Teenage boy quilt Help!!!
I gave my grand daughter a pretty purple quilt made in the turkey tracks pattern for Christmas. When my grand son saw it, he immediately wanted a quilt. So, we discussed what he might like. I thought about using a panel with a "manly" theme. But, not quite sure since he doesn't hunt or fish like the rest of the boys in our family. He's more into computers and games. So, what kind of pattern would you make for a teenage boy? Something geometric or wild looking? Maybe a Labrinth Walk? Help!!!

A star quilt. Or find out if he has a favorite color and make a sampler of blocks or rows you thing he would like. A high contrast two color quilt may be something he would like.

A QR code quilt? My son (s) thinks they are neat.

Have you seen the new MSQC Skate Board quilt Tutorial on You Tube?
I am making my 18 year old son a red white and black quilt using a pattern called Jungle Fever. He chose the colours and the pattern (there was on made up in my LQS.) It is a fairly easy quite that uses 10 inch squares (I cut my own). You stack up 3 different ones then cut them up and shift each pile top to the bottom etc, and sew them back together again. There are 5 different cutting layouts. I have about 18 different fabrics I am using. I was going to make a disappearing 9 or 4 patch, but am enjoying this project. I am mostly a beginner quilter, with only about 3 quilts (one completed) under my belt (and three rag quilts). My son is a nerd he would not have wanted a 'manly' quilt with a outdoors theme. He did look at a labyrinth quilt in a different LQS, but he said he would not feel comfortable looking at it. No where for his eyes to settle. If your grandson likes Dr. Who there are quite a few Tardis patterns. If he likes Nintendo you can find Mario quilt patterns too. |
I'm working on a third quilt for my 16 year old DS. The first 2 were made with his high school colors and mascot. This one he designed, it is blackboards with complex math equations, then the border will have pi appliqued around it. I figured it would go about 70 places. Find out what he would like most. I love the idea of making the QR code quilt. There are lots of places on the internet to create your QR code.

how about one like this... someone posted free patterns in Links and Resources.

I used Spiderman fabrics and made Warm Wishes for my grandson. He loves it.

I have also seen some great "guy" quilts on pinterest using Greys in various shades and oranges. And, they are stunning. (Simple patterns from triangles to chevrons.) I hope you have fun. I'm sure when you find the right path you will come up with a great quilt. What a wonderful compliment that your grandson is requesting one of your creations. |
I know boys are hard to make & buy for! I have 2 DGS. I'm making all my DGK graduation quilts. #1 DGS will graduate this May & his bro will graduate in 2016. I already have a lot of blocks for him.
Idea: I have been & am in some block swaps. I have asked before for star blocks but now am asking for "girly" blocks (for my 5 DGDs. Have #1's top done for this May but still have to get back together). Had to think & think about the boys. Finally went stars & misc blocks. The turkey track, for example. There are soooo many blocks to choose from... One day I will post a pic. |

He LIKED your gd's quilt. Make him a turkey track one with his own colors and may switch up the tracks a wee bit. There is mothing girly about turkey tracks. Dont overthink this.

How about a cool 3-D pattern? Check out ABC 3-D Tumbling Blocks and More, by Marci Baker. She has some techno looking designs that are very man friendly. I also like the idea that you had with the labyrinth walk pattern, which is also 3-D looking.

When I think of quilts for boys or males, I think of more linear-type patterns- log cabin, rail fence, warm wishes. Or more "blocky" type patterns- turning twenty, D9P for example. There are so many nice grey & neutral fabrics out now that would make nice quilts for guys.

Either search for some fabric that has computer stuff on it or see if he would like the new skateboard pattern form MSQC.

You could ask him if he liked this pattern and if he does - ask him for some colr preferences. He might also like purple - the color has been associatd with royalty (and the minnesota vikings football team). I think purple and gray, purple and gold, purple with black and white are possible combinations. I like purple and red or orange -but the RedHat groups have claimed the red/purple combo. Some sunsets have those colors in them. |
I was struggling with a similar dilemma this summer. I wanted to make a quilt for my son to take to college. The quilt could not be outdoorsy, sports, or dark colors. He is not at all into anything "manly". He's more the creative, drama, music type. He loves bright colors like hot pink, lime green, purple and orange. He didn't want a theme. Every fabric I put together looked too girly. He told me to stop looking at color as gender. I finally decided on a string quilt, which I'm still working on. I love the QR code idea. I found some "geek" fabric that I'm adding to my quilt that would make a really cool guy theme quilt. It has formulas, pi, mobius strips, double helix, etc. - would be a cool Big Bang Theory quilt.

I made one of my grandsons a triple Irish Chain quilt using his school colors and a basketball print for the background fabric. Using the basketball print for the background fabric made the quilt look like it was for a boy and showed the basketballs very nicely. Could you find some fabric with computers on it? Just a thought. I'm sure anything you decide upon will be great.

Maybe you can taking him shopping for the fabric he likes. I made my grandson a D9P out of space fabric he liked.
|
How about an illusion with bold colors on a black background that make it look like it's floating. Storm at Sea would also be a good one. I agree with amber1957, take him shopping. He may even want to help make it. Or have him sit with you infront of the computer and check out the different patterns.

What yobro said! Or just ask him. Hand him a couple of quilt books and ask him to pick one out. I really like the Labyrinth Walk pattern too. I would just ask him. Seems to me if he never displayed any interest at all until he saw GD quilt, I would make him part of the process. Ask him his favorite colors and let him pick out the pattern. |
Here's a free pattern that is a suggestion. While it is done in fireman print, you could have him select prints to work up in a modern look that he would like colors, prints of his choice....http://www.blankquilting.com/media/u...14_fKv5Vwc.pdf Good luck in whatever you decide. Be sure to show the end result once it's made.

What about a Trip Around the World - done in masculine colors? I created this one (3rd quilt in link) for my college nephew)

Boy quilts are hard. I made one of my sons a quilt using his school colors and chambry. When my de facto grandson graduated from high school, I made a QR quilt with his name and the name of his colllege and the year of his granduatio, in his school colors. (I was so excited when it really scanned!!!)

what about a pixel quilt if he is into gaming he might like one. Google mario quilt, zelda and you should get an idea of what they are. If you add the word images you will also get pictures of lots of them..i will see if i can add a linkhttp://cuttopieces.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/super-mario-brothers-quilt-along.html
I am just in the process of making my 25 tear old son one. |

I wondered also, and since no one volunteered the answer, I googled it. It stands for Quick Response Code, and it looked like a bar code to me. There was a big group of quilts called QR code quilts to look at. I love learning something new! Dina |

I made this quilt for our man cave. My two teenage sons enjoy it. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...sy-t75757.html

Don't know how you feel about curves, but this guy makes it seem easy enough. And he makes a very "male" quilt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJvnKfqopF0

As a middle/high school teacher I would suggest not using "computer themed fabric"- what is trending in technology changes so quickly it would be an "old school quilt" within a year:rolleyes:. If he isn't the shopping type, to go look at fabric- are there websites you like to order from? There are several good ones he could look at that would solve the fabric choices, and that will lead you to the right pattern choice.
|
Labrinth is a good choice, Carpenters Star or if he is young enough or just "geeky" enough Mind Craft (computer game my grands spend wayyyyyyy to much time playing ) Last, thought a puzzle quilt or anything that is strongly geometrical. O I just remembered one I was considering for a teen boy, tessellations.
|
I was going to suggest the skateboard quilt also....someone beat me to it!!
|
Take him window shopping on the internet to find out what types of patterns and fabrics appeal to him.

depends on his age. for my 13 yr old grdsns, I made a D9P with black as the center block. the uncut squares were 2 browns I alternated. and the '2.5 in strips' were neutral. all kinds of different neutral's. worked great.
|
If he likes games---there Chess fabric and a take 5 pattern would be nice. or maybe use other game fabric also.
|
I had my DGS pick the pattern and colors he wanted for his graduation quilt. He picked Storm at Sea in bright yellow and red. I would never have chosen those fabrics for him. Came out looking good and he loves it.
