I would have probably asked her "how many quilts has she hand-pieced/quilted?

Both are done with love and don't think one is better than the other just different...

STAR 02-05-2010 01:46 PM

is she CRAZY!!! your work is beautiful!!! I could never do what you do with the machine. a quilt is a quilt no matter how it is made. I probably would have told her to kiss my &*^^%.

but thats me and I know that you are better than that so tell me who she is so I can tell her for you,LOL

june6995 02-05-2010 01:52 PM

ONCE MORE on this subject.....i told a friend about this and she asked what I said or did. I told her that she was older than I was and out of respect I kept my mouth shut and my hands to myself. I told I had feeling I would liked to have slapped her! to my surprise, she said, "then you should have hit her twice, once for me,too!"

STAR 02-05-2010 01:54 PM

HAHA!! if we go by that rule this lady would have been knocked out!! LOL

Jingle 02-05-2010 02:31 PM

I always say when someone acts stupid or rude "There are a lot of mean people in the world". You could have told her she must have taken her mean pills this morning and they are working very well. She probably uses a washing machine and dishwasher, instead of doing them the 'real way', by hand. Quilting by machine holds the layers together very well. Using a machine is called progress just like using washing machines and dishwashers and driving cars instead of horses and buggies. You could have told her you prefer to be a Modern Millie. She is probably jealous cause she can't figure out how to use a sewing machine. I have handquilted about 24 quilts and believe me I like the machine quilting much better, it's faster and easier on my fingers.

Denise Reimer 02-05-2010 03:01 PM

Isn't that what machines are for, if I had to (hand QUILT)
my quilts I never would have any done because my hand sewing is so lousy. Thats what top stitching is for on the sewing machine instead of appliqueing
As for that Woman(The post office lady) she needs a kick in the ##%%

mtnmama 02-05-2010 03:10 PM

I learned to hand piece and hand quilt and I am proud of the ones that I have made, however, it takes FOREVER to finish one. I am so jealous of someone that can machine quilt such as free motion quilting. I have tried, even stippling, and have trouble moving the quilt around to get it done. So... I appreciate a quilt, no matter how it is quilted.

sewnsewer2 02-05-2010 03:14 PM

That was rude of her and I agree, she doesn't know much about quilting either!

Let me clarify, she asked if I machine or hand quilted my pieces....

Again, I definately know there is a skill in hand quilting. I truly admire anyone who can do it....I just haven't reached that level yet.

Quilting is quilting no matter how it is done as far as I am concerned. Quilters that are of the older generations sometimes do not think that there is any way to quilt but by hand. Since we live in such a fast paced world this is why machine quilting has become so popular. So you just keep quilting the way that satisfies you.
:)

brushandthimble 02-05-2010 03:31 PM

Takes all kinds:)
I too would love to hand quilt all my quilts, I used to do very good, nice small stitches. Now....love my Handiquilter, I can get a queen size quilted in about 2 days:)

DeniseB 02-05-2010 03:36 PM

Shouldn't she have asked "are they hand or machine pieced?" I am sure she didn't know what she was talking about because they are no were near being quilted yet.

Some people. I like to refer to myself as a piecer. I have so many tops, they just aren't quilted yet. When I do get to quilting them it will be by machine.

rexie 02-05-2010 03:37 PM

I am a hand quilter...a lousy one. Why? Because I had a quilt machine and I just couldn't do it. Had the Handiquilter and a Juki and I couldn't walk and look and sew all at the same time. Machine quilting takes skill and a lot more concentration.

quiltingmom86 02-05-2010 03:43 PM

I laughed and laughed at the "Stoopid" stamp comment.
That is just to right on target.

JanetM 02-05-2010 03:59 PM

I don't churn my own butter, but I still consider myself a cook!

quiltsRfun 02-05-2010 03:59 PM

if I had to (hand QUILT)my quilts I never would have any done
Same here. After taking 20 yrs. to finish hand quilting one quilt I decided I needed to investigate machine quilting. And I don't think I'll ever do much hand piecing. I enjoy it but guess I'm just in too big a hurry.

mrspete 02-05-2010 04:19 PM

well this answers my old question that wakes me up in the middle of the night.......if ignore means me or them?

Margie 02-05-2010 04:32 PM

Maybe the only clothes that are really clean are if they were washed at the river and beaten on a rock, the only bread that is real is if you made your own yeast and baked it in a brick oven or in the fireplace, the only floors that are clean are those scrubbed on your knees with a brush, etc. How ridiculous.

I wish I had the talent to quilt by hand(but I have arthritis in them and cant) ..even then I would use the sewing machine to do the piecing that you cant see. I do think hand quilting is really beautiful...BUT so is machine quilting.

I also think that machine quilting is very difficult and complex. I can barely do the most fundamental machine quilting and hope to get better at it. My goodness, why cant people appreciate each skill for what it is. I have seen such works of art on here that they almost take my breath away. Pffffffffffffffffft, dont listen to rude, thoughtless, DUMB people.

Lockeb 02-05-2010 04:34 PM

I think I would have just asked that clerk if she could stand on her head and show what she really was..... :-)

Chasing Hawk 02-05-2010 04:37 PM

People still amaze me on how dumb and insensitive they can be. I had a woman ask me once if I danced around a fire because I am Native American. I politely told her, "Yes, I do...right in the middle of my kitchen, I have a fire pit there and everything."

Lockeb 02-05-2010 04:38 PM

LOL....way to go CHASING HAWK..I love it!!!! :-)

minnow895 02-05-2010 04:43 PM

there are a lot of people in this world that have nothing nice to say to any one they seem to have to put you down to feel good about them selves i had the same thing happen to me when sending off a quilt to a friend i saw her later that year at the fair looking at the quilts i over heard her say top her friend i wish i could make such butifull quilts but i just don't have the talent so maby this person is just plain jealous of your talent

mrs. fitz 02-05-2010 04:45 PM

You should've smacked her LOL.

minnow895 02-05-2010 04:46 PM

there are times i wish i wasnt a good christen or i might just have done that

lots2do 02-05-2010 04:58 PM

Comments like this are what make me drive to a post office further away when I have to mail packages. After a few encounters with a mean-spirited postal worker, I just can't take the chance she's working when I go. There is enough meanness in this world...

BellaBoo 02-05-2010 05:01 PM

I would have said. "No real quilter thinks that any longer."

minnow895 02-05-2010 05:01 PM

another option would be to ask to speak to the post master general or the head of that post office there is also a listing in the us goverment pages for the number of the mast post men another option is to email the post master general i google to find the web site and lodge a formal complaint

Oh I love to confront mean old biddies when they seem to be happy only when making someone have a miserable day like they have. I just ask why are you so negative today? I don't appreciate it at all. This really gets their goat: Let's turn that frown upside down and make a smile! I love to see them puff up about to explode. It's more effective when there are others in line.

minnow895 02-05-2010 05:11 PM

ROFLOL

Loretta 02-05-2010 08:35 PM

Sounds like nothing you would have said could have been understood by such a rude person.

Love your statement. I do feel better and I knew all of you would know where I was coming from.

This is why I love this board!!!

I agree with this.

quilt police at the P.O. WOW...

samroberts01 02-06-2010 06:32 AM

Wow!! How completly rude, what is wrong with people today!

butterjoy 02-06-2010 06:49 AM

I would have said, Ma'm I made the quilt MYSELF. Not the machine. It took my hands to run the machine and 90% is by my hands only. Grrr. Some people just don't see how much work and love goes into making the quilt.

RedGarnet222 02-06-2010 08:38 AM

My answer would be to give her the most understanding demure smile that would make her wonder what I was up to. She is in the dark ages and has no idea how to even use a rotory cutter, much less quilt for today.

You just can't argue with ignorance.

Eddie 02-06-2010 08:42 AM

She seriously sounds like she is not all there in the head. What a social misfit.

it wasn't the PO worker, it was the lady standing behind me in line.
