Table topper question.
 

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Not sure why you want to double it up, I’ve used flannel many times as the ( batting) in table runners and placemats, but have never used more than one layer. Just prewash the flannel so it doesn’t shrink/ distort the runner.

Ckcowl, Thank you so much. I had totally forgotten to wash and dry it. Duh! I will do that now and use only one layer. My thought was whether or not it would be too thin for one layer.

Just be sure to wash it/dry it twice before using it. Then I think it will be fine.

I'm another who likes flannelette as batting for runners and mini-quilts.
Yes, definitely, make sure you hot wash and hot dry to shrink it well.
Actually, I usually do it at least two times.
One or two layers, just depending on what I am wanting for my finished quilt.
Flannelette can also be quite nice in a bed quilt, if you want one a little lighter.
Yet it can still be nice and cozy, with a lovely drape. I consider mine as a "summer quilt".

For your runners .... one layer is enough to do the job.
However, if you are wanting more padding for protection from heat or mositure, then more layers.

It really depends on how thick and bulky you want your finished quilt to be.
Also, there are different flannel weights to factor in. And how much quilting you will do.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be .....
..... to make your first with one layer, and see if you are pleased.
Then decide if the next should have two layers, or you stick with the one for it too.

Cream-colored flannel also makes a great design wall cover.

I washed and dried the flannel and then used two layers in it. I will launder the finished toppernafternindonthe finding and see how I like it. Thank you for your advice, it is always a help.

I found a thin, white baby blanket in Mother’s cedar chest and I suspicions it was mine. I’ve used it as batting for 3 table runners.

I think 1 layer would work fine but like everyone else said you need to wash and dry it a couple of times. Also, I agree with "Lee in Richmond" that the flannel would work great for a design wall if you are in need of one and it sounds like you have plenty. I covered my design wall of foam core with flannel and it works good.
