Suggestions Needed
My 10 year old granddaughter ‘needs’ a new quilt ‘cause the one I made her when she was born is in pieces. 😄
She has requested these colors; yellow, blue, pink, orange, and purple. She would love a yellow and pink flower right in the middle. Any ideas? |
If you wanted something really quick and easy what about ‘Warm Wishes’? Perhaps you could fussy-cut fabric to put flowers (and butterflies?) in the centre of the squares.
Whatever you make I’m sure your granddaughter will treasure it. |
I'm partial to crazy blocks or a stack-n-whack. You could applique a very large flower in the middle.

Here's a link to a rainbow quilt and you could add a flower to the middle. I also think "Warm Wishes" that Moira suggested would be pretty too. |
Thank you all for the great ideas!

my first thought was this one, with a flower in place of the bow

Look for a floral that has all or most of the colours in it and plan the top with it.
|
If she likes flowers or something floral then you might want to look at the pattern "Prairie Flower" tutorial by Jenny Doan of MSQC. I am in the process of making this pattern and it is using flower fabric. I think that is the name of the pattern?! If you can't find it just PM me and I can help you out with the pattern.

I've been working on a Wonky 9-patch I've been detailing in the Fabric Moratorium thread. Sorry, there is no pattern or book I've been following just my thoughts and photos in progress but I think it would work well for your Granddaughter. It's a donation project and I always saw it going to an 8-14 year old girl.
For your project I'd keep the center of each 9-patch the floral print and then randomize the colors around it. I'd also use more consistent pieces, say 3.5" strips for each of the rows. It's been fast and fun for me. Here's a link to the thread should take you to page 44 (I hope!): https://www.quiltingboard.com/quilti...301821-44.html I have a lot of thoughts about how I started the project before that (starts post 989) but that shows my pre-trimmed blocks and there is a summary shortly after that of what I've done/found out so far. I'm putting the rows together today, here's a shot of the close-to-finished top. Warning! I still say this is "too loud to sleep under". Edit: Although it looks wild, until the blocks were trimmed they were all straight cuts and straight seams. It's been very fast and easy and I've had no problems putting together the skewed bias edges together. |
Put her request in the column headed "My Grandma can do anything".
The one that came to my mind is the one that looks like tulips in a row. Each tulip could be a different color according to her request. There wouldn't be actually "one" in the middle but all over. If you are up to the challenge, how appropriate if you'd do a Grandmother's Flower Garden! But I have a pattern that I made several years ago that is called Quick Granny's Flower Garden that is strips instead of hexies. It was in Quilt Magazine (no date on the pattern that I have) and the design by Marcia Hohn. It is headed The Quilters' Cache but don't know if it is in that online site or not. The plus on this one is that there wouldn't be an up and down as with the tulips in a row. It would be a lot quicker and easier, especially when creating it for a child. |
It sounds like she definitely knows what she wants-ask her to draw and color it for you.
|
I just checked quilter's cache and, yes, the free pattern is there!

I like the idea of having her draw what she wants for you. It may or may not be doable. If not, you could work with her to get her idea into something that works. That yellow and pink flower needs some "fleshing out" to figure out what she's envisioning. If you just say, "I can do that", without really knowing what she expects could result in disappointment.
All that said, MSQC has a charm pack on special today that has all of your colors. That's where I would go to get the color combo that she wants. By that I mean, find a pre-made selection of fabrics that include your granddaughter's preferred colors. It will give you a starting point for the rest of the fabric. Depending on the pattern you choose, you can get a charm pack, a layer cake or a fat quarter bundle. Another thought is to find a panel she likes for the center flower. Fabric.com has a lot of panels. Sometimes Marshall Dry Goods has a good selection of panels. Many panels have free patterns available from the manufacturers. Timeless Treasures has some really nice panels. They have a designer who does lots of very bright floral designs, some of which have panels. Her name is Chong-a Hwang. Here's a link to her fabrics. Of course, there are lots of designers for all the fabric lines. I am familiar with her florals, so suggest what I am familiar with. If you applique, the center flower may be doable that way. If you take her drawing and blow it up, the pieces might be large enough to make the center doable that way. (I'm having trouble thinking of a way to do the center flower other than applique or a panel.) This sounds like a rewarding project. Involving her in the planning process will give you an opportunity to get to know her even better than you do now. It can also be a teaching opportunity where you show her how to plan a project. Good luck. bkay |

I love this one, Irishrose2. :) Iceblossom, your wonky 9patch is so great! It is now on my bucket list. |
Do a flip and sew. Start with a panel in the center and then add co-ordinating fabrics for each round. When you have it big enough, you just have to bind it.

Did you see this feed sack quilt posted today? You'd have to add more colors but this could be perfect. https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...t-t305153.html
