Suggestions needed for binding color
1 Attachment(s)
I made this quilt for a friend's first baby. The shower is in early May and I'd like to get this done in plenty of time. My quandary: what color should I bind it with? Red seems too bold, purple too bright unless maybe lavender. ???? I so appreciate all who are willing to make suggestions.

i would use the same as the border fabric

Do you have more of the border fabric?? The decision is do you want the binding to blend with the border or be an accent. If you don't have additional border fabric, I would choose a color from the border fabric.
I would go yellow, as you have some yellow in the blocks and the border. Yellow is a happy colour and babies = happy:).
I would use the darker blue in the top right block.
The way I pick borders or bindings is to audition each different color by putting a half inch swath showing out from under the edge. Take pictures of the quilt with each different color. Which one do you like the best? Side note: with all that blue, I hope she is having a boy. |
Barb, Nope a girl. I thought the flowers in the blue/green border were feminine as well as all the appliquéd flowers. Hope i'm not wrong in my thinking. It happens often. ;) I backed it in a soft yellow print. I do have enough of the border fabric left so I will probably go ahead and use that rather than a contrasting color. I guess it is busy enough as is.

You have light or turquoise blue in the very center of your quilt and in the border. I would audition a solid or marble in that color.

My first choice would be blue but since it is for a girl, that's out. I would bind with the border or the green that is in all the leaves.
For quilts like these that are multicolored (and especially baby quilts), I tend to love a striped binding! So just another option to consider!
I would go with either the border fabric or the same dark blue shade as in the border. I also think luvspaper's idea of a striped fabric would be cute if you can find a stripe in the same colors as in the border.
I like the idea of using the border fabric as binding....lighter colors look nice, but tend to show dirt faster or even stain darker with use.
I was thinking of a solid or something that reads solid and in a color that you pull from the border. I think that will tie it all in nicely. I just happen to like my bindings to be a little different.
I think I have that pattern in a book of baby quilts, but I've never made it. I like your color choices. |
What a pretty quilt! It is perfect for a girl, and I would bind it in the same fabric as the last border...or maybe in a darker blue. Just beautiful. I have never accepted that blue was for boys and pink for girls. Blue is for everyone.

Very cute quilt! I would go with yellow or green.
What about the "flanged" border that has a tutorial on the site here? Sunny yellow for the flange part and either the border fabric or a strip with those colors or the darker blue as the "bulk" of the border?

You could use the same aqua in your background...
My first response would be to pick up the dark blue that is in the border flowers, but if that is not available and you have more border fabric I would do that. I shy away with lighter fabrics because they get dirty and some times it doesn't wash out as well.
use either the blue in the border or the blue in the top corner flower.
I like mine dark since it will be dragged around it won't show to much. |
Lots of good binding choices from everyone. I just wanted to say that I think your quilt is adorable and that you did a lovely job on it.
I would either use the border fabric or the aqua background fabric. |
I would use yellow
My first thought was to find a blue that is similar to the darker blue in the border. But I think a stripe would be fun and perky!
I tend to bind the same as the border.
I would use the yellow or the blue in the border fabric.
How about the border fabric with a flange tucked in there?
Here is a good tutorial with pictures. http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/12...-tutorial.html I would suggest you audition a color or two for the flange to see which one your eye likes best! I might even try the red, pink or yellow. Don't forget to post a picture when its done! We love pictures. Hope this helps... |
How about a bright yellow?
same as border fabric or solid color of green or blue. What is this pattern? I love it.
Lots of great ideas. I love that you didn't opt for baby pink for a girl. With the brighter colors, she will use and treasure this one for her whole life!
Being that I am the person who seems to always get the project finished the night before it's due, I'd go for the 2 color flange, narrow yellow with wider darker blue tone fabric. Hopefully, close to colors from the center! Whatever you choose to do, this is a beautiful quilt and going to one lucky girl! |

First choice is the same fabric as the border. Second choice is yellow because you have a fair amount of yellow in the quilt and mentioned that you have it in the backing. I think your quilt is very pretty.
I would use a pale yellow or pale teal colored batik for the border. It is a beautiul quilt.
These days blue is not strictly for boys. I think all the flowers say "girl" enough without worrying about the blue.
I would bind it in yellow. You have yellow in the border fabric.... |
I would also use a flange in yellow with a stripe binding! Pretty quilt!
Yellow, for me.
Another thought.....what about binding in the background color? It would tie it all together.
If you have more border fabric I would use that or some of the green you set the blocks together with.
What a cute quilt. I would go with the border fabric for the binding, or, if you don't have enough, pick out a color in the border and use that.
LELLOW! That was how my little boy said it! Well , he sang it, LOL!
I, like Billy's wife, would bind it in the background fabric that is around your blocks. I think it would blend everything in nicely.
