Suprise new machine for me!

My Birthday and Mothers day were one day apart this year. I'll admit that I was feeling a bit down about things. Yesterday DH and I drove into Sioux Falls to pick up some items, and while we were there I wanted to stop at my LA dealer to get some thread. It's a small family owned shop, and they know us by site. We walked in the door and I jokingly said to Ben, "I'm in the mood to buy something, what have you got?"

He smiled and said "Good, I'm in the mood to sell something!" He knows I've been toying around with the idea of an embroidery machine for some time, and he wanted to move out his Destiny display model to make room for the new Destiny II. And while he was showing me it, another friend came in (she does LA work for hire) and DH and her got to chatting. He told me this afterwards - he was talking to her about how I'd probably never use one as I prefer quilting. And she went on to tell him about all the things a quilter can do with an embroidery machine to enhance the quilt. After all - she sees a lot of it. She told my husband that at my level of sewing, the embroidery machine is worth getting.

DH, once he gets his mind around buying something, always likes to go for the best. Ben gave us a great deal on the Destiny, including the upgrade kit (though he has to order one it for us). I've been reading the manual, and today I'm going to do some sewing. I have a Juki2010 for my piecing, but my "main" sewing machine is 35 years old, and it was the top of the line Viking when I bought it. So it's been a long time since I've upgraded my main sewing machine.

Happy sewing

I own over 150 vintage machines, and find they run the gamit just like new machines. Some are built well and do a good job, and some weren't worth much when they were new. I think vintage machines are way better than most lower end new machines. I have my collection for historical reasons, but love the newer features my machine has for actual sewing.

There was a time I thought I'd love to get good at doing free motion embroidery and cut work with a Singer 15. I even have vintage books that teach how to do it. but I have to be realistic that time is the one thing I don't have a lot of, and doing things that way takes a lot of time to develop the physical skills. With all the abilities of this new machine, I can be creative and have a lot of fun a lot quicker.

A new machine is the perfect thing to lift your spirits! Congratulations!

Quilter 53 05-27-2017 07:49 AM

Macybaby, I've been reading your posts for awhile now, and I've just got to say that your DH is a treasure!! Congrats on the new embroidery machine. I, too just purchased an older model Pfaff to learn embroidery and embellish my quilts, but have been so busy with another project that I haven't had the time to do much with it. The price was too good to pass up even though I knew it would be awhile before I could play with it. I only see one problem....How do you top that come Father's Day? LOL

catsden 05-27-2017 08:43 AM

Congratulations on your new machine.

Daylesewblessed 05-27-2017 08:59 AM

Congratulations not only on the new machine, but also on having a very special husband who would buy his wife a new machine when she already has such a large collection!

zozee 05-27-2017 09:10 AM

Kudoes to your husband, and to the LA friend/customer who "just happened" to be in the store when your DH needed to be persuaded of a good thing. I'm sure you both feel delighted about the purchase (as does the seller, of course)!
Have fun, and happy belated birthday and Mother's Day. Can we see a picture of your new toy?

Boston1954 05-27-2017 11:30 AM

I bet you smiled all the way home. That is a great present.

JustAbitCrazy 05-27-2017 03:18 PM

What a great machine! Congratulations and have fun with her!

Barb in Louisiana 05-27-2017 03:52 PM

Congratulations!!!! I know you will enjoy it. Don't do like a lot of people and get rid of your older machine. Sometimes you need 2, or 3 or 4. And the Destiny is really heavy and not very portable for a gal. Do I have one??? Not yet, but still hoping. My 2 girlfriends love theirs.

Jingle 05-27-2017 06:30 PM

Good for you to get a new machine.

jmoore 05-28-2017 02:57 AM

Congratulations...you deserve it. I don't have any personal experience with the Destiny, but I hear wonderful things about it. I'm sure you will get hours of enjoyment with your new machine.

Watson 05-28-2017 03:11 AM

Congratulations!!! And, Happy Birthday!

congrats on your new machine

sewvicki 05-28-2017 03:37 AM

I have a Destiny with the upgrade (which makes it a Destiny 2). I absolutely love this machine. You are going to be amazed and what it does. I have been creating vinyl notebook covers recently. Who would have thunk it? Enjoy your new baby. And...Happy Birthday!

maviskw 05-28-2017 03:55 AM

Congratulations! Are you going to put that into your Machine Shed. From the pictures I've seen of that, there isn't much room in there anymore. Maybe you need to add on!

oksewglad 05-28-2017 04:07 AM

What a great sewing excursion....enjoy...

Joset 05-28-2017 04:13 AM

Happy Belated birthday and enjoy fantastic gift. you deserve it

Rhonda K 05-28-2017 04:46 AM

Congrats on your new machine. You will love all the features on it. Enjoy!

Macybaby 05-28-2017 05:16 AM

Here is a picture - I've gotten as far as doing a few inches of straight stitching.

The upgrade was included in the price, though the dealer has to order it in for me.

This is such a "culture shock" for me since the last time I bought a brand new sewing machine to be my "main" machine was 1980. I am "technology challenged". I've had the same smart phone for 5 years and have not figured it out (if I need to do something different, I call my son and ask him) I don't know how to use our TV (DH has to) and I've never even figured out the new dishwasher.

I've watched a few videos, and want to take out my "crazy quilt" that I've not worked on in about 8 months and play with decorative stitches.

callen 05-28-2017 05:25 AM

Wow, that is one way to perk up your spirits, for sure. I remember 10 years ago, my DH & I were going to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary & he (secretly) wanted to get me a 1 carat diamond ring. Our daughter told him "I don't think Mom would want a ring". When he finally spilled the beans, I said the same thing but added "I would like
a top of the line sewing/embroidery machine" & that's what I got. My friends thought I was nuts but that's what made me happy & that's all that matters. Good luck with your new machine.

QuiltMom2 05-28-2017 05:47 AM

I've enjoyed your posts for a long time and I always like to see a machine used, whether it's a vintage look-at-and-wonder why on earth? or a new top-of the line. Your husband must be a smart man (he married you!) and that's one Destiny that will give you sewing pleasure for many years to come.

Wintersewer 05-28-2017 05:48 AM

I agree, I love old machines, but for making things I much prefer a good quality new one. There is also no comparison between a new plastic Walmart machine and a new Bernina, Janome, or Viking.

Wow! Your new machine is beautiful! Congrats & Happy Birthday!

red-warrior 05-28-2017 06:41 AM

Happy for you and can't wait to see what you make!

Innov8R 05-28-2017 08:31 AM

Congrats on the new machine. I already had a Juki 2010Q that I totally love, butI took the plunge in January and bought the Janome Horizon MC14000 with quilting in mind. I completely quilted a twin-sized quilt for my DGD for the first time and finished it this week (posted the picture on the QB). I, too, have not been able to FMQ to the level that I want, and the embroidery machine really changed that for me. The embroidery machine concept works extremely well. If I can be of any help, you can PM me. I wish you the joy of seeing your pieced quilts soar to new heights with your new machine. Your DH is a treasure. I know because I have lived 46 years with an absolute treasure!

sJens 05-28-2017 09:39 AM

Have fun with your embroidery machine.

salederer 05-28-2017 09:54 AM

Wow, lucky you. That is some machine!

barny 05-28-2017 11:57 AM

Good for you! We have to try everything. You are very creative, and your Hubby knows it. He is very
good too.

nstitches4u 05-28-2017 01:55 PM

You will love the Destiny!. I have a Destiny upgraded to Destiny II. You will be amazed at what this machine can do. I too am a quilter, but I use a lot of embroidered blocks in my quilts. Have fun with you new baby.

Lyncat 05-28-2017 01:56 PM

When I got my Ellisimo Gold after sewing on my vintage machines, I was a little scared of it, but after a few years, I love it!! You'll enjoy it a lot!

Jeanette Frantz 05-28-2017 09:38 PM

Congratulations! Happy Belated Birthday! Wonderful machine!
