Is this stupid?

I'm going to the Oregon Coast to a 5 bedroom beach house for 4 days. My two kids and their spouses and my granddaughter are meeting us there. I am bringing my sewing machine. Is that stupid? I have to stop and pick it up (it had repairs done on it) on the way to the coast, so I want to bring some fabric and maybe sew. There is a casino nearby and the beach a block away, but I don't think I can go 4 days without sewing. I really don't have any hand sewing to do. I just don't know if I should bring my fabric and machine in the house. I thought if everyone went shopping or something, I could sew. What do you think? It's my vacation.

Vicki W 03-14-2012 04:07 PM

It is your vacation, do what you want to do.

Mazda 03-14-2012 04:11 PM

Go for it! Even if you don't use it, you will be ready if the opportunity presents itself.

kiffie2413 03-14-2012 04:17 PM

Well,
I can only reiterate that it is YOUR vacation, so do what makes you happy!...that being said, anywhere I have the chance to sew, I will, usually its by hand, as can be hard to take my sewing machine some places; but if I could take my sewing machine, I would! So, enjoy your vacation, and post some pics of what you end up sewing!! :)
Regards,
Kif

I never take any sewing when I take a vacation. I can sew at home. There are lots and lots of things I can't do at home like go walk on the beach with a granddaughter that I'd much rather do on vacation. You'll come back revived and refreshed and ready to tackle all your projects.

dunster 03-14-2012 04:17 PM

Sounds like a great idea. If you want to sew, you will have everything ready, and if you don't then you don't have to. Have fun, and I hope the weather is pleasant for you.

Nanamoms 03-14-2012 04:33 PM

If your DGD is old enough, maybe use some time to teach her to sew!!

jaciqltznok 03-14-2012 04:47 PM

not really stupid, but trust me, you won't need it....Four days with family will keep you busy enough!

RDM 03-14-2012 05:02 PM

Love the Oregon coast, but if weather turns rainy and you're stuck inside, you'll appreciate having your machine along. There's some nice quilt stores on the coast too. I wouldn't feel bad doing what you love to do and I'm sure meals and beach walks will still give you some family time. Enjoy.

mighty 03-14-2012 05:04 PM

Not stupid, take it! If you use it great but if not nothing lost!!!!

barny 03-14-2012 05:12 PM

No, you TAKE IT. I am at places all the time with my mind on my sewing machine. You'll be sorry if you don't. They take a nap, you sew. You can sleep some other time. Just my opinion. I also paint, and I'm away from my home and wish I had at least taken some watercolors and a brush, just in case.

DebraK 03-14-2012 05:13 PM

do you feel stupid? Do what makes you happy.

Charlee 03-14-2012 05:15 PM

Lincoln City got a few inches of snow a couple of days ago, so I wouldn't count on warm weather, altho I certainly hope that it swings back to nice days again while you're there! :)

Take your machine...I hope you're too busy to use it, but on the chance that you can, you'll have it. :) I take my featherweight nearly everywhere when we travel...along with hand sewing.

earthwalker 03-14-2012 05:21 PM

Love the beach but I'd be giving the casino a big miss....If it were me, I'd be taking handwork or a machine (ahh a featherweight is but a dream for me:)). Hope you have a wonderful time and the weather is kind....(if not you can be busy with that machine:)).

this was going to be my reply. Besides you can't have a machine and no material LOL

tatavw01 03-14-2012 05:37 PM

I take my machine always...you never know

kittenquilts 03-14-2012 05:42 PM

Considering we're talking the Oregon Coast, no telling what the weather will be! You may be happy to have something to do inside. Don't forget to check out the quilt shops while you are there!

amandasgramma 03-14-2012 05:44 PM

Take it -- by the sounds of it, the weather will be bad....so you'll be IN the house! SEW!

j 03-14-2012 05:48 PM

No sewing machine

Four days isnt very much and are you going to stay in your bedroom so nothing gets touched. Leave the machine at home. - J

gailinva 03-14-2012 06:27 PM

I agree!!! Just think if you did have some time and had nothing to do!!!!!

I agree- i love sewing but my sewing machine is staying home.. Your GD is lil now, take advantage of it and make memories with her instead of sewing...

nativetexan 03-14-2012 06:46 PM

Just tell them it's just in case you have with drawal symptoms and can't stay away from the machine.

I think you answered your own question. A vacation is to relax and enjoy yourself.

moonwork42029 03-14-2012 07:30 PM

I'm going to the Oregon Coast to a 5 bedroom beach house for 4 days. My two kids and their spouses and my granddaughter are meeting us there.

Are they planning on you being the babysitter for the GD? How old is she? Do they live close to you normally or is this a special trip for all of you? Do you have a spouse that is going also? What are your plans with him if he is going? Otherwise I'd take it to avoid being the babysitter, unless that of course is your agreed upon plan.

I am bringing my sewing machine. Is that stupid? I have to stop and pick it up (it had repairs done on it) on the way to the coast, so I want to bring some fabric and maybe sew.

There is a casino nearby Do you like to gamble and have the funds to do so? Would you be going solo or with family?

and the beach a block away, but I don't think I can go 4 days without sewing.

I really don't have any hand sewing to do. If you are stopping to pick up your machine and/or buy fabric, you could grab some small hand project to tuck into your bag.

I just don't know if I should bring my fabric and machine in the house. I thought if everyone went shopping or something, I could sew. Again, to me it depends on how often you get to see them...if it's all the time, then use the time as you wish, if this is a rare occasion, I can't imagine wanting to sew more than visiting with my kids, even if they are talking to each other and not me, I have learned so much about them and the things they did in the past, it was a hoot.

What do you think? It's my vacation. Yes it's your vacation -- plan accordingly, but I would mention it to your kids so they don't get their feelings hurt when you ignore them in order to sew. Of course this is just my opinion :).

Hope you have a wonderful vacation whatever you decide to do.

#1piecemaker 03-14-2012 07:34 PM

It is your vacation. Take it! Who knows, it might rain the whole time you're there and you will have something to do!!

Of course enjoy your family. But I don't think it's necessarily ignoring them. Maybe one night they're watching a movie you aren't interested in and you'd spend the time sewing. I bring my Featherweight. Even if I only use it once, or use it for 30 mins. every day I end up in a better mood to be with and enjoy my family! Have a great trip. Let us know what you did. :)

BellaBoo 03-14-2012 08:41 PM

I take at least 1/2 of vacation with family for doing what I want to do. Why do moms and wives think we have to do what everyone else wants to do and not what we want to do? No one was asking if I would have hurt feelings if they decided to go do something. I quit asking if anyone minds a long time ago.

BETTY62 03-14-2012 08:44 PM

Well, I don't think it's stupid. I have a lightweight machine that travels with me.

MacThayer 03-14-2012 09:52 PM

The bottom line is this: if you go and don't take your sewing machine, you'll end up wishing you had it. If you take your sewing machine, the absolute worst that can happen is that you don't have time to use it. How bad can that be? That you're so busy with family you don't have time to sew? I vote for taking it. It's a win-win situation regardless of whether you use it or not!

Cheers!

Annaquilts 03-14-2012 10:06 PM

Ofcourse bring it. I bring mine when I go motor home camping with 11 kids and a DH. He even aids me in whatever I need. There is no way you can go 4 days without sewing or should. Just think of all the other poor vacationers being stuck with you without a sewing machine for 4 days. For me sewing is such a stress relief. Besides the younger crowd might be attached to their laptops or other computerized stuff. I'd sew above casino or shopping any day. Well maybe fabric shopping would get me going. Have a wonderful time! Besure you have your cord and quarter inch foot. There is not one to be found on the North California coast. LOL Guess how I know.

Annaquilts 03-14-2012 10:10 PM

I was thinking the same. Nothing like sitting in cold icy wind with sand grains pelting you.

QuiltingCrazie 03-14-2012 11:43 PM

i would take it....family is great but I've noticed even family is so overrun by electronics you might get bored! The only way I would leave it if it was an electronic free vacation. You might find the grand kids even at the beach sitting and playing on laptops and ds's and iPods. I limit my kids from those things when go on vacation and myself and the DH from laptops, so many people don't and they don't realize it's rude to have a conversation while playing a game on an iPod. Take it and even if you don't use it it's there plus if your anything like my mother shes an early riser so she brings books everywhere because she always gets up at 4am like clockwork and no one else gets up til 8 at least. She stops when we get up... Have a fabulous vacation!!

pinkberrykay 03-15-2012 02:54 AM

Take it, like someone said Lincoln City got snow this past week and farther south got 6+ inches. Plus. you never know if you run onto a quilt store and find the perfect pattern and fabric that you want to start sewing immediately. Not sure where on the Coast You are going but there is a huge Quilt Shop in Cannon Beach on the south end of town.

Have fun and enjoy your sewing time. Let us know how the vacation goes.

Rosewood9 03-15-2012 06:11 AM

Hey, it's your vacation so do what you want!

gramarraine 03-15-2012 06:22 AM

Maybe take a small project that you can work on if you get bored with family, shopping, fun with DGD and everything else you can do. Personally I wouldn't even worry about it. If I had it along I would feel like I needed to be sewing even if I didn't want to.

QUILTNMO 03-15-2012 07:24 AM

no its not stupid i take handwork no matter where i go

SandScraps 03-15-2012 07:44 AM

I never go anywhere without my sewing machine. Even if 4 days seem short, there might just be some time to get a bit of sewing done. My favourite time is early in the morning when the whole family is still sound asleep.

nycquilter 03-15-2012 07:51 AM

what's the worst that happens? You take it and don't use it? Oh well, at least it is no longer in the shop and you have it.

Tartan 03-15-2012 09:11 AM

Do what makes you happy. You need to pick it up anyway and you can just bring it in the room in case you get an opportunity to use it. I would bring an extra bit of money in case you can pick up some great fabric to bring home. Get some good pictures too to use for a landscape quilt. I leave my machine at home when we go on vacation because I am chief cook and bottle washer and have little time to sew. If that sounds like I'm not really on vacation....I love it!

2manyhobbies 03-16-2012 03:22 AM

I wouldn't hesitate!
