Love the quilt - That was wonderful start from your MIL! Congrats!

. . . Now you understand . . . since you have been "bitten" by the "bug" you will never be able to go past a fabric store without checking it out!!

grammyj 07-26-2010 04:49 AM

What a sweet MIL to do that. You will always remember her kindness for helping you get started quilting.

Ann S. 07-26-2010 06:05 AM

I'd always heard that quilting could be addictive and I just didn't "get it." But...after piecing just a few pieces of my first quilt, I knew what people meant. Couldn't wait to see how the next fabrics looked with the first ones. I got addicted really fast!

Sandra-P 07-26-2010 11:54 AM

I am excited for you! Sounds like you have a great MIL. This is a good place for support and friends who quilt.

klgreene 07-26-2010 12:55 PM

I made two rail fence doll quilts to match the two lap top quilts I made for my granddaughters. It's a nice way of using up some of the fabrics you know you probably won't use again. It is easy, fun, and also easy to quilt. So have fun with it. It probably won't be your last "Rail Fence"

Lady Shivesa 07-26-2010 12:57 PM

Thank you ladies!! :)

I just finished piecing the last rail fence block. So very excited. :) Now I need to figure out a border to use and move on from there.

A funny moment - I searched the whole house up and down looking for my missing pieces (two blocks sewn together, what amounts to half of my blocks). I was getting frustrated because I could not for the life of me find it.

Turns out I forgot I had already pinned it to the other half and both of them were laying right next to my sewing machine staring at me the whole time. >_< LOL

Wonderful!!Now your hooked.

As a few of you may know, I'm a newbie to quilting. I've yet to make my first quilt. Well today my MIL came over, brought me tons of fabric - scraps and larger pieces - as well as tools (rotary, cutting mat, ironing board, etc). She showed me how to piece together the rail fence (is it rail fence or fence rail?).

Together we ironed, measured, cut, sewed and pressed about 10 parts for the rail fence (they weren't whole blocks, haven't got that far yet...I'm talking about sewing three strips together to form a fourth of a block).

She left a little while ago and I did nine more. I ran out of fabric to do anymore, but as it stands I've got either a nice little wall hanging-to-be or maybe a lap quilt-to-be.

So I said all of that to say that I'm SO excited about quilting! What a thrill I got when things began to make sense, and how much more exciting when I figured out I could do it on my own! This all may sound silly, but I think you all will understand. Can't wait for DH to get home so I can gush about how awesome this day has been!!

It is so VERY exciting to see progress on a project.
Congratulations. Keep on going.

grandme26 07-26-2010 02:18 PM

I know how it feels to get started on your first project. You will get the same thrill for each quilt you start and finish, Keep it up.

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! Another board I read refers to the quilters (as opposed to the garment sewers) as "going over to the dark side". :)

Bubblegum0077 07-26-2010 02:50 PM

How wonderful that you enjoyed quilting today, even with you MIL! That says a lot about your family. Hubby will be proud that the two most important women in his life shared some valuable time with each other.

Isn't it a good feeling to see something "grow' and become a thing.! My favorite part about quilting is putting all the blocks together. My least favorite is trying to quilt the three layers and it bunching up in the back and having to pull stitches out. LOL done that a few times.

Keep on going. You are doing a great job. Post a picture so we can see your progress. I am curious.

Bubblegum0077 07-26-2010 02:51 PM

Who is the mystery avatar?

Tweety2911 07-26-2010 02:58 PM

How wonderful to have a MLI to share quilting with. She is a winner in my book. Congratulations on your progress.

eye2quilt 07-26-2010 03:26 PM

Congrats on your quilt !!

Welcome to quilting, Alexis. And, so nice to have a MIL that can provide expertise, scraps and bits of wisdom! Enjoy the quilting - it can satisfy many needs in life!

I've got all the pieces together now. Moving on to a border as soon as I pick the right fabric! :)

Not sure if 'mystery avatar' was in reference to my own - but if it was, my avatar is of Faramir and Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings movies. I was thinking about changing it to my pic or maybe a pic of my first quilt project. :D

I am so very blessed to have such a wonderful MIL - she feels just like a second mother to me. DH keeps telling me how happy he is that we can quilt together and stuff.

Much love to all and thanks for the encouragement! :D

I felt your excitement when I was reading your post. You are lucky to have such a nice MIL to help you get started. Sometimes that is all it takes for you to take off on your own after.

wildyard 07-26-2010 06:47 PM

Way to go!!! I've only been quilting for 2.5 years and my stash is now well over 500 yards, probably closer to 1,000!!! But I do remember those days when 2.5 plastic grocery bags was LOTS of material. This quilting thing is addicting!!! And so is buying fabric

earthwalker 07-26-2010 06:55 PM

Well done, and how wonderful to begin your quilting journey with your MIL. May this be the first of many!
