothing fancy here. A baby wipe container for the hexagons I'm making for a table topper and a plastic bag for the yoyo supplies.
|
I carry charms and a yo-yo maker, thread, needle and scissors in a small plastic pencil type case. I only need to make 500 or so yo-yo's...lol.
|
I purchased a new pet carrier (cardboard box type) from a rescue shelter for my travel box. Then I covered it with contact paper and reinforced the handles. I have the same shaped box in a smaller size that was sold as a temp cooler. It holds my colored pencil collection Best $3.00 (each) I ever spent. My current quilt magazines are housed in a large laundry detergent box covered with the same contact paper.
I always try to figure out a use for any type container that I empty. Some pillow cases or napkins came in those clear zipper bags. I use those for my notions bags. My binder clips are in international coffee plastic boxes. Old eye glasses cases work great for protecting scissors and a hard case holds my sewing machine needles. |
I loooove the little houses! (and the Worther's O.) Sadly, I don't know if I'd have the patience to do that kind of hand piecing any more. Post when you have it finished, please. I just use the zip locks except when I'm taking a class. Then I need larger pieces of fabric, mats, cutters, etc. I keep cloth tote bags I save from quilt shows, craft shows and such. Before stuff got so expensive dealers used to put your purchases in them. Now I have a to-go bag for classes, too. Admittedly, don't often take a class anymore unless I want to learn a new technique, try a complex pattern, or just socialize.

I like to scout out old tins & baskets at yard sales to use. I recently found a tin box with handles that came in real handy for transporting my hand work.
Love your houses. |
I have a tiny and I mean tiny wicker picnic basket that I keep my stuff I need for when I'm sewing bindings. Has needles thread nippers, clover clips needle puller, and thimble. All there just waiting for me to grab it and sit watching tv while I finish a quilt.
|
The Swiffer containers with clear lids are good too and you can see at a glance what you have in them.
|
Well, mine certainly doesn't look like yours but I do have supplies to go for yo yos. Your have inspired me!
|
My take along is knitting or crocheting. All I need is a bag, my needles or hook, yarn and mini scissors. Granny squares make great carry along projects and knitted hats are also easy to take.
|
I haven't consolidated that much yet...mine is usually in one of the cloth grocery bags. When possible I down size to a 31 keep it caddy
|
I have a little travel bag that is nothing fancy. I would love to have one like yours KalamaQuilts. Would you mind telling me where you got it at?
|
I have a container, actually a couple of them, just like yours and love them. I also have various baskets, totes of all sizes from small pencil holder size to large to extra large, plastic bags, tins etc. Love to collect, use and display all sorts of containers.
|
My easiest grab 'n go is a small blue fishing tackle box I got at the thrift store for $2. It has a good sized open area in the bottom, and two layer folding trays that fit into the lid and are partitioned to hold tools, thread, etc. They had a bigger one, which I also bought for $3 that was not pretty, lol, and I decoupaged it with flowers from catalogs and that is now my jewelry box. That one has 3 folding shelves in the top for earrings, bracelets, etc. In the bottom, I keep things that come in boxes rather than being loose. I store my necklaces on wooden expanding hangers so they are easy to see and don't get tangled. Plus they look pretty hanging on the wall. :)

You are all so creative.
|
My mini "mini" is a Crystal Lite container with lid. I can store my little sharp scissors, seam ripper, marker pen, thread and small items I am stitching on. It fits into the handle slot on my car door for easy access. When I start doing hexies, they will fit in there nicely too.

*** Love your mini sewing room. *** Your house are beautiful and will make a super nice quilt. *** |
My to-go sewing room is an 8x10 zippered fabric make-up travel case with dividers (zipper closed of course) and it also has a handle. I found it at Goodwill for $4. I can open it up on a flat surface or hold it on my lap. Either one is really convenient.
It is perfect for the hexies that I make when I am waiting (doctor's office, watching kids at park, etc). It has a total of 4 sections that are great for dividing my tools, fabric squares, finished hexies and those in progress. |
A Swiffers refill makes a nice "mini sewing room" also. The lid is clear and allows you to see the contents.
|
SewExtremeSeams, I was lusting after the crystal lite container last time I got groceries. Don't care for the drink so left it on the grocery shelf wishing it was somewhere else ;)
SewFlower, Kalama is small small, if I need something I go down and cruise the antique mall until I see something that will work for what I'm looking for. Lucked out on the pink singer tin, $4.00. The smaller tin is an altoid tin with the lid appliqued then embellished with buttons and beads. We deserve pretty things! Thanks all for the house comments, they are fun to make. The ones at the bottom of the photos are paper pieced. I do those when I'm sitting with my mother. The cheddar ones are from a rubber stamp set I bought here https://www.etsy.com/listing/1506029...es-from-scraps Pricy but years worth of entertainment once I bit the bullet and bought the set. You all have been really creative! I'd like to see the longaberger little baskets! I'd like to see photos of all the mini sewing rooms :) |
I have been using a craft box (looks similar to a toolbox) to carry my pincushion makings.
|
My on the go bag is usually something for crocheting. Sometimes it's cotton thread to make dishcloths and sometimes just using up scrap yarn making granny squares. I have to have something to do when I'm going to be sitting or I'll go nuts!
I don't do any hand sewing except for binding and that wouldn't be a good on the go project. |
The little house stamps are no longer available. :( They sure are cute!
|
click on the rubber stamp picture, they are still there. It is the pdf she no longer offers as a stand alone. It does come with the stamps though.
I don't think it comes with the acrylic backs any more. I had some so no problem for me. |
Thanks I ordered the set. How fun!
|
I use personal wipe containers too. I've got stacks of them (all labeled) in my sewing room. It's just ready to grab and go. I also made a little kit for needles, etc. with a hard eyeglass case. I attached a piece of magnetic tape for needles and pins. And of course the little clear vinyl snap top packages that pillowcases come in.
|
My carry all for small quilting is a school pencil box. It will hold what I need for small piecing. I also have one when I embroidery big project (like quilt tops) for all the thread. Works great with the scissors and needles and of course the thread.

I think I am going to confiscate my grandchildren's pencil box... we use it for crayons and other treasures... do you think they will miss it when they come to grandma's.... I really love mini's especially your little houses... post more photos of minis.. never get enough

I use the set for quilt classes I made for myself when I had left over scraps from a quilt I loved. Black white and turquoise. It is posted somewhere here on the board.
Here it is! http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t218696.html |
Aren't you the clever little lady. I love the cute house patches. I just finished reading the book The World of Gloria Vanderbilt, she was an amazing woman in so many ways. She had wallpapered a room with fabric of houses that looked something like yours, she designed so many patterns that she had printed in textiles, she used quilts in many of her projects.
