the strangest things can happen here!

Many months ago, perhaps a year or more even, I posted for sale some metal template sets. I listed them by the name on the paper inside of the packages "Roy Daniel, Tinsmith" they say.
Well, a few weeks ago I got the strangest PM message about those templates.
Here is what the young man wrote to me:
[h=2]metal templates[/h]
I was doing a search under my grandfathers name, Roy Daniel and I was brought here. I lived with him and his wife Inez in Camden, Maine for almost 2 years. This was between 1982 and 1984. I was around 14. Inez made quite a few quilts and many people had asked Roy to make them some more permanent templates. I worked in his shop after school and on the weekends. I may have been the guy who glued the sandpaper onto the back of the ones you have. After gluing the paper and trimming the excess, I punched the pieces & wired them together. I remember the colored paper that would get put into every bag with the design on the front.
He was also known for making colonial tin pieces such as chandeliers, candle holders, snuffers, decorative mugs, and many other pieces.
He also sung in a barbershop quartet at his church. He would sing a lot of the old songs while working.
If you ever wish to part with a couple of patterns, please let me know.
Thanks,
Dave

Well, turns out that I did still have a couple of sets of these templates and as we speak a little set of twister templates is on their way to Dave's house to be reunited with him and add a piece of his family history back into his life!

How cool is that? All because he googled Roy's name and my sales ad came up in that search!
how cool that now we ALL have a little more insight/history about the wonderful tinsmith who helped keep quilting alive with his wonderful templates!

That is so great. When we are younger it never crosses our minds we want to save the most common things from our daily life.

Tartan 04-04-2012 08:46 AM

What a touching story! It's only as we get older and we start to lose the people who are precious to us that we appreciate some of the ordinary things they leave behind. I am glad you were able to reunite the templates with his grandson. He will treasure them.

The world is a village! (I live in Germany) I have a lot of templates made years (decades!) ago by Roy Daniel for me when I started to teach myself patchwork. My templates may be an oddity since I started out with centimeters before I found that using inches is so much easier.

Jingle 04-04-2012 10:36 AM

Great story and great ending. So glad you were able to send some to him. It is a small world.

Very touching story. Reminds me of some of the things I have that my Grandfather "whittled". And for those of you who don't know what that is its carving wood with a small pocket knife. He made all kinds of things that would be one piece but looked like several pieces joined together.

I would like that! I am going to ask him if he has any pix of those days to share with us!

barny 04-04-2012 05:59 PM

Jacquie, I really enjoyed this story. Please don't stop putting these things on here when you have them. That's all our history. It's a small world isn't it? I just received 2 quilt tops from an aunt who had them for a long time. My Mother has passed, and one of the tops is before 1925 that her sister had hand pieced so I know it is at least 87 years old because the sister got killed in a tornado in 1925. Thanks

Painiacs 04-04-2012 06:10 PM

That's great!! I bought a set of those templates. If he would like them I will find them. ! Pm me if he's interested!!

GreatStarter 04-04-2012 06:52 PM

That is one of the best things I have heard of. So happy you are able to help bring back alittle of his family history. I am sure he will great appreciate what you did.
