t shirt quilts

What kind of stabilizer do you use when making a T-shirt quilt? When you get it all put together can you quilt on top of the design? I am pondering and doing some research before starting one. Thanks for any advice.

I like to use a non woven Pelon. I get it on sale at Joann's Fabrics for 99 cents a yard. I like the lightweight kind. I use steam to press it on. I want to make sure that it is fused really good before I cut the blocks.

I had the same question earlier this year and the quiltingboard gave me a lot of good advice in this thread:

I have always used pellon #911, I use a wet cloth to really get a strong fuse to the shirt fabric. I sew over the letters and pictures with no trouble..unless there is some heavy picture..

I usually use the pellon sheer weight

I have had a t-shirt quilt pieced and sandwiched for about a month...the trouble I'm having is deciding on how to quilt the darn thing.

I use 100% cotton woven stabilizer. It's very light and when you have the quilt finished and wash it, you don't even know it's there. Love it.

I used Bosal 312 featherweight interfacing. You can get it from your LQS or order from this site:

I've made 10 t-shirt quilts and have used Pellon 911 for all of them. I pick up up about 10 yards at a time when JoAnn has a 99-cent sale on it. One of the only things I ever buy at JoAnn's. Easy to quilt the top once it's done.

ditto for me--the Pellon finest possible--as far as quilting through the logos on the t-shirts--depends! I try to avoid going through the logos if possible by going around the logos. I quilt on a long arm, and never go through those big plastic ones--it causes drag on the needle too much, plus you can not take out stitches successfully.
For cutting shirts--I first whack off the neck & sleeves, then once I've figured out the design, I do a rough cut of approximate size and stablize, then cut a 3rd time with exact measurements. Good luck! Just agreed today to do a donation t-shirt quilt for the local high school band who is going to the Rose Bowl next year.
