Leave the sewing machine at home. Pick it up on your way back through. You will be spending time with family. Grand kids will want to spend time with grandma. Sewing does not take time over grandchildren time. Time goes by too quickly, spend every minute possible with them. You can always sew at home.
What does it say to family if you prefer to sew instead of family time?

I agree with mighty. You may find you have no time at all to sew but what if it rains or you have no desire to do what the others want...you can say "I'll just stay here and sew" and no one should feel guilty. It's no different to me than taking a book along to read or now a days taking an ipad and spending all one's time on facebook. Go for it!

AnnT 03-16-2012 03:48 AM

I don't think that's stupid. I try to always take something to do, handwork if I have it . Whenever we go to Momma's I don't take my machine because she has one! But I do take it to my son's when we go visit there. It's your vacation, do what you enjoy!

kimbrennan 03-16-2012 03:50 AM

My two kids and their spouses and my granddaughter are meeting us there.

Not stupid but I would give up ALL my sewing stuff to spend 4 days with my kids and a...a....GRANDDAUGHTER!!!! Lucky you that your family wants to spend 4 days with you.....Maybe a magazine or two, but a sewing machine....NEVER!

solstice3 03-16-2012 04:14 AM

Do what makes you happy. I just did a 4 day getaway with hubby and was going stir crazy without machine.

Hueysmom 03-16-2012 04:16 AM

I fantasize that a whole vacation just quilting is my idea of a REAL VACATION!!!!!!

kydeb 03-16-2012 04:23 AM

I rent a beach house for a week every year in my former hometown. Last year I didn't take my sewing machine. This year I will take my sewing machine!! It's your vacation - do what you want!! If you take it and don't use it, no big deal but if you don't take it and want it.....oh well!!

robinsonkh 03-16-2012 04:25 AM

The other night my granddaughter and her fiancee dropped by to return our truck and they were in the living room talking to PAPA and I was in the sewing room. I heard them but did not take the time away from my sewing to touch base with them. I felt bad about it later. Life is really short and it could have been my last chance to talk to them. I love sewing but I love them more but my actions didn't say it. I say "people first, then sewing".

MaryAnnMc 03-16-2012 05:29 AM

If you don't take it and want it, you'll be kicking yoruself. If it's not a hindrance, take it along. The worst that can happen is your family jokes about how you can't be away from your machine for even a few days. Go for it.

starlite 03-16-2012 05:46 AM

Not stupid at all! Your vacation so why not do what you love to do.

GwynR 03-16-2012 05:50 AM

I would take it for sure, and probably make something for the GD. Perhaps you could even get her to help!

There is a casino nearby and the beach a block away, but I don't think I can go 4 days without sewing. I really don't have any hand sewing to do. Do it. It's your vacation & my experience has been when you get kids & grandkids together that they often will go off on their own together to do something like skiing or surfing. Then you can enjoy sewing in a beautiful atmosphere and everybody is happy.

mhansen6 03-16-2012 06:11 AM

Jeanne,
My husband and I just spent 4 days in Cannon Beach recently. I took a hand project, Grandmother's Flower Garden, and pulled the table up to the window, watch the storms and sewed. It was one of the most relaxing 4 days I have spent in a long time. I say have fun. Enjoy yourself. The weather is not the best this time of year so sewing and watching the storms will be wonderful.

I have brought my sewing machine along on vacations (where I would have the space) since I was 15! And that's a LONG time ago! (And if there isn't room to take my machine, I make sure I have enough hand work to do. Sometimes its the only time of the year I get any appliqué done.) For the last several years, I've taken my machine to the house we rented at the Outer Banks. Especially if it rains, I'm not the one going nuts over being trapped inside and having to play board games to pass the time! Take it with you and enjoy your vacation!

janny40 03-16-2012 06:41 AM

Sounds like a good idea, if you like to sew, do it, that's part of your vacation. I go on cruises at times, thought it might be fun to go to one that has the sewing and quilting classes, that would be fun for me.

BarbaraSue 03-16-2012 07:21 AM

I take mine when I travel. If it is stupid then that's just what I am and I'm OK with that. Would your family really expect anything else from you if you sew in all of your free time? Seems part of you. I say Go For It!!

quiltingnonie 03-16-2012 07:23 AM

Th weather has been horrible at the OR coast this past week....and you never know if that could happen while you are there. Which means a lot of inside time.....while the others are watching TV or playing games you can sit and sew. :)

Grace MooreLinker 03-16-2012 07:28 AM

do what you would like , the others will.

Lavada 03-16-2012 07:59 AM

I vote take your machine but use it only if you stay in the room while others are doing something you do not enjoy

ItsJustMe 03-16-2012 08:43 AM

Do what makes you happy.

rjwilder 03-16-2012 09:04 AM

I take my machine with me when we RV up the Calif/Oregon coast. You never know when the wind and rain will arrive. Even though you are vacation with family, everyone needs a break. If the weather is bad maybe some will go to the movies or shopping and you can enjoy your sewing.

LoriMcc 03-16-2012 09:07 AM

I'm with you all the way!

pattilynn 03-16-2012 09:10 AM

I would take it if it were me.

reginalovesfabric 03-16-2012 09:12 AM

not at all, you know what they say "have sewing machine will travel"

have fun

jaly3162 03-16-2012 09:57 AM

I took my sewing machine to Myrtle Beach for 7 days and it was just my husband and I didn't sew one stitch.

valsma 03-16-2012 10:05 AM

No that is not stupid. Have yourself a personal little quilting retreat. If your not into shopping or gambling or walking the beach then by all means you should do something your enjoy while your there. Enjoy your time. If your going to Chinook Winds tell my neice Sarah in guest services hello.

bunbear64 03-16-2012 10:18 AM

i don't think that is stupid at all! i took my sewing machine camping with us a couple years ago. we have a trailer with a little deck that we stay at. i put a card table up on the deck - outside! - and i sewed my heart out. i was able to sew quite a bit during that vacation. we did family things, but there were times when we went seperate directions for a few hours. i was glad to have the machine there with me. and i'll just mention that the car was so packed that i had to ride four hours to the campground with that machine right next to my feet in the car! hee hee hee.

YukonViv 03-16-2012 10:27 AM

It's not stupid at all!!! My friend just wet away on a road trip to visit her daughter and family. She took her sewing machine! I know that when I go on a trip I take my knitting and my cross stitching so why not a sewing machine, I like the idea.

Gladys 03-16-2012 10:46 AM

Maybe sewing is like a vacation to you. You obviously enjoy it a lot. I think it would be nice to have it with you in case you do find you want to sew.

w7sue 03-16-2012 10:52 AM

I always sew when I go to the beach - weather is always unpredictable - are you going to be in Lincoln City? If yes, go north, there is a small quilt shop in Cloverdale - BJ's - (just past the first Pacific City turnoff) - you will turn right and go down a dirt road to the end - lots of fabric and another one in Tillamook - you will need to go a few blocks into town and turn left, then left again (one way streets) and it is in a pink house on the right - Jane's.

We have a house in Pacific City and I sew every time I am there - sometimes friends come over and we have a girls quilting weekend - no kids - no grandkids - no husbands! We sew, talk and watch "chick" flicks the whole time. We take turns cooking and in general have a great time.

janiesews 03-16-2012 11:04 AM

Taking a sewing machine on vacation is not stupid at all. My Featherweight and I travel all the time. Recently went to visit a friend in KY and she requested I bring my machine she had a couple of things she wanted me to do for her. It is relaxing for me and if you like to think you could enjoy some time with your machine then go for it. Everyone has their own personal things they enjoy doing and sewing happens to be at the top of my list. Enjoy your vacation and family and you can still do both at the same time. :>)

quilter56 03-16-2012 11:12 AM

Not stupid. When we go to our lake house I always want to take mine but seems my husband can never find a place for it. I can hardly go a day w/out sewing. We have had company for week and I haven't been able to sew, driving me crazy.

coopah 03-16-2012 12:51 PM

Oregon coast? Yes, take the machine. There is always the chance of rain there and evenings can get long sometimes. Of course, the casino could solve that problem. Take lots of quarters and have fun!:D

jlm5419 03-16-2012 01:02 PM

It's your vacation, so do what you want. I know exactly how you feel. Hee, hee, I am tempted to bring a featherweight when I visit Switzerland next month. :p

craftybear 03-16-2012 01:04 PM

your vacation, take your sewing machine, tell your family it is your other kid and have to take her along with you, be sure to give her a name

Have fun on vacation!

I hope you find some quilt shops in that area, you will need to buy some fabric while you are on vacation

Leave it behind how often do you get the opportunity to sit back and enjoy your family. Granted they love your talent but they want you on the vacation not your machine

jeanharville 03-16-2012 02:02 PM

Be a good boy scout and always be prepared :>)

Rose_P 03-16-2012 03:03 PM

I have learned to take independent stuff to do to family gatherings, even if I might not use it. Sometimes everyone but me wants to sit and watch TV. That's not quality time with the family as far as I'm concerned.

roserips 03-16-2012 03:17 PM

Myself I would much rather sew and walk the beach. Last time I went to the coast I yes had my machine with me and found a local group and took a class making mariner compass blocks. So yes sew, quilt enjoy your vacation!

Juliebelle 03-16-2012 03:19 PM

I usually take my machine if we are going to be gone longer then 2 weeks, and it is your vacation, do what you enjoy doing.
