*jumping up and down excitedly*

There is a lot of talk and most of the time I hear that people are intimidated by this, so I thought that I would see if I could take the fear out of it, it really is simple when you see how it all works and goes together. the sewing isn't hard part at all.

bailey 01-26-2010 01:03 PM

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I have fabric that I hope will work and now will have visual aid as well. This will be my third quilt. First one was 20 some years ago (a log cabin) and one that is almost done I am working on now ( a variation of irish chain) and can't wait to start OBW!

Love looking at all the fabric choices. I can see where one could get addicted at least to cutting out the pieces and laying them together to see what you've got. Actually sewing and finishing is another story. LOL I am really good at starting but no so much finishing.

Bailey

Do we need the mirrors and any special rulers for this? I did a Stack n Whack once, but don't remember using any special tools.

missgigglewings 01-26-2010 02:01 PM

Hey Cutebuns...Now see what you did?? I am off to look thru my stash for fabric that might work for this. Its something new for me if I do. But I am soooo busy...I don't know if I can keep up. I gotta find mirrors too. On me, Oh my, see what you have done.....I am totally out of control!!

Oh yeah...when does this start?

cutebuns 01-26-2010 02:02 PM

You don't need the mirrors, some times it makes it easier to pick out fabric, but not by any means essential,

And if you have a straight ruler that has the 60 degree line on it you are good to go there as well, the special ruler can just make cutting the triangles easier. That is all

The piecing can go very quickly for this, you figure that there isn't many seams, to start with you only do 4 per block.

Also, I want to thank you so much for taking the time to do this with us. I've been wanting to do this for a while, now I will have the umpf to go ahead. I really appreciate it! I did do a stack and whack. Isn't this close to that.

I love the birds too.

Barb_MO 01-26-2010 02:25 PM

Cutebuns, I have a the mirror but find it disappointing when I actually cut my fabric because the mirror shows a mirror image. In actuality if I have a certain flower on the left, it will be on the left on each pierce. So I don't really get the pattern I thought i would.

cutebuns 01-26-2010 02:45 PM

I have never used the mirror. but that makes sense. for some it gives a good idea on what they are looking for, I think it is also better for the klaidascope as well as they are fussy cut.

Esqmommy 01-26-2010 05:30 PM

Wait...I just found this tonight...has it started already, or are we just talking about fabric choices????

cutebuns 01-26-2010 05:33 PM

We are talking fabric at the moment still.

Esqmommy 01-26-2010 05:35 PM

Okay, I think I get it now. Every Monday will be a new post, right?

cutebuns 01-26-2010 05:38 PM

Yes, Mondays will be the next step. I am not sure yet how many it will take to get it done, not that many really, We are going to lay out and cut so I hope by them we have everyone with their fabric.

Esqmommy 01-26-2010 05:41 PM

I'm going to an all day (1-10) sewing session on Friday at my LQS (PittsburgPam is going too!!!) and I'll see if i can't find something then! I have an idea...just need to find the right fabric.

cutebuns 01-26-2010 06:15 PM

Great!!!!! I want to see everyones so bad. They are so much fun. And even if two people end up with the same fabric they will still end up with differnt blocks. Especialy if they cut differnt sizes.

OK..I found some really pretty butterfly fabric...What size block would I cut for this? It looks beautiful in my put-to-gether mirrors
It looks like a 15 inch repeat.

um.. Cutebuns?....Are you any relation to my son/ His girlfriend use to call him Puppybuns!

With my mom's help I did get this image

I think you'd get some really neat blocks with the raspberries and birds fabric. Think of the areas of brown and tan VS the pink fruit and green leaves.

If your repeat section is less thn 12" long, you might want to go with 12 repeats instead of 6. Then you'll have more strips to work with to make your triangles from.
I use my hinged mirror to look at my fabric to decide how wide a strip to cut. Hold it on the fabric so the hinged corner is 3" from the cut edge, then move it so it's maybe 3 1/2" from the cut edge. You can then see the size of the hexagon you'll be working with in the miror. If the main shapes are smaller, like 3" tall birds, you'll probably want to go with strips that are 3 - 3 1/2" wide. If the main shapes are larger, you can go with a wider strip. Just remember that your hexagon will be twice the width of your strip when pieced together.

Sorry, that was a quick look at the fabric and I thought the pink flowers were raspberries.

It looks like the butterflies are around 3" across. I wouldn't go any wider than 3 1/2" wide cut strips.

fireworkslover 01-26-2010 08:46 PM

Yes, that's a gorgeous print. It should turn out very neat. I made a OBW with a tropical bird print that had many of the same colors in it, titled: "Parrots, Toucans, Macaws, Oh My!". Think of all the colors in those birds plus green foliage. Fabric that has more than 10 colors does work. Having a swirling printed background instead of a solid color background makes for a better result as well.

Geez, that fabric looks familiar. I think I have some of that! Bought w/ a OBW in mind too!

billswife99 01-26-2010 09:24 PM

Those butterflies are awesome! We have to know the name of that one please!

cutebuns 01-26-2010 09:36 PM

For the butterflies I would go with 2 3/4, 3 1/4, 3 1/2. No bigger I think it will make some really interesting blocs for sure!

OK, so I pulled out my OBW WIP, all it needs is quilting and binding, the two things I am scared of lol. Also took pics of my next fabric for OBW throw size... I only have the first book, so I don't know how to do the cubes, but they look awesome and I might have to figure it out!

P.S. The WIP really needs to be ironed again, it has been rolled for about a year after being sandwiched!

Ok, here are teh pics of the newest fab choice, it has roughly a 14" repeat, I played around with the mirror a bit to show what the blocks could end up like :)

I am so sorry....When I purchase fabric for my stash I wash it, iron it, cut off the selvedge, fold it and stack it! My daughter says I am OCD! I just like things nice and neat and ready for use!

I did buy it at Hancocks in the fall. Hope that helps!

cutebuns 01-27-2010 07:04 AM

You are welcome, We had been talking about it for a while. And so I though that I would jump in and go for it. I have done a few of them and had fun, it is one that I am happy to do more than once,

deranged_damsel 01-27-2010 07:18 AM

thanks for this post Cutebuns,
I will be following it anxiously!!! how well do you think a stripe would work?
I saw a post where it wasnt a hex, but a star and thought that looked amazing also.

Mousie 01-27-2010 07:18 AM

wow, Cutie, you have six pages here in this thread already!
I want to try to dabble some with the OBW's, but I had no clue about the fabrics.
I am good about gathering info and then either being too busy to stop and read...or zzzz when i do.
So anyway, I need to go eat, but will def. come back to this thread later today. Thanks a heap, my friend! :-D

Mousie 01-27-2010 07:19 AM

Gosh, Denise, that is so beautiful that I'll bet you hate to cut it! Do you know the fabric name and manufacturer? It reminds me so much of the Texas Gulf Coast where I grew up. :D

Esqmommy 01-27-2010 04:29 PM

Got my fabric..will post pix later. I'm excited!

Yes it is beautiful and it is kind of hard to cut it but when I look with the mirrors it should be very pretty.

the salvage says Blank Textiles PATT#BTR 3962 there isn't a name of print or designer. I think it may old the store I got it from last year they tend to carry older fabric

k3n 01-28-2010 12:23 AM

Hi Denise - no, I don't think that will be OK....

I think it will be BEAUTIFUL!!! :-D
