I would say "no" to an overhang. |
OCtagon (eight-sided) might be another shape to consider.

A short and fitted overhang (think fitted bed sham) could be really useful and could not slide off. Could be really tricky to make though. Otherwise no overhang!

I would do a Swirling Stars - Card Trick table topper (free pattern). Here's one of mine (I've done 4).

How about a hexagon shaped one. Connecting threads has a new table topper pattern that is nice. http://www.connectingthreads.com/pat...n__D55733.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbmjFsusdQo I made this one a couple of years ago. I used the small size for placemats and the large for table topper. The placemats are a little small so I'll use the medium next time. I also made a set for my DDs round table and she loves them. |
Okay, I Googled because I absolutely had to have that card trick pattern - LOVE LOVE!! Here it is:

I am working on one right now that is by Fig Tree & Co. called Blossoms and Jam. Really cute. Round with scalloped edge.
