Finally got the top together, just have to decide on the borders. It measures 65 X 76, it needs to measure at least 84 x 90 after quilting & binding. Now my questions are, 1. How much extra width & length do I need to figure in for quilting (the quilting makes it shrink up a bit doesn't it?) 2. I was thinking 3 borders, a narrow green border, a purple border and a light blue border. But in what order? I have attached pictures of 2 blue fabrics I have, but will need to buy another purple & a green.

Love the optical illusion of curved piecing

Beautiful quilt.

gunny148 06-05-2011 08:11 AM

Either one is great, me i like the second one, the shells and the color

feline fanatic 06-05-2011 08:14 AM

Your SAS came out great! I too love that optical illusion of curved piecing that forms with this pattern and SAS is definitely in my que. For borders, I would try audtioning your darkest color as a narrow inner border. I think a very dark narrow inner border will make your peicing pop. The other two borders you can lay out and decide. I really like that seashell fabric.

yummy colors

The same for me.

hobo2000 06-05-2011 03:45 PM

a 3" white border all the way around will make your piecing seem to "float" and looks so pretty. Then a narrow green or lt. blue and finish with the dark blue and bind in the dark blue. You did a wonderful job.

Cyn 06-05-2011 03:45 PM

Beautiful!

SweetSlumber 06-05-2011 04:13 PM

beautiful quilt! SAS is one of my faves, on my to-do list.

tjradj 06-05-2011 05:30 PM

Gorgeous quilt! One of the patterns on my "must do" list.
I'd go with a dark blue thin border to set off the center. Then a medium light blue border. Do you have enough to do a border in your sashing pattern? That between two dark thin borders would be lovely.

Dina 06-05-2011 05:35 PM

Beautiful!

DesiG 06-05-2011 06:03 PM

that is really beautiful... and I love your blue fabric! any of the borders would look great, but I like the idea of the white border to make the blocks look like they are floating

beckalou 06-05-2011 06:20 PM

What shows up here as dark blue is actually a dark purple. I only have 1/2 yd of that left, but did see that Joanns still had some of that the other day. I have 1 yd each of the blue/purple stripe and white tone on tone. I bought all of these fabrics over 7 yrs ago, should still be able to find the white. But doubtful I can find the blue/purple stripe. Thanks for all the compliments, it has been in my UFO pile for a long time.

Mariposa 06-05-2011 06:23 PM

Very pretty so far!

QuiltnLady1 06-05-2011 06:49 PM

Lovely quilt!!

I vote for a small dark blue piping (withouth cording) as close to your dark blue as possible to make the pattern pop. Number 2 looks like it is a teal that pulls out the color in the blocks, so that would be a good next border. Lastly, I would do more dark blue for the final border and binding. A good rule of thumb is to go from narrow to wide with the borders.

Carron 06-05-2011 06:52 PM

Oh my, so very pretty.

Krystyna 06-06-2011 03:10 AM

I just love that pattern. Thanks for posting. You've inspired me to do one soon!

Vat 06-06-2011 03:12 AM

I like the darker of the two.

star619 06-06-2011 03:41 AM

Storm at Sea was my first real quilt. Yours is lovely. Great piecing!

dove 06-06-2011 03:41 AM

sewmorethings 06-06-2011 05:19 AM

Beautiful, I like the 1st blue best.

RuthFru 06-06-2011 05:27 AM

Very nice. I love the pattern.

GrannieAnnie 06-06-2011 05:32 AM

This is my favorite block. I've got the fabric to do one, just have not had the nerve to jump into it.

Ooooh, you did a great job on that! Its beautiful! I think your decision will hinge on what else you add...so off to shop for you!

GramaLaura 06-06-2011 05:45 AM

Sandpat, I'm gonna hate everyminute of that! ;) Actually the first blue matches better, is my daughter's favorite color and she also loves hearts. The quilt is for her, a very late wedding gift.

Kayaker26 06-06-2011 06:19 AM

Very pretty quilt...the colors are great and the "movement" in it is fantastic. Either fabric looks good I like the lighter blue. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice!

barb55 06-06-2011 06:55 AM

Beautiful quilt. now for the borders to make the quilt the size you want with three borders. I'd make the first border 2 1/2" and the 2nd 3 1/2" and the third 3 1 /2" that would take 1 1/4 yd for 1st border 1 1/2 yd and the third border a little over 2 yd. This would make your quilt 85" x 96". I hope this is what you are asking.

Iamquilter 06-06-2011 07:20 AM

I would do as hobo2000 said. Most of the time I always end up with a dark border and binding so your eye wants to stop at the edge of the quilt. As told at a quilt class several times.

beckalou 06-06-2011 08:06 AM

Barb,it is, somewhat. But when you quilt it doesn't that draw the quilt in a bit? Like make the finished quilt smaller from edge to edge? I want the quilt to drape over the sides enough to cover about 1" of the top of the box spring on each side and the end. I have no problem figuring yardage needed. I remeasured and want the quilt to be 85 X 96 after quilted and bound.

grammysharon 06-06-2011 08:06 AM

Beautiful quilt

It well a little, so I would make one the the borders little bigger, like a inch.

caspharm 06-06-2011 08:16 AM

Very nice.

greaterexp 06-06-2011 09:25 AM

What a gorgeous quilt top!

Marilynsue 06-06-2011 09:56 AM

Why don't you just send that beautiful quilt to my house and I'll just take care of making it larger! It is absolutely beautiful and I would take very good care of it! That is one quilt I have always wanted to own, but no desire to make it. Beautiful job!

Kkimberlee 06-06-2011 10:04 AM

That is gorgoues. I like the first blue fabric. Seems to go well with the colors in the quilt blocks.

I would go with at least one white border, as you have white in the quilt. Perhaps a trip to your local quilting store will help you find that final piece. I am thinking a medium size print with all colors in it, as the final border. Some thing to tie it all together.
