Storm at Sea ruler or pattern
 

I am going to be making a storm at sea for my daughter who was in the Navy. I have seen a lot of ways to do it and wondering if anyone who has made one can suggest a ruler they liked and/or a pattern. I don't really want to do paper piecing and I was looking at the Creative Grids ruler but not sure? Thanks in advance.

Creative Grids rulers are great. Which ruler were you looking at? Storm at sea has straight cuts. It is the illusion of "curves"". It is pieced...not paper pieced, in my knowledge. Neat pattern. Did you Google for patterns?

Accuquilt has a dies if you have a cutter if not there is the Tri Rec rulers. I have both but will be using the Tri Rec rulers when I finally get around to this pattern; which is close :-) You can paper piece it but that is not my gig :-) I don't mind paper piecing but in little bits :-) Can't wait to see yours when its done!!

Most of the piecing is straight forward, but you do need to get something for the Triangle in a Square patch. The Tri Recs ruler set is the least expensive, and that's really all you need.

Haven't made the whole quilt yet, but did a couple practice patches & liked the template. Looking at the current prices, I'm glad I bought it when I did!

When I made my storm at sea, I didn't have a template or any idea of what paper piecing was. The blocks are straight lines and I found a pattern in a book. There are a lot of points to match and that is the only problem I had. Be sure to cut accurately and double check your 1/4" seam. And, good luck with your project. I know it will be beautiful when you get it done..... and your daughter will love it.

Here is a link for a free pattern and it includes some templates. There are several free Storm at Sea quilt sites available to look at. Also search this board as there are a couple of Storm at Sea quilts posted. Maybe those members posted if they used a certain ruler set that made the project easier for them.

My sister & I made one when we were quilting newbies using paper templets. It was a lot of work but turned out Beautiful & the waves were Awesome. Did it in Blues & whites!

Matching the points is the most difficult and dealing with the bulk at some intersection can also cause problems. It is definitely a pattern for an intermediate quilter. I still have to get the border put on this baby. Took me over a decade to get this far !!
