I need to store mine upright & out of reach of the kitties. I can't put them on the floor because the cats tend to pee on them. (yuck).
I'm worried about them getting warped. Any suggestions on keeping them straight? |
Use a clothes hanger with clips and hang it in the closet. That would help.
I keep mine under the bed... could you hang them behind the door...?
How about between two stiff pieces of card taped together on three sides so you can slide it in on the open side? I have 3' x 2' stored like that til I get my new sewing room (we're converting the attic - no room for it at the moment!)
Can you store them behind a large piece of furniture like a dresser?
I hang mine on a nail inside the pantry door.
I hang mine by a nail, also, and they stay perfectly straight!
I store mine behind the cabinet I have my quilting supplies in.
I was lucky. Mine came in a cardboard box, so I keep them in that. But I place the box along a dresser and the wall to keep it upright. I have a cat also and I thought hair balls was bad.
I have them hanging on a nail on a wall, works great for me.

this so cool - please share the directions! thanks
Ohhhhh, I want the directions too. Great idea.
What is pet screen?
I put the smaller ones in a pants hanger with a piece of that sticky shelf liner in between the hanger and the mats (so they don't slide out of the hanger). This is the kind of hanger that would clamp over the cuff end of a pair of pants. Then they hang in the closet. Actually, most of the time they are on my sewing table, but I can leave them out all the time. I've no pets or kids with sticky fingers around.
I bought one of my larger mats from JoAnn's. I asked them if they had the cardboard box that they received them in and they gave it to me. Lucky for me the shipment had arrived the day before so they still had it. I always slip my mat back inside the box and lean it against the wall in my closet. Works great for me!

Here is what I use to store mine. It's made out of pet screen.
If anyone is interested, I can post the directions. I got the directions from an article in a quilting magazine. Can I scan it and post it here? |
If they do not have handles, (mine does) you might see if someone could put a punch hole in them and just hang them on a hook on the wall.
I hang mine on a nail in my closet.

I'm worried about them getting warped. Any suggestions on keeping them straight? If anyone is interested, I can post the directions. I think you have a winner idea. I was on another link and the same question came up. The solution was a belt hanger. It had multiple hooks to hold the boards and rulers. Harry |

I put up a peg board that you get at Home Depot to hang tools on and got the hangers that work the best. This way I can hang different sizes on different hooks so I dont have to take all the rulers off to get to the one I want.
I also hang alot of quilting tools on it like rotary cutters and rolls of tape. I had it cut in half but now I wish I had used the whole board. You can see part of it in picture |
I thought she was asking about storing cutting boards? Lots of good ideas for the rulers.
I use c-cup hooks. I have a dog and cat and when they going running by or have just stopped to play they'll swing back and forth but not fall off! :D
Mine usually just stays on the table, but I have heavy hanger clips I bought for hanging the mat.
Yes! can you post it,I love your idea!

I have five of the biggest cutting mats. (When I find a clearance I buy) Some are all scratched and notched but still useful. I have them stacked on top of each other on my cutting table. The other sizes I use for table toppers everywhere there is a flat surface in my sewing room. I keep the largest June Taylor one in the trunk of my car. It makes a nice trunk floor liner.
I store my largest cutting board under my bed and others are behind my dresser.
I have a counter top in the laundry a bit over 4' long and is open beneath. Hubby made a sliding drawer attached to the counter and the rulers of all sizes lay perfectly flat when not in use.
Works great for me. BellaBoo..........be careful not to have your car in bright sun and have the truck get very hot.....I lost a good mat leaving it in the car...... mj |
I have some very strong magnets and I keep mine on the sides of my clothes dryer, washing machine and even the fridg. if needed.I dont have a pet so I can keep mine flat under the bed etc. Of course everyone knows they enter my house at thier own peril as I piece and make quilts all the time. lol Jolo

Great idea for the rulers! I've learned to NOT store my mats on the end...like setting them against the wall. They bend and take forever to straighten out. I hang mine on a nail on the wall...............not inventive, but workable!

Sounds like you need to do some kittie training :?
I store my cutting mat when not on the table hanging from a skirt hanger. Never had a problem with it warping.
