Did you ever wake up knowing you SHOULD go to work but you felt like you needed a mental health day off? Well, I am doing it today! I called in saying I had the flu (yes, a lie!). I am having coffee, looking on the quilt board then I am going to stitch until my eyes are crossed!

PamB8s 05-16-2011 03:15 AM

My husband is calling in sick today, said he just needs to sit in front of the tv and maybe clean a couple of guns. When he calls in (he works for a small company) he tells his boss that he has a brain tumor but it will be better tomorrow. So enjoy your day, drink coffee, and quilt. Life's too short. Many blessings to you :)

Sassylass 05-16-2011 03:16 AM

Way to go!!! Nice to have a me day once in a while. Do you have a project in mind?

Enjoy yuor day!!!

Would love to do just that today! Wondering if I have to watch my GS with his dad not being able to work outside with all this rain we've been having. Getting ready for a day of quilting if he is called off and will love every minute of it.

My DDIL calls them Mental Health days. I don't work outside the home any more and still have Mental Health days  Good for You :!:

ckcowl 05-16-2011 04:18 AM

i have on occassion taken a *me- quilting day* - not too often--i'm a worrier---always think if i lie today and say i'm sick--tomorrow i really will be=
so i don't lie about it i just decide in advance i want(need) a day- and i make the necessary arrangements- even if it just means calling the boss and saying--i really need a day...they do not ask for details- and i do not take advantage.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-16-2011 04:20 AM

I hope you have a wonderful day!!! It's good for the soul :)

cherylynne 05-16-2011 04:42 AM

Sounds like a good plan. Dreary days are wonderful quilting days. With the flue you might need more than one day to recover, though.

QuiltnNan 05-16-2011 05:51 AM

No, never called in sick just to play. I guess I was just a goody-2-shoes. I had perfect attendance for 9 of my 20 years at one company. And the only time I missed in high school was when I got the mumps. I have really been blessed with fairly good health.

emerald46 05-16-2011 05:55 AM

I believe in Mental Healths Day..even as a retired stay at home volunteer. You just gotta take care of yourself sometimes!

BellaBoo 05-16-2011 06:18 AM

Yes! I would use most of my personal days to quilt or go to workshops/classes.

Companies still have sick days? Most all companies have gone to personal days to use as you want. It frees the employee from stress about using a sick day when not sick. It is ridiculous to have the employee need a day off and have to fib about being sick to get it.

Dreary days are great for quilting days.
And stormy days, nothing better.
Too hot to go outside days, I seek refuge in my sewing room (no a/c though a very cool basement)
Snowy wintry days, are made better quilting.
Then there are the foggy days
And ..........

Come to think of it, every day can be made better sitting and sewing! :)

gramarraine 05-16-2011 06:53 AM

I never took off a day when I wasn't really sick unless it was a personal day. I was always afraid the company would send someone to check on me. I had a friend that took a well day off every month to just do what she wanted.

As a supervisor in a law office, I guess I have a different take on this. We have a small staff and it makes it harder on coworkers when someone calls off. Scheduling a day off is different since we can plan in advance for it. Like I said, just a different opinion.

Linda

MellieKQuilter 05-16-2011 07:39 AM

YES YES YES!! :)

Conniequilts 05-16-2011 07:46 AM

I WILL be doing that this summer. Hubby's golf season officially started. I see several Thursday's in my future where I just won't feel well enough to go in :)

Oh, what a boring world we would live in if we all had the exact same opinion!

I haven't called in sick to play, but I have definitely scheduled mental health days in advance to do something fun.

Cheers, K

Mental Health days are essential, and you have to use them to DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT!!!   Have fun!

quilterella 05-17-2011 02:24 AM

I used to do this, and if I was in the midst of a really great project, I'd tell them I had a chest infection (automatic 3 days off), but, if I just wanted the one day, I would call-in with a headache. The only problem with "sick days" was you didn't get paid for them. Now that I'm retired, I quilt everyday, for as long as I want.

wolfkitty 05-17-2011 02:46 AM

All businesses should allow Mental Health days, but the places that need to supply them the most are the least likely to do so.

wvdek 05-17-2011 02:52 AM

We all need mental health days. Enjoy your day but make sure you get off of here and get some sewing done :}

jitkaau 05-17-2011 03:28 AM

Never. I took 14.5 days off in 35 years of working - because I was sick or seeing a specialist doctor. Now I think it is probably why I am falling to pieces rather rapidly since I retired (from too much burn-out...).

mshollysd 05-17-2011 04:03 AM

I would love to take a mental health day but my department is different too. I have one back up and when either one of us are out it tends to leave a lot on the other's plate. Of course she just got back from 8 weeks on maternity leave so I am due for a vacation day and/or mental health day.....LOL

kaykwilts 05-17-2011 04:06 AM

I used to wish, sometimes, so badly that I could be sick so I could have an "excuse" just to stop....I loved, loved, loved those six weeks after a baby was born cause I could tell everyone that "I can't, I just had a baby"...and not feel guilty. Now, I really am sick...with CFS and Fibro....and longingly remember the days when I felt so good all the time.

Be careful what you wish for........

mshollysd 05-17-2011 04:09 AM

I am so sorry Kaykwilts. I will appreciate everyday I am going to work, until i Retire and then I won't feel guilty.

michelehuston 05-17-2011 04:14 AM

I was actually contemplating skipping my tax class today. Just can't seem to get motivated, but i will bet if I decided to quilt all day I would find the motivation!!

Ann L 05-17-2011 04:16 AM

Sure wanted to today! Gloomy here in NC and raining. I have a horrible cold and sewing and tea sounds like the right medicine to me but..... I didn't.

JulieR 05-17-2011 04:20 AM

Fortunately my company has gone to personal days and my department is all about work-life balance. Probably because we're all workaholics and nobody has any balance. LOL!

It's extremely rare for me to take an unplanned day off, and when I do I make sure I really can just be FREE to do as I please. I can't tell you the last time I had a day off when I didn't at least check emails at work, but I can say that yesterday I didn't answer any. This is an improvement.

And I QUILTED!!!

mshollysd 05-17-2011 04:28 AM

Good for you. I took last Thursday afternoon as a vacation time but didn't get to quilt. Took an hour for physical therapy and 3 hours in a dentist chair.

kohenry 05-17-2011 04:30 AM

Excellent . . . enjoy your day!

ILOVECOLORS 05-17-2011 04:41 AM

I had to leave work for a doctor's appointment when a friend called and was in town same day as a sewing expo. Change of plan - take the day off, cancel the doctor appt, go to the sewing expo. I got better real fast.

Helovesme 05-17-2011 04:58 AM

I fantasize about actually doing this...

maryb119 05-17-2011 05:04 AM

Where my DH works, they require a doctor's excuse for a sick day. That takes the fun out of it!

raedar63 05-17-2011 05:25 AM

I think about it every day but don't. Not saying I havn't . Due to this type of practice too often by staff the hospital I work for changed the policy. Now the first two days that one calls in sick gets paid out of your vacation time which is very difficult to accumulate and keep due to being put on call for low census. So even though I think about it I can't do it because I feel guilty causing the other nurses to take twice the workload and the fact that I want to hold onto every minute of vacation time I can get so I get a paycheck on the days I get put on call for low census :(
Enjoy it while you can lol,I sure could use a mental health MONTH lol

QuiltNama 05-17-2011 05:58 AM

Many years ago my husband & I both called in a sick day and spent the day running around together. Stopped in a place to eat lunch that was highly recommended, and guess what! We both ended up with food poisoning. So...ended up with several unexpected call in days. Both of us still laugh about our sick days and try to schedule personal or vacation days so there is no more guilt or as the kids call it "just desserts"
Brenda

pjemark 05-17-2011 06:09 AM

Yes yes yes I have. And it is just so gloriously wonderful! Thank goodness my machine isn't in my home. It's in my office in town- so I go there and no one bothers me and I just sew sew sew. I love it- I'm wrapped up in my own little world with not a care. I work a lot of hours so I don't get this very often. It tends to run in spurts (such as, I did it yesterday and I think I'm gonna do it today also!) Normally it's an hour here, thirty minutes there. I'll never, ever understand how anyone could possibly be bored in retirement. I can't wait. There are so many great things to do (such as sew!)
