I love the nickel quilt books. I have one and have made a few from it. Great instructions, and its organized into light, medium, and dark, 5 inch squares, but they are amazingly scrappy. Or can be less when charm pks are used.

You definitely need a controlled scrappy--using one color as a main color that kind of stabilizes and gives an overall theme. I've made several of them and am always happy with them. I've used that one that irish rose suggested, using Sunny Lanes...it looks great! [ATTACH=CONFIG]373226[/ATTACH]

The solid color gives you someplace to rest your eye and get a break from the visual "noisiness" of a scrappy.

I'm doing one right now 2 1/2" squares blocks of 25 squares 5 across and 5 down. I sew lights to darks. I'm making a second one because like you I'm structured, the next one with be 25 square blocks down by color. So one all red, blue....etc with a dark sashing to pop the blocks...just my take

Just start browsing and you will discover some beautiful quilts. Also, remember that any quilt pattern can become a scrap quilt!

Hi Coffeebreak; Have a look at this quilt. I can't wait to start one. I do believe it is the most interesting one I have ever seen. It will also give me the opportunity to practice quilt as you go.

Justflyingin, your quilts are VERY nice! Agree, having one color to let your eyes rest makes it all seemed "planned". :) Now to just get busy using all those scraps!

These books are my "go to" for scrap inspiration. I love these !

I definitely prefer controlled scrappy, on the few occassions I do one. The first 2 of these are my own design, the last is a Bonnie Hunter mystery. She is the queen of scraps, I think :)

The pink quilt was an attempt to use up all my pink scraps, because "I don't like pink". Turns out, I do. I absolutely love this quilt and refuse to give it away, even though it doesn't really fit my be and originally it was intended for a donation quilt.

Scrap quilts are my favorites....maybe because they look so old-fashioned. You can make really scrappy quilts, or more controlled scrappy. If you have a hard time with scrappy, you could try putting the scraps into paper bags, and pulling out and sewing what comes out of the bag...that would make it more spontaneous.
