I feel like shouting for joy!

As a few of you may know, I'm a newbie to quilting. I've yet to make my first quilt. Well today my MIL came over, brought me tons of fabric - scraps and larger pieces - as well as tools (rotary, cutting mat, ironing board, etc). She showed me how to piece together the rail fence (is it rail fence or fence rail?).

Together we ironed, measured, cut, sewed and pressed about 10 parts for the rail fence (they weren't whole blocks, haven't got that far yet...I'm talking about sewing three strips together to form a fourth of a block).

She left a little while ago and I did nine more. I ran out of fabric to do anymore, but as it stands I've got either a nice little wall hanging-to-be or maybe a lap quilt-to-be.

So I said all of that to say that I'm SO excited about quilting! What a thrill I got when things began to make sense, and how much more exciting when I figured out I could do it on my own! This all may sound silly, but I think you all will understand. Can't wait for DH to get home so I can gush about how awesome this day has been!!

littlehud 07-24-2010 12:56 PM

It's not silly at all. I still remember making my first quilt and the way it made me feel to see what I was creating. I still get the feeling. I'm so happy for you. Do you have more fabric coming? If not I would be happy to share some of my fat quarters with you. Send me a PM.

nana pat 07-24-2010 12:57 PM

dont ever lose this exuberance, its wonderful to see.

Lady Shivesa 07-24-2010 12:57 PM

Thanks all!! :D

I have more fabric, littlehud, I just ran out of one of the three I was using for the strips. She gave me about 2.5 plastic grocery bags full of fabric so I'll be set for awhile - but I surely appreciate the offer. :)

How wonderful, especially the time spent with the MIL, and what a great thing for her to bring you the fabric. Enjoy, and treasure the time you have.

I am excited for you. I still feel the thrill when I start or finish a piece.

I've been quilting and making special things for most of my life (now 76, but don't tell). Still find the quilt room my refuge from all of life's trials. A wonderful place to go and think your own thoughts, make up your own patterns, make special gifts for those you love. One year we lost a grandson, a son, and a great grandson. It was a horrible year and I found solace in my sewing and quilting. A place to go and grieve, to remember the special times with each of those we lost, and to just love those that are still with us through soft quilts and special gifts. You will never regret the time you spend sewing and quilting. Enjoy! Enjoy!

Lady Shivesa 07-24-2010 05:54 PM

Awww, you are all so sweet and kind. :) I have already learned much from reading about everyone's experiences, questions, etc.

I'll post some pics in the picture category. :)

cherylynne 07-24-2010 06:00 PM

I'm glad you had a great sewing experience. Quarter inch seam is probably the most important thing you need to master. Once I could do those seams I could make any quilt I wanted.

Bottle Blonde 07-24-2010 06:50 PM

The day you had --- well, it just warms my heart and makes me smile!

I love the thrill of being a little nervous about starting a new project - then the pride of being able to conquer something I thought would be tough - then the satisfaction of the finished project is just heaven. But the highest-high is gifting that quilt to a loved one who appreciates the effort you put into something just for them! Happy Quilting! :D :D

annette1952 07-24-2010 06:53 PM

Yay!!! Another one to our team!!! Whoot whoot!! Prepare to become very addicted. VERY.

fleurdelisquilts.com 07-24-2010 07:46 PM

I'm so happy for you. That feeling just keeps going. You get it with the first quilt and keep it alive by making more quilts and then by challenging yourself to make quilts with difficult piecing, applique, etc. And if you ever sense that you're losing it, just make a quilt and take it to a nursing home, hospital, St. Judes, you get it back all over again.

leaha 07-24-2010 07:52 PM

oh so glad you had such a great day, first of many I hope!

Jim's Gem 07-24-2010 07:53 PM

I'm excited for you. That feeling of making that first quilt is what will keep you making more and more and more.

The best part is that you MIL came over and helped you do this.

Mariposa 07-25-2010 05:02 PM

What a great day you had! Your MIL sounds like a fellow quilter also. The two of you got to spend some quality time together, and you've learned something new as well. Congrats on your intro to the wonderful world of quilting!! :)

quilt3311 07-26-2010 03:17 AM

Oh, give your MIL a hug from me. You are so lucky to have a MIL who cares enough to help you get started in quilting. Mine was not a sewer, so she couldn't help when I started, but OH how she knew how to cook!!! Learned a lot about putting a meal together and still appreciate what she taught a new bride. (50 years ago too--)

janiesews 07-26-2010 03:24 AM

That is great! There is a good feeling to be the recipient of gifts of time, talents shared, as well as the tools of the trade and fabric. I love to be able to help someone else get "the bug" so this art will not die out. Have fun with your rail fence.

jolo 07-26-2010 04:10 AM

I looked at your quilt ,it is really pretty. So thankful for your MIL. I love to introduce newbies too.

fireworkslover 07-26-2010 04:16 AM

Welcome to this wonderful, creative addicting hobby. You know you can look forward to meeting many new friends who share this love. Is there a quilt guild you can join in your area? That's a great way to meet even more people who share the love...
