I use poly felt in wallhangings and table toppers. It's completely washable, doesn't shrink and comes in 72" widths. It is stiffer than batting. I also use it for the batting and backing in quilted rugs.

I use Hobbs 80/20 and really like the look. It is meant to be decorative. I am not concerned about setting hot dishes on them because my table has heavy pads on it that is meant to protect the table. They were custom made for the table sections. The table toppers wash nicely just in case there is a spill.

I have used flannel, but it does not show the quilting design very well.

I used cotton batting so the table is protected. Just have to be careful not to set your wine glass or the salt shaker right on the edge.

Flannel. Simple. Easy. Works!

I use Warm and Natural no problems or complaints.

If you want a table topper thinner, you could use dressmaking pellon. Pellon helps items keep their shape. It comes in different weights, and has a fusible option, so lots of choices there to get what you might be looking for.
A thinner top automatically loses the relief of the quilting and some insulating properties. I suppose it just depends on what look and use you are going for. From the comments, I see people are using table toppers for various reasons... I made a placemat using an old piece of 100% polyester batting. I didn't like the thickness of it because it seemed like a plate was okay but a glass of milk seemed tippy and not stable. I used a really hot dry iron and fused the inner batting to itself and the result was a smooth flat placemat. I thought, "Wow, that worked out really neat!" |

I use Warm & Natural in mine and they come out great! Even when I stitch leftover pieces from other projects together! It's fairly thin so drapes well, just like a quilt!
