Thanks girls for the scrap quiilt pattern information I too have to start thinking about making several and soon....

Try a controlled scrappy if you like more structure. Pick a color pallette and stick with it just use a bunch of different fabrics of those colors. My first controlled scrappy I bought bunches of 1/4 yards at my lqs, so it didn't hit me too hard. Was possessed ever since - lol

Try Judy Martin's "Log Cabin Quilt Book" - I made the quilt on the cover, but used purple scraps for the red squares, then filled in the rest with scraps - I tend to quilt in blues, teals, purples so my scrapy quilt was predominately those colors. I only had to add some new background fabrics as I always seem to be short on those. I liked it as the strips are only 1 1/2" so I got to use a lot of my scraps.

She also does a mystery scrap quilt each year, she will be listing the fabric requirements on Halloween, the first clue will be the day after Thanksgiving. I have done her last three mystery quilts and had a ball......

I made a scrappy double Irish chain using the scrappy fabrics and white fabric to accent them.
Someone on this site gave me the idea. I made it queen sized for my guest room using a white border and a variety of small print scraps for a variegated binding.

I have been "learning" to use scraps this last year by venturing out into areas that are somewhat new to me. And I make these as smaller lap sized quilts for charity........The more I make, the more I'm liking the scrappiness.....Believe me, they grow on you and the learning experience goes to a good cause!!!

I just finished a lap quilt out of scrapes, pattern is called X's and O's, a tute from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I have been cutting up my "Leftovers" into 6" squares and then into strips for my string quilts....I think what made this one not look 'so scrappy' was the addition of the same color corners....that was the unifying theme thru out. Like with my string quilt that had all black strips in the center of each block......I think if you have one piece the same thru out the quilt, be it even a simple black or white fabric, that seems to unify and give your quilt a more classic look rather than what some people call Scrappy or un-organized and scattered....IMHO:p

I agree with the recommendations for Bonnie Hunter. She's fabulous and has tons of ideas. I also agree that the trick to keeping your quilt from being too chaotic is to control the color selection, placement and color value. It's possible and quite popular to make monochromatic quilts that are scrappy. Choose one color and one background color and -- - voila! I'm doing that with my blue fabrics. It's my biggest stash and simply HAD to reduce it. Of course, what did I do??? Had to buy JUST A FEW more to 'balanace' out the darks and lights.

There are loads of quilt blocks - someone else mentioned Quilters Cache - that look wonderful done in scrappy style. The 'Depression' block comes to mind.

Try making a few quilts for LINUS QUILTS or the Veterans or another charity. That way, you'll get a good idea of what works and what doesn't work for you; you'll get a better feel for your own style; and you'll be doing a good thing along the way.
