That is so true....no stupid question---a smart person knows to ask!

tmg 01-07-2011 06:50 AM

I agree. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

yolanda 01-07-2011 06:53 AM

I agree with all - sincere questions can't be stupid

Go for it, if it works for you, you learned something new. I don't particularly like paper piecing, find it too confining so I avoid it as much as I can. Some love it. I get all up tight when someone says, you HAVE to do it this way.

I love this site. And, I agree that all questions are useable to someone.

I now know why I have lost half of my eye brows because of this site. Who would have thought! Love it and all the questions and answers.

mhansen6 01-07-2011 07:19 AM

I agree. I have learned so much on this board by other people asking questions. Keep the questions coming.

IndyQuilter 01-07-2011 07:30 AM

When I used to teach I always quoted Ann Landers.

"Do not be afraid to ask dumb questions, they are easier to handle that dumb mistakes."

The only stupid question is the one that's not asked.

When I do teaching of any kind, I always start the class by saying: "There are no stupid questions. By asking questions, you show you are interested, paying attention, and eager to learn. Someone else may be thinking the same thing you are, so you are doing them a favor by asking." In my practice as a nurse, I always told my patients that when we stop learning we start dying. I really believe learning new things is important to our health and well being.

i do a lot of training at work, and i am NOT good at it.... i tell everyone i train " i an a lousy trainer, i've been doing this for 30 years, and it is so second nature to me, i may blow right by something not realizing i didn't make it clear. so stop me and ask anything you need to, there are no stupid questions." when you tell someone they have to ask.. they don't seem to be afraid to interrupt.

Jan I like your idea. Maybe we should all keep a little box by our computers or sewing machines and when we start to put ourselves down for something we've done, even just thinking about it, then we need to put a nickel or quarter in the box and empty it at the end of the year and see if we have enough money to buy something for our quilting hobby.
When I was teaching school, I always told my students to never be afraid to ask a question because that was the way they learned about something they didn't know. Also that just because some seemed to know didn't mean everyone else did, and there would always be those who pretended to know or acted like they did, because they were afraid they would be laughed at or something for asking. There would always be others in the class that would want to know the answer to the same question. My rule in class was always WE DON'T EVER laugh at someone asking a question. We only laugh at something funny and asking a question for knowledge and information isn't something funny.

Thoroughly agree - it is the best way to learn.

Good point, a lifetime ago a friend once said to me, "never put yourself down, there are always plenty of people quite willing to do that for you". Anyway, asking questions is a smart thing to do, how else do you learn?

What I feel bad about is asking questions that have been asked before. I'm not very good at searching, I never find what I'm looking for.

Mattee 01-09-2011 03:57 PM

I don't think you should feel badly. It can be difficult to find an answer, depending on what you're asking. Also, we are always getting new members who may have new insights.

To all wonderful quilting people, We are ALL in the learning process. I don't care how many quilts someone has made IT WAS ALL DONE IN THE LEARNING. That is the creative fun of making a quilt. Always have fun no matter how it ends up. They are all beautiful!!! LOL

My Mom was a teacher, homebound and classroom. She used to say "The only stupid question is one that is not asked."
