Template Plastic

1 Attachment(s)
I was just setting down to cut a plastic template and I thought I would share. I don't cut a lot of templates anymore but sometimes I want to cut a shape with the same repeated motif in the fabric(sharpies onto the plastic shape) like the Dresden Plates that Rhonda does. I use these flexible cutting mats from the kitchen aisle at my $ store. They give me a nice 15 inch by 11 inch sheet of opaque plastic that I can cut with my scissors.

I use those two. I have also used plastic binder available really cheap during back to school sales.

I got 5 packages of those this last summer, for $1 each, I hope they have them next year, I'll be getting some more.

I love using those cutting mats for templates, especially now that xray film is virtually a thing of the past. :)

Boston1954 12-29-2014 05:16 PM

Oh man!! I bought a set of four for the kitchen, and when they did not work out so well, I tossed them. (see Anne hitting self in head)

Becky's Crafts 12-29-2014 06:14 PM

I use those chopping mats as well and find they don't get brittle like the quilting template plastic! I've got some that are three years old and still as pliable as when I first cut them! I get most of mine at a local flea market and sometimes get them at half price. Some come in two packs and some in 3 packs. I buy 8-10 packs at a time to keep on hand as I make a lot of templates.

ontheriver 12-29-2014 09:38 PM

Great idea! I use templates for appliqué pieces only but will have to look for these as the plastic sheets are so much more costly.

Wow....thanks for this hint......back to dollar tree...I love that store...

Template Plastic

Thanks for the template idea. I just bought some plastic for the fabric store which is no where near the size of the cutting matts. Will keep this tip in mind. Thanks.

Annaquilts 12-30-2014 06:48 AM

Thanks for sharing! That is a great idea and savings.

PAMAR 12-30-2014 07:26 AM

Jordan 12-30-2014 07:58 AM

What a great idea!!! Thank you so much for sharing a wonderful idea.

Sewnoma 12-30-2014 07:58 AM

Oh what a good idea! I even have some of these in my kitchen that are barely used...I kind of hate them as cutting boards, LOL.

pocoellie 12-30-2014 11:24 AM

annt59-I didn't get them at a dollar store, I got them at our local Ace hardware store.

judy363905 12-30-2014 03:38 PM

Just home from Dollar Tree...picked up a pack of 2 - 11" x 14" plastic. Thank you again for posting this information. :)

I will need to check our Dollar Tree. I do have X-ray films too but I forgot I could use them for templates.

charsuewilson 12-30-2014 05:23 PM

I've used plastic milk cartons when the size of the template needed was smaller than the side of the carton.

memepat 12-30-2014 05:28 PM

The folks on here are soooo smart and ingenious about using these they have or things the dollar stores have. In the past when you cut templates for everything I used X-rays that were over exposed. Thanks for sharing.

tellabella 12-30-2014 06:00 PM

I also use these ...plastic cuts easily...they are great and cheaper than the "real" plastic...

lclang 12-31-2014 04:02 AM

Our Dollar Tree had them several years ago but does not carry them any more....Darn!

janjj 12-31-2014 06:49 AM

Thanks so much I love the tips you guys come up with !

AZ Jane 12-31-2014 07:16 AM

Well, how smart are you!! LOL, never even entered my mind, off to the store!! After I smack myself in the head, that is!!

ladydukes 12-31-2014 07:54 AM

If you want them from the dollar store, try Dollar Tree where everything is a dollar or less.

DJ 12-31-2014 08:07 AM

Very timely hint for me as I am running out of the X-ray film and was wondering what to use instead. Thanks!

ItsJustMe 12-31-2014 08:40 AM

Wow! Never thought of that! Thanks sew much for sharing!

MargeD 12-31-2014 08:56 AM

Great idea. I have also used them to put into tote bags, purses, etc. - I cover with W&N batting with matching fabric from the lining; if I've used them up I use plastic canvas, it works and gives the bag stability.

Yooper32 12-31-2014 01:56 PM

Can't wait to get to Dollar Tree now.

palmetto girl 12-31-2014 05:56 PM

Thanks for the reminder. What would we do without the $Tree?

mojo11 01-01-2015 09:52 AM

Great tip. Thank you.

JuneBillie 01-01-2015 12:16 PM

That is a great tip. I am now where anytime I am in a dollar store etc. I start thinking what might be here that could be used in sewing/quilting etc. besides what it shows it is for. lol... It's fun too. I love the creativity that we find, and develop on this wonderful board.

Hey great idea....thanks for sharing.

sylvia776 01-01-2015 04:49 PM

Hi all and Happy New Year!!!

I haven't tried this, but I was told that if you dip old xrays into bleach, it removes all images and the bleached xrays can then be used for making quilting templates. If this works, it's a great way to recycle!

Ooops, my xray suggestion has already been posted. I should have read all the posts first!
