I also sew by a window but, I put my sewing machine cover on after I use it and I put my threads away in storage bins. I love the fresh air while sewing.

Don't have a window here. BrendaK

My sewing machine faces a north facing window but it is set back about 20 inches away from the glass and the window is well-shaded from outside. I've been sewing there for many years and have never had a problem. My machine is fine but I never leave fabric in the machine anyway so I don't know about that. I do know that sunlight will bleach fabric over time. Even in a well-lit room away from windows it's important to re-fold fabric from time to time or keep it covered. Otherwise, you find yourself cutting around bleached out strips. (Been there.)

I don't think I have any direct sunlight to fade colors. I haven't had a problem so far and wouldn't give up my window view.

My sewing table is at right angles to a west window. A metal awning over the window along with low E glass keeps the room comfortably bright but not blinding. By the time the sun gets low enough to sneak under the awning, it's blocked by the house next door.

I have blinds at my window where one of my machines sets and I keep them closed when I'm not in the room. My oldest machine has been in front of a window for 38 years now.(in all four houses) I "have" to have windows with my machine and my kitchen sink. But I have a shady yard and so my room gets just light and not glare.

I have my machine in front of a window, but we have solar screens (live in NV) and shutters. I also cover my machine when it's not in use.

I have the sun-block film and wooden blinds on my windows. Also keep them semi-closed in the afternoon sun. I need that extra light coming in front of my machine. At night I have two lamps on at my machine.

My machine is near a corner of windows but they have plantation blinds on them. When the afternoon sun comes in the one window I adjust the blinds so that the sun is shielded somewhat just because of the fadeing and such. I also have my cutting mats under the window. I usually never lift the blinds completely.

I love sewing in front of my window. That way I can keep an eye on my neighbors...my friend, calls me "Mrs. Cravitz"!! (remember the nosey neighbor on the tv show Bewitched??)LOL
