Mattee 01-06-2011 06:49 AM

I've just noticed that a lot of posters have been apologizing lately for asking such "simple" or "stupid" quilting questions. There's no such thing! Many of us are new, and even those who have been quilting for decades may have questions when trying a new technique or expanding his or her skills. Don't worry about it, just ask! No one is "stupid" because of his or her questions. I know that I've learned tons from reading other people's questions that I didn't even know to ask myself.

So what about it, let's stop putting ourselves down!

maryb119 01-06-2011 06:51 AM

I agree. The only way to learn something is to ask.

Cyn 01-06-2011 07:00 AM

You make a great point: Quit putting yourself down by saying this!
I agree with you but it helps to let people know that you think you should be able to do something when you feel everyone else obviously has mastered it:) I have been messing around with sewing all my life and feel i should be further along. I know I'm not stupid and neither are my questions but it's a "stupid" habit I have of prefacing every question with "I got a stupid question."

Eisgoow 01-06-2011 07:02 AM

WHAT IS quilt piercing?

susiequilt 01-06-2011 07:04 AM

Even if it's the same question asked again and again, someone usually had a new take on the answer so ask away.
We can all learn something new that we never knew we didn't know.

Mattee, you are so right! I think some people think we are a bunch of experts and I sure as heck am not :)
Questions are always welcomed and never to be sorry for!

Wouldn't life be boring if we all knew everything??? hee hee
Great post! :D

davidwent 01-06-2011 07:18 AM

<~~Guilty as charged. and will stop it immediately.
Thank you!

I taught teen girls in a Safe House to sew.
These were some of the rules
Follow safety rules (I showed them how to use a rotary cutter etc.)
No bad language allowed
There are no stupid questions
The second season I added a new one
DO NOT disassemble my sewing machine. It is to expensive to repair.

dpparris 01-06-2011 07:29 AM

I agree! I think that everyone has ways of doing the same thing, sometimes by asking question (even if you think they are silly or stupid) you can have several people answer them and find an easier way of doing something.

I always ask questions! I think all the people on this forum are willing to help with any question. LOVE this forum!

sewwhat85 01-06-2011 07:38 AM

i agree ask away

In my beginner class, a coin box sits on the table. On the side is written, "A lady never makes excuses."

A nickel or dime goes into the pot every time someone puts themself down. After the first couple of times there's lots of good-hearted teasing, reassurance, complimenting, and fewer and fewer deposits. Usually works like a charm. :-)

Sounds like we all need one and look at the fabric we can buy later. LOL

Everyone has questions, and some are asked more than once. I don't mind because there are thousands of people on here reading at different times and if we had to look back over all the posts to find an answer, then oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So ASK......The only dumb question is the one not asked. I've heard that so much. And we definitely have some great quilting minds on here to answer. Makes everyone feel needed and that's what this board is for.

Hee hee I knew the answer to that one. (LOL)

If anyone is keeping count/track of stupid questions, get in line behind me! I'm just happy to get anything done, given the lack of time. Smile everyone!! It's a big boat! :-)

LivelyLady 01-06-2011 12:26 PM

I agree! If I'm able to answer someone's question, it's only because I had previously asked the same question myself at one time or another. This is how we all learn. :D

Marge L. 01-06-2011 05:40 PM

There is no such thing as a stupid question. How will you ever get an answer if you don't ask? I know I've quilted for some time and there are so many things that I have learned since be on this board. There are times I am embarassed to ask when I feel that I should know the answer.

SO if you put someone else down, do you get to raid the box???? lol

Mariposa 01-06-2011 05:43 PM

I like Jan's idea of the coin box. Would really help us to stay positive! :)

Eisgoow 01-07-2011 01:40 AM

Really, who would of thought piercing was that

Thanks
Eisgoow

Eisgoow 01-07-2011 01:58 AM

ahhhhhhh, spelled wrong. Thank you, could not understand that. I thought had something to do with needlework on a square.

Helenq 01-07-2011 03:09 AM

The only thing that is stupid is not asking the question.

I think there may be a typo here. I think she means piecing! It took me the longest time to call piecing piecing, a block a block and a square a square. A block is square - a bunch of squares make a block. I still call it a square sometimes when I should call it a block. I sometimes think that not knowing something is better than knowing it all and in quilting you never know it all. I would really like to know the original origination of the names of blocks (or was that squares). I find that to be extremely interesting. I also like to look at a pattern and say "I can't do this" and do it and discover how easy it was to do. I love days like that. Happy Quilting! Edie

ibequilting1 01-07-2011 03:53 AM

That is what I love about this board. Everyone is so helpful and willing to share their experience.

Indeed. I love reading the questions and answers

merrylouw 01-07-2011 04:29 AM

My DH taught for many years. He's always said, the only stupid question is the one you already know the answer to! So ask away and don't worry how simple the question is -- we've all been there -- at the beginner stage.

Rachelcb80 01-07-2011 04:42 AM

I absolutely agree that there is no stupid question and beginners (and advanced quilters! :) ) should feel free to ask anything and everything.

The only thing that bothers me is when someone asks a question and they're told to use the search button. I don't mind pointing the search feature out to someone but an answer to their question in conjuction with pointing that feature out would be nice. Just directing them to the search feature kind of comes across like, "Take your questions elsewhere." Many members probably haven't been involved with a lot of forums so don't understand all the ins and outs.

marthe brault-hunt 01-07-2011 04:48 AM

Thank you to all of you asking those stupid questions, you made me learn quite a few new things. Now I feel less stupid! LOL

judikay 01-07-2011 04:53 AM

I have a "NON" stupid question, (I'm also sort of a newbie to quilting). I found a pattern that says to paper piece and was wondering if I could make templates and do the regular way??

NUTMEG10 01-07-2011 04:56 AM

Very well said. Thank you.

CarrieAnne 01-07-2011 04:58 AM

Racheal, thats true. Some people are new to forums and dont know thre IS a search. One lady pmd me, and I told her to do a search, and she asked how...so maybe just taking a minute to let them know HOW to search.

quilt3311 01-07-2011 05:08 AM

Totally agree, there is no stupid questions!!!! How do we ever learn, unless when we have a problem, we ask. I've been at this for over 40 years and still have questions. No one can ever say they know everything as there are always new ways discovered to do a task.

David

I was just going to say the same thing David. How stupid would it be to go ahead and do something(that you are not sure about) and ruin it because you didn't ask. !!

Connie Merritt 01-07-2011 06:08 AM

We are really our own worst critics. I also believe that there are times when we really feel that way and DO need some encouragement from our fellow quilters (I know I have) especially when one lives alone, is aged and just needs some conversation specifically to them. I can honestly admit to being "one of those".

Carol J. 01-07-2011 06:12 AM

Every journey starts with a single step, I don't know who said that first but it is true. We learn many things one step at a time and that goes for quilting too. We all learned by asking for help, and someday you will be asked for help too.

Me too

Para722 01-07-2011 06:31 AM

I agree. This board is so helpful and I truly feel that we should learn something new everyday. If you don't know the answer then it is not a stupid question.
