Storage Ideas for Rulers ???
Does anyone have any great storage ideas or things they already use to store rulers? My long ones that I stand up beside my table keep falling to the floor, and the little ones get lost in my storage container that holds everything else !

Here's what I did for my rulers. You can see that I use the hooks for other things too. I had considered a pegboard but in hindsight, I'm happy we did this. It cost less than $15.

I have an old wooded magazine rack that my larger rulers stand in, not pretty, but it works and doesn't take up alot of room. I don't have any wall space for them, although I am envious of Ladyjanes!
|
I sure hope for some solutions for this as well. I've used a wall mounted lid holder for some but those long ones are a pain to corral. I also use one of those slotted boards but fall over if I use some heavier ones on it.
There are some really experienced people here so surely somebody has conquered this problem. I'm happy you asked this. |
I hang mine on the wall also, although I just use small nails (brads) and pound them in wherever convenient! I have the ones I use most right over my cutting table. I also have a letter holder for the square rulers on a nearby dresser. This has worked great for me!
|
I have a peg board across one wall so my rulers hang there. Before the peg board I painted a few nails to match the wall color and hung them that way. The rulers with no holes I got rid of as the old rulers rarely had hanging holes.
|
Dh bought me a system at Ikea where you attach little horizontal bars to the wall and then put hooks on the bars. I hang all my rulers plus all sorts of things on the hooks. My couple of rows of supplies only take up the space behind the door. I am also very short on space but this works quite well.
|
I use Command hooks to hand them on the side of my fridge (I sew in the kitchen) but you can put them on a wall or the side of your sewing cabinet.
|
I put the long ones in a tall, narrow box that sets near a small chest of drawers. Not pretty, but works fairly well. The small ones are more of a challenge. I have some of them in a freezer door ice cube holder. Some of the tiny ones are in recpe card boxes/holders.
|
For rulers that don't have a hole for hanging, it's a quick and easy job to drill a hole and I've also hung binder clips from a nail or a hook and pinched the ruler in the clip. Just use a bigger clip for heavier rulers. I also have an old letter holder and it works great for the small stuff. It would probably be fine for heavier rulers if I screwed down on a heavier base. Great thread. I'm always looking for easier storage in my small space.

I have couple cup hooks screwed into the edge of a shelf and a letter holder for the smaller ones.

Gosh, what a lot of great ideas! I am going to make use of them today and get my rulers up off the floor! Thanks so much to all of you.

I have two 24" rulers that I hang, the rest are in one of those tall scrapbook paper storage files, it's about 14" wide, 16" tall and 5" deep and has hanging folders. I actually have 2 of these, one I use for rulers/templates the other holds my embroidery hoops. I know I got one at Joann's & one at a thrift storem

My DH built my fabric storage cabinet's, and used peg board for the top half of he doors. Because of cabinet's and shelving I do not have free wall space or extra counter space, I hang as much as I can. If your rulers do not have a hole you can drill one.
|
I have peg board to hang my rulers and other stuff on. Do you have a door to your sewing room? Don't over look the back of the door for hanging things with command strips or screws/nails. You can also use the dollar store skirt hangers to clamp on the top of big rulers to hang in the closet. You can also use the metal shower rings to go through the hole in the ruler and then hang the shower hook in the closet.

I have these narrow shelves that are meant for pictures. My rulers are nicely stacked on those. But I must say that it isn't as well organized as the wall hooks.
|
I have a computer desk in my sewing room for my TV and other items - the part that is meant for the keyboard I use for my rulers. They lay flat . I don't have any rulers longer than 24 inches so there is plenty of room. My small rulers/templates that are under 8 inches I keep in a drawer. I would love to hang them but don't have the wall space.

I use cup hooks
Now that I look at them in a photo, I can see they are not technically a cup hook. More like a cup hook straightened. |
I put them in an umbrella stand.

I just keep mine in a grooved piece of wood.
A larger one for the big rulers and a smaller one for the small rulers. |

I too have the grooved wood, the longer one for the longer rulers and the shorter one for the square and smaller rulers.

Let the cat help with the smaller rulers

Picked up the cat shelf at a yard sale - had DH cut slots for my smaller rulers.

I put a couple of nails on the side of my sewing table and just hang them there

I have a small sewing room, so I have a peg board right in front of my cutting table. I hang all of my rulers, so when I need one, I just reach out to get it. I inherited a wooden holder from my mom, but it took up shelf space that I did not have. I am happy with the peg board.
|
My cutting table is on top of two old bookcases so I added a couple of screws on both ends for the rulers I use the most. The longer ones are on one end and the shorter ones are on the other end. The specialty rulers I have on the pegboard right behind me where I do all my cutting so just have to turn around and grab one. Sorry no photo.

Nice ideas. I like being able to see each ruler. I had mine in a tall basket but often miss what I have already. Hubby doesn't want holes in the walls. Then I used the Command type hook, thought I pulled in straight down to change the location and pulled the paint off the wall. I tried the stack dish metal organizer, but rulers fall out.
This gives me an idea. |
I use an old file holder that I used on my desk when I worked. You could also use one of the kitchen racks for dinner plates or pot lids. Go to Ikea. I'll bet you can find something in their kitchen department.

I use command hooks on the inside of the closet door in my room. I sew in the master bedroom and took over most of the linen closet in there for quilting storage. Who needs all those sets of sheets anyway! :) I also have one of the grooved wooden racks that I use in my quilting area for the rulers I'm using on my current project.

My long ones are stored between 2 separate but close together cabinets. The small onesare in page protectors in a 3 ring binder. Page protectors are 8.5 x 11 and clear. available at Walmart and office supply stores. Diane C

I use a letter holder, on clearance at Staples for my long rulers and the smaller rulers that I use often. For the specialty rulers I use a dollar store basket. The instructions go in there, too.
|
You can get hooks for hanging things in the Dollar Store, they are blue.....not great but they hold up.....excuse the pun
|
I use one of those metal round things that has a top like a regular hanger I am pretty sure that the original use was for hanging stencils that is where I hang the long rulers the small ones I just use the slotted holder. This works well for me. BTW I also have one for the stencils.
