The quilt top started as an experiment with the pattern using some scraps for the zigzag, and a background I was not sure why I ever bought. Wanted to test out the pattern, and fell in love wiith the results

As is, the top measures 40" x 51" - a fairly small start for a queen size quilt. So now what? I want to Zigzag to stay the focal point. I do have many pink, pastels etc batiks. Bought those after seeing the design.

Should I just make a throw size? HELP PLEASE. I am truly at sea over how to proceed.

THANK YOU
JUlie

How about a small border and then another border with your zig zag around that. I like what you have already!

gaigai 06-07-2011 02:08 AM

Can you expand the zig-zag part to about 50 x 60? That and the surrounding applique on all 4 sides, with a plain border will make it a nice queen size. It's very pretty! Good job!

justlooking 06-07-2011 02:55 AM

Beautiful so far!

sueisallaboutquilts 06-07-2011 03:24 AM

I'm not good at designing but that's so pretty!! :)

Painiacs 06-07-2011 03:27 AM

eastermarie 06-07-2011 03:44 AM

Sure is a pretty middle.

Tippy 06-07-2011 04:06 AM

I love it Julie.. very pretty.. if you have enough fabric, how about another row of zigzags all the way around??

I agree! Would do a small blue border, then a border of zig zag then another blue border.

Raggiemom 06-07-2011 06:18 AM

I don't have any suggestions on how to make it queen sized but I think your quilt is beautiful.

nycquilter 06-07-2011 07:10 AM

or, using the same fabrics/colors, add different border designs, until you get the size you want? Like a zig/zag border, then squares or rectangles, then a plain border?

Beachbound 06-07-2011 07:13 AM

I thought of pinwheels in the pinks right away! Another border of the zig zag would be lovely too. It's very pretty, I hope you'll share it when you decide.

Same here. The zigzag is very striking!

wildyard 06-07-2011 07:56 PM

I too see another blue border, a little wider than the first one.. then I see another zigzag border, this time as a cap and base, going the width of the top and bottom and turning each corner down just enough of the side to barely overlap the end of the applique in the first border. Center a small applique flower, leaf and bud to match your other applique on the plain section of this border if you want. Another blue border a little wider, a plain coordinating border and then blue binding.
If I'm going to dream, I might as well dream big, especially since I am not the one doing the work. Smilesssss :D

I agree

Debd 06-08-2011 01:25 AM

I agree with adding more of the zigzag. I also think prairie points would look great on this quilt!

clynns 06-08-2011 01:56 AM

Very nice color combo. I have some fabric close to that and I like your idea. Go for it.

teddysmom 06-08-2011 03:17 AM

I started my very first handpiece/hand quilted shortly before my 70th birthday. It's never too late to start quilting!

Theres no way you can make this into a queensize quilt.
(80 X 110)?
If you just add a border of this or that, thats what it will look like and you won't be satisfied with the end result after all the time you put into the quilt. Put a blue binding on this one, and lay it across the chair/rocker in your bedroom.
Choose a different design for your queensize quilt.
If you really like the colors on this throw, then carry them over into your queensize quilt.

Whatever you do, I love what you've done.

Marvel 06-08-2011 06:29 AM

I see as I read the other posted answers the same idea is evolveing. Add some more of that georgous blue as a border and use more of the triangles. Your quilt is a beautry. I can just see it big size for you bed. I might even make a runner type to cover a lamp table or a dresser scarf. I do get carried away at timeslol.

Very pretty, awesome work!

Deborahlees 06-08-2011 07:08 AM

very pretty, I too see a second blue border, then zigzags, then a third blue border if needed pending size.

Cherokeequilter 06-08-2011 12:12 PM

I really like what you have done, especially with the colors in the middle. What size block did you start with? Also what size did you use for the pinks. Our guild is always looking for fun designs to make charity quilts. This is a great design with so many options in the scrappy area. Thanks for posting. JC

That was my thought.....border it with a non-pieced border, then another border of the same zigzags, then another non-pieced border.....

MaryKatherine 06-08-2011 01:08 PM

LOVE the background!!!!!

purrfectquilts 06-08-2011 02:07 PM

I love what you have done and it will look great as a center (like a medallion) on a large quilt. Just keep going the way you started and make each border, etc. larger. Blue border next to set the frame and then more of your pinks, and applique. Finish with blue binding.

If you measure your bed, then you will know where you need the zig zag rows and where to fill in with the applique.

Another border finish choice could be a "piano key" or "squares" with all the colors you have used in the zig zags and applique.

For what it's worth...just some ideas. I love what you have!!

GramaLaura 06-08-2011 04:57 PM

Gosh your quilt is really pretty!! Why not add another strip of the floral all the way around and bind it off. It will make a beautiful throw :-D

quilterpam 06-08-2011 05:44 PM

I'm in a similar situation with a quilt that I "designed" Good luck

That is what I was picturing. Just keep adding around until it is the right size.

countrycottage 06-08-2011 08:42 PM

I think it's beautiful so far!

auntiehenno 06-08-2011 09:12 PM

This is really a lovely quilt - love colors.

jpthequilter 06-09-2011 07:29 PM

If it is sewed together, make what you have into the center. Then completely surround it by sewing on a border of the zigzag twists, try one, then a second one. (one of them the same color of pinks) then sew an applique vine border all the way around that.
If you want more borders to make it large enough, use strips of pink blocks and/or a strip of plain green.

I hope this gives you some ideas! It is a lovely interesting start!

Really pretty so far. Hope you post pics when you are done.
